D5200 Anyone got it ???

I'm with you John, ;). Buying for anything but the here and now is crazy, IMHO. I see cameras as having a two year life nowadays. So I'd rather buy a 5200 and have the extra money for upgrading in say 18 months or so.

I bought a GH3 yesterday, now I have 6 cameras!

I'm selling the 5D MKIII for a D800 or as I like to call it the DarkNinja Production Camera. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I'd go for a GH3, but I just don't want to deal with the m4/3rd sensor size. I'd love full frame, but don't want to spend that much on a DSLR. The 600 is tempting b/c of good low light performance, but it's a little too soft, IMHO.

So I've determined to go with the D5200. I'll pull the trigger once I finish working on a huge project that has been almost killing me, LOL :(.

One thing I haven't mentioned before about the D5200, the punch in on the LCD is very soft, not tack sharp like it is on the 5D.

There's an MFT speedbooster due out this month which made the GH3 much more attractive to me. I'll be testing it up against the D5200 next week, Samuel and I are teaming up again to test the dynamic range and the rolling shutter. I can't believe the GH3 has been out for ages and nobody has done these tests!

After seeing a $100.00 instant discount on the D5200 body at the B&H website and the Black Magic camera announcement the next day I finally saw the light and pulled the plug on the D5200 instead of the D7100. The money saved goes into a piggy bank for the pocket BMC. These are some random scenes right after walking out of BH. Some takes have minor tweaks with the Sony Vegas Levels filter.

Fixed your link :)

standard profile? Looks too hard and contrasty for me

a quick test I did, comparing GH3 with Nikon D5200, the short source files. It seems that at ISO 1600 GH3 produces more noise, but it's sharper , also GH3 produces that pink, Canon look :), which I have a hard time with, let me know what you think. Also GH3 has a bit more moire. PS (I messed a bit with the balnce, but still the pink look is annoying on GH3)
GH3 may have a bit more of a latitude.

Liked the D5200 footage better, just smoother, more organic and more glued together as a whole.

That "mesh" looks a bit harsh and alias'y on the Gh3

The D5200 looks good with great glass. I'm gonna be using Iscoramas on the GH3 which will smooth out the aliasing and look more organic. The Iscoramas are a bit too soft on the D5200 but the Leicas look great.

I read the entire thread from 1 to 65. I really like this camera but I have a few questions. It might have been answered and I didnt see it. But please answer it.

1. How is the codec? Its AVCHD/H264 24mbs. Is it somewhat like the FS100 or the Af100 or the stock GH2 or is it entirely different? If it is different is it better in terms of post production (color grading) compared at least to Af100 or Gh2?
2. I like lenses which adapt to various mounts and the best for me are Nikon AI lens. How is their compatibality with the D5200?
3. Ive heard some banding issues from this camera. Rumor or is there some truth to it?

If people like Macgregor and Samuel like it, I dont have anything to say to it. But its just that I have certain queries that I would want to know before I go in shooting anything. I am mostly a narrative filmmaker and want to have a good kit. This camera is the one I am looking at. If not this then probably a GH3 or the 7D.

Thank you all.

Ok! I just borrowed a D5100 from a friend and setting the exposure itself is so irritating that I actually would want to give up on the D5200 and go for the GH3 or the 7D. Any tips on how you guys are setting the exposure on your nikon dslrs. I have the kit lens. Would it change if I had manual focus lens with an iris ring on the barrel?

It would make life much easier because you can adjust exposure even when you are in live view. Since you mentioned that you are a narrative film maker, I would look into buying good quality AIS manual lenses. Just bear in mind that you need a rig to stabilize the camera, which you probably need anyway for narrative work. If I were you, I'd also consider the Nikon D7100.

Btw, not sure if this was mention but the reason why there is so much skew in the camera lcd is due to the lcd itself having a slow rolling shutter display exploration. I've checked the hdmi with a zacuto evf and it was fine.
I do also hate how slow setting expoaure in this camera is, but in video mode with manual lenses that is mot usually an issue. However for taking photos it sucks. But in the end it is corgiven given the price of this toy.

@Andrea: Yea, a friend came over and he had d5100 with him. And so I just ran some tests to see workflow and general stuff because i have never worked with a nikon before. He just had the kit lens. For video i dont like zooms unless im in some peculiar situation. I want to buy nikon ai primes. I still dont know about exposure setting. Its nikon's only con. They made a camera which can easily take on 5d mk3 and d800, both which are at least thrice the price but has this caveat.

If you go for a D5100 or D5200, get Nikon AF-D primes. The older AI-S lenses will not work with the camera's light meter and you'll have an even harder time setting exposure. The newer AF-S G lenses lack manual aperture rings and aren't as well-suited for manual focusing.

I don't see a hack coming any time soon so ai primes (AF-D for stills) and a zacuto EVF is the best way to get the most out of the D5200.

I think you should really have a look at the D7100, it will work with manual primes and it's only about € 300 more expensive, at least here in Italy.
