D5200 Anyone got it ???

squig, interesting results, I would put GH3 lower than D5200 in terms of noise, it produces more noise, no doubt about that.
Did test recently, with C100 among the group. Got all three cameras at the time, can do another test, if you like. Shot a project recently with C100 and D5200 along. They match pretty well in well lit conditions, curious if you see the difference, there is some, C100 better a bit with resolution and about a stop in DR.

I can't look at youtube for a few days, I used up all my bandwidth.

Noise doesn't bother me as long as it looks like grain. I generally add grain to my films and the GH3 noise looks alright to me. The problem with fixed pattern noise is it pops up just where you don't want it to, like on an actors face in a moody backlit shot, and you don't want to shoot them with a soft DSLR and denoise their face and make them look like a thunderbird puppet.

The C100 beats these 3 cameras in almost every scenario, it has great resolution, great dynamic range, great rolling shutter, and great ISO performance, however I've heard that it does have some FPN. Unfortunately it also comes with a great pricetag and doesn't do 60p.

Can you do an ISO noise test on the C100? All you have to do is with the body cap on shoot each ISO for say 5 seconds and record the ISO number with your voice. With the camera set to 24p with a 1/50 shutter @ 5600k I'd do one test with c-log and another with the wide dynamic range profile. I'd really like to see how the fixed pattern noise looks on the C100.

...what's amazing about that rating is that the d5200 cost half of what the gh3 cost....and a 1/5 of what the mkIII cost ! And concerning the fpn, what about what eoshd said about just using the d5200 with profiles burned in, rather than the flat profiles. Does that or doesn't that negate the banding ? And since I shoot mostly b&w, noise doesn't bother me as much as banding . Thanks for the comparison /k

The FPN is always there, shooting burned in doesn't make as much difference as exposing correctly. If you shoot flat you can generally mask the fpn by crushing the blacks in post. I don't shoot burned in but I don't shoot super flat either, it really depends on the shot, if it's a high contrast scene you're gonna want to shoot flat. 100, 160, 400, and 800 ISO are the least noisy.

the Clog and WDR factory set not good to my taste, I changed them a bit. (just like settings no AF100 some time ago, people never had time to discover correct settings, claiming it makes too much noise. There was a way around that.

Colour wise I could probably live with any of the 3. IQ wise the GH3 meets my resolution requirements but not my dynamic range requirements and it's the opposite with the other 2..... grrr!

I figured that I get the best results with the D7100 when using daylight balanced lights at ISO 100 to 400, anything higher can originate noise in the shadows. I also noticed that doing some post sharpening works better than setting in camera sharpness to 1 or 2. Are you getting the same results with the D5200? Do you think that recording 4:2:2 to an external recorder would improve resolution and colour rendition?

^ interesting rankings
The GH3 is looking very well, wins 3 out of 4... but it's last on DR! A real pity, given that the sensor itself could get up to 12.4 stops of DR, and it's the picture settings (ANY picture settings) that are killing nearly 3 stops from that.

Well, the GH2 hacks were mostly about improving the encoder. With the GH3, the encoder is up to snuff already, so perhaps any future hacks for the GH3 will be centered around improving the picture profiles...if it's possible?

It would be great, but I'd say it's highly unlikely: none of the DSLR hacks so far has been able to control this kind of thing, AFAIK.

So haven't had anlot of free time to play with my d5200, but I should soon now that I finished my emt classes. What picture profiles do you all seem to think works best, shoot with flaat, or the gamma curve profiles, or maybe just trying to get the best in camera using neutral? Also it seems to be best to use 1 or 2 sharpness and sharpen in post.

+2 sharpness is a bit much. 0 or +1 with post sharpening is the way to go. Standard and neutral look practically identical except neutral has less contrast, standard with the contrast dialled down looks the same. Neutral dialled down is a lot flatter than prolost on the Canons, more like log or cinestyle which could be problematic with the fixed pattern noise. Skin tones are quite pale on the Nikon so I'd experiment with flaat.

Been doing a lot of stills lately with the D5200 and got to say I like it. Sucks not really having autofocus like I would with the D7100 but I've gotten down manual focus really good now because of that haha. Also picked up the Sony Nex 5n for a steal, might have to compare the two. Excited about the Nex as it allows me to use it as a B cam, have a small form factor, and 60 fps at 1080!

  • Very interesting thread. I read the hole thread. I bought my D5200 three weeks ago. I've already shot some sequences for my next short films. Here are some samples. Just a very quick color correction, no work on the sound.
