D400 just a rumor

Nikonrumors just posted something about the D400 and D750. Neat photos if they're a Photoshop job but otherwise a very neat idea/find.

Full HD means only the resolution - has nothing to do with the fps. The concept FHD/HD (1920x1080 vs 1280x720) is closely related to video resolutions and TV (HDTV). Pretty much the same HDV1 + HDV2.
Sure, there are higher resolutions in cinematography like 3K, 4k, 5K (e.g. 3078x1728, 4096x2304...) - used in cameras like Red, Arri... etc.

B&H has $100 rebates on the D300 now. Maybe they need to clear them out too. The D90 is still out of stock. Just a few kits.

I guessing the low D90 stock is to help push the D5000 sales. And everyone seems to agree that the D5000 is pointless if one can spend a few extra bucks and get the D90.

I questioned before that maybe the D90 would be phased out. I was told thats impossible as its a new product and the usual product cycle is at least two years. But the video thing on DSLR is a major change in DLSR's so maybe now the D5000 is covering the low end, the D90 might be phased and the D400 covers the pro consumer middle range hopefully by this summer. Just a posibility but not impossible. It just seems strange having two cameras that are essentialy the same with a couple of minor differences.

maybe they will do a D90s. Still the same model just improved.

The perspective to keep in mind is that most people who are buying the D90 are buying it for still photo purposes as their top priority. The contingent of people who are begging for increased video capabilities has to be very small when looking at their customer base. It seems like a no-brainer to the DVXuser D90 section, but you gotta see the bigger picture.

I'm sure it will come in time, but to believe that they will be urgent and meet a small demand right now seems more like fantasy than reality.

I have a feeling that when there is a full frame video feature or better compression, etc, there will still be something (that is perceived as crucial) left out, like manual controls. There is always something....

If we do see a new DX camera with increased video capabilities via new sensor it would be released on the D400 first. That way they would be able to achieve better profit margins with a higher-end model, then after a year they will drop that sensor into an updated D90 range camera, and a year or so after that update their D5000. This is how Nikon has always done it, and it also makes the most buisness sense.

Personally, I wouldn't think Nikon would announce something until Photokina, but in the last year both companies seem to be entirely ignoring the trade-shows so it may happen sooner.

The D750 rumor sounds like BS to me. Nikon's nomencalture haven't used a x50 increment since the F60 days to designate an updated camera (Sony's alpha-dSLR's do). Usually Nikon adds and 'x', so a D700x would sound to be more realistic then a D750. However, things like swivel screen, 1080p video, and slightly higher megapixels sound to me like a logical step.

The cameras set for an update this year are the D300 and D3. Their other cameras like the D700 and D90 have been out for less then a year and are not set for an update.

This thought has run through my mind as well. If so, that just brings up the price of D90's to collectors and I have two.

How Nikon will call it doesn´t make any difference to me. Fact is they don´t have a direct competitor to the 5DII until now. That means a full format dslr with 1080p video mode. So I suppose they can´t wait another year to bring out something equal. Autumn is just a rough guess by me.

True DLSR are mainly for pictures BUT that was yesterday, what if DLSR video becomes mainstream, people start to tire of the functions of a point and shoot and want a simple (possible small form eg GH1) DSLR that they can use instead of their video camera. Think of the huge market of HD video cameras, every company wants a piece of that from Sony to Panasonic. Then imagine, Nikon can swipe a huge chunk of it, an area they never even put much effort to. basically were seeing convergence of two products potentially and different companies will try to come to market with a product that people will in the main stream will buy.

This is one argument why DSLRs will propbably all have a video function in the next two years apart form a few top end cameras for the professional purist. And I haven't even mentioned the rivalry bewteen Canon who is also sticking Video on its latest DSLR one low end one middle to high end. Seriously my bet is the whole industry in video aquisition is mid revolution in a few years the average punter will have in their hands the technology movie makers are getting excited about now.

I was pointing out that the rumor is BS. Not only is the naming scheme wrong, but the D700 has not been out for even a year. This is an obviously bogus rumor. Nikon is in no hurry to replace that camera.

These aren't video cameras, these are first and foremost cameras designed to take photographs. In this regard, the D700 is plenty competitive to a 5D markII. Not only does the D700 shoot at 8fps vs the 3.9 fps of the 5DII, more importantly it has 51-point AF compared to the 9-point AF that the 5DII has. Worst, the 5DII doesn't even have its spot-meter linked to outer focus points (an incredibly important and basic feature). These are specs that really matter to the core consumer of this camera, not 1080p video.
