D7100 available for preorder

A lens test to have an idea of the sensor sharpness. The camera has little moire but wobble on handheld shots is pretty bad

This was a useful video. It's hard to really judge the sharpness level or rather the level of detail unless there's a direct comparison with other cameras shooting the same scene. I'm still thinking this camera could be a great tool as part of a group of DSLR's. Having the D7100 for wide dynamic range shots could be very useful. I could see pairing it with a GH3 so that I could have different things covered. Namely high detail and 1080/60p from the GH3. Down the line maybe a 5D3 for low light and FF look. I'd love to see a direct comparison between the GH3 and D7100 to compare the difference in detail.

The GH3 has cadence issues so it's a no go for me. I'm considering shooting my feature with a D7100/D5200 combo and Iscoramas but I'm waiting to see if there's any surprises at NAB before I make a decision. I'm really liking the images from the D5200, the colour, resolution, and dynamic range blows the 5D away. The D5200/7100 has the most cinematic images I've seen from a DSLR, more 16mm than 35mm but that's fine for me. The rolling shutter is the only thing that bugs me but with the right amount of stabilization and lensing it hasn't been a huge problem.

I can try to do a comparison between the D7100 and a hacked GH1.

Please have a look at a simple comparison between D7100 anf GH1 hacked, both set at 400 ISO, lens Nikon 85mm f1.4 ais at f 2.8. D7100 on 1080p 25fps, neutral all parameter to 0. Daylight

@ BobbyMurcerFan - I haven't forgotten about the test, just didn't have time but will try and send it by tomorrow.
Thanks Andrea189. I just so happen to be a GH1 owner :) Both images looks nice. GH1 seems to have a bit more detail, but the 7100 has that shallower DOF and isn't quite as detailed but not bad. Given the much superior DR and color of the D7100 i'd say it's a very worthy camera. I do wonder tho if it might not be outclassed by the even more detailed GH2 or GH3.

IMO what I think about things is that there is a certain minimum level of detail that I think is a threshold for good looking IQ. It appears to me that the D7100 may be safely at that threshold. I'd need to see more comparison tests to be sure. So far it looks pretty good.

Yes, the GH1 has more detail. But it also has a much more contrasty image with awful yellow clipping!

We don't know what the Picture profile was for the GH1, so I wouldn't judge it too harshly on that aspect. Tho it's more than obvious that the Nikon has the clear edge in DR and Color. Not to mention that you have really limited ability to tailor the GH1 in terms of Contrast and Saturation. GH1 is OLD tech now. I'd be more curious to see the D7100 compared to the GH3.

(true; I was just guessing he would use on the GH1 whatever settings he feels give the best image)

The GH1 is yersteday's camera. Is a waste of time to compare. Also I wonder how effective the older lenses might be on a new digital camera like the D7100. The VR lenses are especially made for the new cameras and there is a reason for that. Look at the new 80-400 lens from Nikon by example with all those cute little buttons on the side. Maybe the usefulness of older glass is running out with the high megapixels on the new cams.

That's what I'm thinking. The D5200 is just about at the right level of resolution for my filmmaking needs so if the D7100 squeezes out a few more lines without the OLPF then it could be just right. The 5D MKIII is a little too far under the threshold and all the sharper cameras have issues with aliasing and moire except maybe the 1DC. The F100 is sharp but the only cinematic images I've seen have been from people like Frank who busted his arse to make it look good.

I went out with the D5200, underexposed by 4 stops, and ended up with a cinematic looking scene and I didn't have to wrestle with the picture profiles for months. The D7100 has more dynamic range than all the 8bit cameras except the c-log cameras.

A cinematic looking digital image comes from a combination of resolution, colours, dynamic range, anti-aliasing, noise structure, cadence. The D5200 does really well in all these areas and so far from what I've seen so does the D7100, so much so I walked into a store to buy one today but they didn't have any in stock. :nads:

I'm on the fence between the two also. Assuming the image quality is the same, I'm trying to figure out if there is any feature in the 7100 that makes it easier to use. I keep on going back to no flip screen, and I NEED to be able to use the camera w/o a monitor attached. But the fixed screen on the 7100 and its viewfinder are supposedly better quality, so maybe that offsets no flip. And there is the ability to use older Nikon lenses. ...I'm just having a really difficult time deciding. :(
