D5200 Anyone got it ???

Download the Mp4 from the file menu (the viewer is heavily compressed), it looks almost identical to the 5Gb ProRes file.
Odd, MediaInfo says the download is a 15Mbps 720p video at 24.00 fps? Can you upload an original clip for comparison as well?

The original is 5Gb!

Even playing the 720p @ 1080p I didn't notice a difference which I think is testament to how good the original image from thiss camera is.

I'll put up a shorter prores clip.

Ok here's my first effort shot with the D5200.

I deliberately blew the highlights in the grade for effect, if you don't like it I don't care. I shot it on the shoulder with a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 ai, @ 100 ISO, neutral, 3 sharpness (a bit too sharp), everything else set to 0. Transcoded to ProRes 442HQ, graded in magic bullet looks, no post sharpening.

Pans look smooth for 24p, unlike what I get with the GH2

I'm putting up a short 45 second cut ungraded ProRes 422HQ so you can do your worst. Some of the shots are a little hot, still got my D5200 training wheels on :cheesy:

Cadence looks good, too bad the rolling shutter kills it but that was all shot @ 150mm (35mm equivalent). Shooting wide shouldn't be a problem but it wouldn't be my first choice for shooting action sports.

hehe, fun video :)

the image is sharp and clean of the usual DSLR artifacts, but we already knew that

colors are quite nice, including skin tones; I like this kind of halfway-desaturated look (i just finished uploading this just-for-fun clip); was it like that out of the camera, or did you grade it to look so? which picture style did you use?

I think I saw some codec issues, but I'd have to spend a bit more time pixel peeping to be sure it was that; better to let squig tell us what he thought while editing and grading

rolling shutter doesn't look too bad, there's a lot of camera movement and the clip survives just fine
I think there are a couple of shots I can use to measure sensor readout time, too late now but I'll try to do this tomorrow

DR was not a problem in this clip, but overcast is not very demanding anyway; the sky was ugly and color-less, but I guess that's what it had to be

overall: looking good!

and yes, that skirt was making me nervous too

It was her first day freewheeling without the training wheels, I was very proud. To be honest I didn't even notice the skirt at the time, I was too busy trying to pull focus, nail exposure, and frame my shots.

I shot it with the neutral profile with everything set to 0 except sharpness which was set to 3, which I think is a little too sharp with that lens. The image looks about as flat as prolost. I'm uploading a short ungraded prores file now. The codec gets a bit muddy with fast movement.

Overall I think the resolution, dynamic range, cadence, and colour is very good. I'm not a big fan of the codec but I don't like any DSLR codecs and I'm going to be recording everything to prores on a Ninja soon. The rolling shutter is a bit of a step backwards unfortunately but I really did push it hard in that test. The fixed pattern noise can be cleaned up with a bit of black crushing and/or neat video.

I'm actually not a big fan of the flip out screen, the surface is not flat so the z-finder frame doesn't sit flush and I had to tape around the frame to block out the light. Also when you flip out the screen with a z-finder attached it feels really flimsy and I wouldn't trust it not to fall apart.

I'm hoping for just a little bit more from the D7100.

@squig. Loved the footage! I don't see a rolling shutter problem at all. Great colors. The camera is looking good. Thanks for shooting and sharing! Now I am eagerly waiting for the D7100 also!

It's pretty nice for $700 and I think it blows every DSLR away up to the D800 and 5D MKIII and even gives them a run for their money. I could comfortably make films with it, it looks very cinematic.

BTW most of that clip was shot @ f/22, not exactly the sweet spot of the lens.

Here's an ungraded ProRes clip for those who like to tinker- https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzJ3L6nv6Fn0cFVqeGRLNTYxcTQ/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks. Me too.

I'd really like to see how this thing looks alongside a C100 or 1DC. A D4c is my dream camera.

Very nice ;) I've been viewing quite a bit of 16mm shorts on Vimeo. This looks a lot like that to me..very pleasing color and just rich in "feel" (Pixel peeping aside of course...I don't really do that)

Hey Samuel I just want you to know I am extremely happy to hear some parov Stelar used in that video haha. Huge fan of electronic swing so was happy to hear this.

Anyways I just got a Kiron 24mm F2 Lens to try out to go with the D5200, was a nice cheap alternative to the samyang 24mm so we will see how it will do. Been busy with school and its been killing me as I want to shoot with this camera so bad.

The Kiron is very soft and low contrast @ f/2, stopped down a bit it's not bad.

Yeah thats what It seems like, a little soft at f2 but still useable and was over $500 cheaper. For the price and being on a budget I wont complain, plus it allows me to either get a tokina 11-16mm or a DP4 EVF to go with the D5200.

Yeah 16mm, that's what I was thinking, I usually add a layer of real grain to my films but I left this one naked for the peepers. I think with Leica glass, lower in camera sharpening, with a touch of post sharpening, recorded straight to prores, it's gonna look more like 35mm.

Next up I have to to do a side by side test with the 5D MKIII, I gots to know!

I bought the Kiron and compared it to my Nikkor ai 24mm, the Nikkor was a lot nicer. Most wides aren't very good at f/2. All of the wides in this were shot with the Nikkor ai f/2.8 on the 5D MKII. https://vimeo.com/11409809 I'm gonna have to get the Tokina too to go wide enough with the APS-C body.

Yeah I had the Tokina on 11-16mm for my canon (I actually still have it but need to sell it) and im not sure if I want to spend the money to re buy it just yet. It's an amazing lens but I didn't use it often, of course when I did use it I loved it. Its a great ultra wide angel lens if you don't over use it.
