D400 just a rumor

I am a professional photographer and videographer who owns a D90 since the first week it came out. My conclusion, well known around here, is photo quality is excellent, movie mode sucks. Video quality on the D90 is non-existent. 90% of the videos I've seen shot with it look bad at some point or another if not altogether. Nikon has to step up their video side of their next camera. I want to be able to use my next VDSLR to take pics and video for the papers (and their websites) I do work for. A single camera, two income streams. The camera has to be reliable on both sides, especially for those of us who will benefit professionally from it.

You never cease to amaze me. Of all your posts that you have made in this thread, I wonder how many are just like this one.

People know your point of view on the subject.

The fact is, many amazing projects have been done with the D90. If you have something better on any format than anything that has been posted here, please share.

We all agree the D90 could have more video 'emph' to it. But I'd take my D90 over DV any day for any creative project.

The D90 is just a tool, it does not make the artist. Of course it might not be ideal for wedding, live journalism, etc. But for creative narratives and video expressions, it's more than one needs, IMO.

I hope all of them. I try to be consistent. D90 for narrative, nah. Maybe for video expressions of visual experimentation. The overall quality is just not there for much else, sooner or later you have to realize that. You want good video quality get a Canon HF S100.

I've said from day one that the novelty of the D90 will wear out quickly and folks will be demanding more. I never got one because I couln't get past the fact that my HV20 looks so much better (in terms of codec quality). But it is what it is....and lots of folks made the best of it.

Why bother with Canon if my Nikon D90 with a 50mm1.2 just made me 4.000 last week.
Honestly dude, get over it. Quality is one thing, the look is another. Nowadays you get paid more for the look than the quality. At least I am.

And yes, I am a film school graduate, used to own the XLs , the DVXs and bla bla bla.
But never had I so much fun shooting stuff as I have now with that crappy DSLR.
Same goes for my clients when they get to see the results.
Sure, playing it on TV may be tricky but who cares. Web is where the money and the public are right now. Finally!!!

thank you.

What an arrogant idiot you are! Why are you even posting so enthusiastically in the D90 forum? And I hope you're not the John Caballero who has an account on Vimeo, because if you were in fact him, then you clearly have no sense of what good cinematography means.

calm down boys.

I've said it before and I will say it again. I've seen some great stuff with the D90. I don't need one right at the moment so I'm either waiting for the D400 or a price drop on the D90.

Don't start with the personal attacks. I can see you are new around here, so read the rules. You don't have to be a cinematography genius to see what the D90 produces as a video camera. Again, I love the D90, for stills, not video. I will not be going around cheering it as a very capable video camera because it ain't. If you don't like my posts skip them when you see my name. Vimeo for me is just for fun, not to promote any of my professional work, and if you don't like it tough luck.

I would like to see what Steven Spielberg could do with a D90. Probably than I can do with a $100,000 camera.

The point of using the d90 is NOT to use it as a video camera. The best use of it is as a digital cinema camera--much more of a film (albeit standard 16mm) than video.

It has a very filmic look when used properly.

Ok, I apologize John, but I can't stand this repeated whining over technology. I wonder if you had the balls to tell a Nikon developer in his face that the D90 movie mode sucks and the video quality is NON-EXISTENT. I mean, that isn't constructive, it's bashing in the most primitive way, just for the sake of it. Did you watch Daniel Aragão's short film? How bad was the video quality? Was it non-existent, as you call it? Did it SUCK? No, it looked better than any freaking 50.000$ project. Why? Because he makes the best of what he has at his disposal. You clearly don't.

i agree, but what a person has done also has a huge effect on the weight of their opinions. a great film editor once said to a nervous director confused by everybody's input on everything not to trusty the opinion of anyone who hasn't proved themselves. it helped a lot.

Good advice Mattais. But let me ask....which one of them were you?

No problem, Androwski. The fact is that I am all for this video and still hybrid technology from the beginning. I have the D90 from the first week it came out. I want Nikon to succeed in their efforts and I hope/want the D400, or whatever comes from them, to be much, much better. I have an HVX 200 and I can tell you from my experience that it is a great camera for its price. I would recomend it to anybody that asks about it. The D90 for video projects I wouldn't, especially if you are investing your hard earned money and have high expectations from it. I saw Daniel's piece. He is excellent. I respect him as an extremely creative individual the same as Zak. I would like to see how much visually better their pieces would have looked with a much more capable camera. Lets hope we get something better with the GH1 or the D400.

I can't wait for a better camera just so I don't have to listen to any more bitching.....heh like that's ever going to happen

People will always make excuses by blaming the technology, rather than developing a great story and learning to get fantastic performances from their actors.

Neither am I asking for yours. I learned long time ago that if you are running hard towards a wall and you ask me on the way if the wall is hard I should tell you to keep running even harder and find out for yourself when you hit it. I can't stand people praising something that is not really good. But I shouldn't care, let them hit the wall.

Just curious, if you were shooting a feature with fantastic actors and a great story which camera would you rather use, a Panasonic Hmc 150 or an HPX 500?

John, give it a rest. You don't endorse using the D90 for "serious" work, but people have found ways to work around its limitations to create great work. So despite your experience with its limitations people have found it adequate. There's no need to go into every D90 thread and threadcrap on the camera.

Everyone else, please, no personal attacks. PM me or another moderator if you have a problem.
