D800

I think with the D4 we can be safe (that will be sure?) of it! ;-)
With the recent 5d3 1080p footage(ok ok, I will still wait for the I-frame codec sample), I am beginning to think the D800 is my favorite of the latest batch of new cameras. Just jonesing for some timecode though. Does the Hyperdeck Shuttle record timecode when tapping the HDMI output?

I actually like the D4 a bit better, but at near half the cost of an F3, I will have to see a bit more footage, or try it out.

I disagree, James. Only the comments are underwhelming! ;-)
Ok, I was too quick to write that, but didn't mean it as a final judgement. Just talking off the cuff (I intentionally used the word 'beginning'). I wanted to consider the other options, and investigate the use of Nikon with an HDMI recorder. And I definitely was not saying the D800 was better! Just saying my developing/questioning preference at that moment. Perhaps I have been posting too much, and am beginning to write what I am thinking, instead of what I have thought about.

For example, I did not factor in that the 5d3 video was shot at iso3600 (3200???). The noise and detail levels are quite good, and far better than a 60D in those conditions.

Anyway, I was about to erase my comments, but you made note, so I will leave it as a reference. Again, they were intended to be more exploratory than definitive.

More nanotechnology, please.

The problem is not your comments. Maybe who comes from outside with or without a badge but very likely with no clue about other stuff already shown (discussed, whatever...homework!) and start to post making others to say the same in order to not make the fool part out of the picture. Typical case of internet misinformation. It is not exactly your case once you are one of the few to form your own opinion also based on others' opinion, yes. Why not? I don't escape either ;-) We should always try to find the consensus, except when we're going in the wrong direction : )

The quicker to see takes always the best part of the girl. Sorry, cake, I meant : D

I see. Perhaps, if we truly valued our own thoughts, we wouldn't be so hurried to use our words before our ideas are more complete???

What I should've wrote... Hmmmm, does the Hyperdeck Shuttle record timecode when recording from HDMI?

Because uncompressed 8bit 422 maybe more important to me than lowlight w/ I-frames. But the verdict on these cameras is still not yet out, so everything is subject to be conjecture.

It is important to trade ideas. For example, I and many others we've seen things we don't like it. The infamous moiré on the bridge, despite the tough pattern to deal with using a wide angle, but isn't that the idea?

But take a glance on the minute 1:11-1:13 here (the Ragstock store's):

And here (3:44-3:46 on the doctor's plate):

Aliasing... from where? Original footage? Deficient downsampling? Re-encoding, compression?

Yes, the moire on the bridge was a disappointment. That kicked me in the shins the first time I saw it (there was a 1080p version available for a short time, and it had the moire, as well). The doctors plate, I hadn't seen. Though, the Nikon has a sync scan for recording television screens and monitors without flicker - haven't seen that listed on the 5d3 yet.

Again, I may cancel my preorder, and not buy any of these intermediate class bodies. I do not have to like either camera, and I am not particularly excited about either of them (5d3 and D800). But, I have been wanting to go full frame, because it reflects the way I compose in my mind better (compression to field of view ratio). I could care less about shallow DoF. The m43 and aps-c have sufficient dof control.

The 5d3 is looking to be the better all-in-one, and I do love being able to create picture styles for Canon (which ps will be even better on the I-frame codec), but if the D800 proves to be comparable in IQ (i.e. better than 5d2), with the added benefit of clean HDMI out, I may just swing that way. I can live with the occasional moire, and perhaps I can adapt the 5d2 AA filter to help the D800 along.

I think my D7000 will match the D800 better than my 60D will match the 5d3. Which is another small factor.

But again, neither camera excites me, and I am not dedicated to buy one, until I see better sample footage, or get the thumbs up from you. ;)

At this point, there are enough variables for me to continue exploring both Canon and Nikon, as well as GH2 and Sony.

Thank you for your perspective, and thoughtful input, Emanuel.

Here is a sample of moire from the making of 'Joy Ride' on youtube.

Screen Shot 2012-03-07 at 6.24.47 AM.jpg
1080p screen shot 100% crop (slightly altered by the DVXuser upload, but essentially similar result.Click on image for better view)

Note: This is not the actual D800 footage, but highly compressed 1080p youtube footage.

And for perspective, here is some moire coming from the 5Dmk3:

Yes, this intermediate encodings left a trace of total confusion. What is what?

As for instance, when the motorbike leaves the hospital or not the last but the previous shot of the short movie's end. Where's the aliasing? I don't see it at all. However, if shot with the 5DII would surely be there!

I really like the look of this video http://vimeo.com/38009435 .It has a real nice look, but I think the moire may still be a problem. I especially see it in the stockings at 1:50 .It's in black and white but the patterns are there.

Looked pretty awesome to me! The gradient on skin tones at 2:44: exposed to shadow rolloff seemed awesome to me and they were not even using an external recorder. Making my 7d look pretty dated.

looks mighty good to me , except 2:31 which has a little something there flickering in her hair in 720p,60fps, but except that looks fantastic , i wonder if he used an external recorder or in cam compression
