D7100 available for preorder

Just got the camera a few hours ago in a Berlin, I tried it in the shop and it shows little or no moire and, as far as I can judge, has great dynamic range and it is very sharp. I am travelling back to Italy (where it is not out, yet) and will post something as soon as I arrive.

Unless they've somehow boosted the sensor read rolling shutter is still a big problem with the Toshiba sensor. I hope it is a bit sharper without the OLPF, the D5200 is sharper than the 5D but not as sharp as the Nex-5n or GH2. I've seen some stills tests and the D7100 looks sharper than the D5200 but the tests don't say what lens was used and the corners look a lot softer on the D5200 shots so I suspect it isn't the same lens making the test a complete waste of time.

Hope these might be interesting to judge DR and moire, tomorrow I'll try to post something more structured. ISO 400 (outdoor clip of the hat) and ISO 800 (indoor, inside the shop). Lens 17-55 nikon.
Would you be willing to do a test for me that I could download the original source footage of?

Starting rolling with the lens cap on, after a few seconds taking the lens cap off, panning the camera around a bit, then pointing it at a very bright source like a light bulb for a few seconds then putting the lens cap back on and after a few seconds stopping recording. About twenty or so seconds in total.

As for camera settings:
Progressive
23.976 or 25 fps
1/48th or 1/50th shutter
Fixed aperture at 5.6 or 8
Fixed ISO at 400
Standard profile
No noise reduction

This would really be invaluable to me.

Looking at the rolling shutter will give us a clue about whether it's the Toshiba sensor, as would a lens cap ISO noise test.

Thank you for uploading the clips. Are these direct from camera ? what was your movie quality setting at? They look good, but seem to be set to normal as the bite rate averages about 5 Mbps. I have the D5200 and am thinking of returning it for a D7100. Sure would be interested to see how they look with the video setting set to set to high and whether the 7100 has any FPN in the grays and blacks like the d5200 shows.

I compressed the data rate because with the very slow connection at the airport it would have taken ages to upload the files. The last clip I linked is a direct camera file. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to post some better footage. I did try out the D5200, very nice image, as far as I can judge by eye the D7100 has a wider DR and better resolution.

I'm really waiting in anticipation of the D7100. I think it's gonna be THE NIKON to get. I think it's the culmination of all the ideas they've been working on. It's got things the D600 doesn't have. If the IQ is what I think it's gonna be, then I think we're in for a real treat.

If IQ is about the same as with the D5200 (which we still don't know, could be better, might be worse), what are the reasons for so many people to prefer the D7100? Is it the features for stills, or the better body?

I don't shoot many stills, and I'm not 100% sure about the body advangage: yes, it's bigger (more confortable to hold) and has better construction (weather sealing?), but it doesn't have the flip screen, and the biggest difference in the Canons (the extra wheel for controlling aperture) is not that important with the Nikons, given the liveview limitation, which will probably mean lots of people use manual lenses with these cameras.

I pixel peeped at some stills on some photography site, the high ISO noise on the D5200 and D7100 look identical so I suspect they have the same sensor.

The LCD on the D5200 isn't z-finder compatible but an EVF is a necessary accessory for serious work. If the D7100 video has more resolution then that alone would be enough for me. The D5200 has more resolution than the 5D but it's still lagging behind the Nex-5n and GH3. The one click white balance in live view, kelvin adjustment, weather sealing, and higher capacity batteries are all welcome additions.

So the differences of nikon d5200 and d7100

Nikon d5200: Flip screen
Nikon d7100: Better body

And the 2 cameras have the limitation with the aperture again? (like d7000 and d600)

Hi Squig
Do you have both cameras? I have a d5200 that I want to use mainly for broadcast video work and I'm not please with its video codec and lack of sharpness/detail. I'm thinking of upgrading it to the d7100 and or adding an external recorder like a BM Hyperdeck shuttle. Does the d7100 offer better video performance then the d5200 and does it carry the same FPN problems of the d5200. Setting proper white balance is a pain to use. Battery life is very short on the d5200. I also use an external EVF for focus and exposure, without it you can be lost.
