D300s announced

I'm sure Scarlet will be a great camera when it comes out. But they will sell less than projected because of the economy. Actually everybody is on a budget and a good video DSLR will be good enough for many.

"The processing power seems to be improved"

hehe, what I see on D300s site is still shhh.. We should wait for the first downloadable video, and check it.

whatching helikopter blade during take of, it is awful (5d still a bit better)

Yup. That's right. I read the swedish article. No manual control, so we can put any doubt to rest.

Less jello, though (according to nikon). This stems from the D300s more powerfull (than d90/d5000) processor.

There is a video on http://www.kamerabild.se/nyheter/web...-1.210726.html with a Swedish Nikon dude speaking about video. The most interesting thing he's saying (apart from the above mentioned reduced jello and better compression) is this:

The reason for the 5 min limit is the mJPEG compression. Max filesize in this format is 2GB, aprox 5min of 24p 720

mJPEG was chosen because Nikon allready have good knowledge and hardware for JPEG

That doesn't jive with the 5 minute takes I've experimented with on the D90. They were closer to 500MB. And if this is true, then why does the D90 overheat? This is so bogus!!! Picking technical specs from the musings of Swedish photographers? Doesn't Nikon have a VP of Tech Support and/or R&D who will come into the light of day and answer some technical questions from their customers? This nonsense is really starting to tick me off!

Big update, ground breaking update this week according to NR. Could be firmware maybe?

Not likely. A firmware update the following week for d90 is going to look really silly as they didn't include manual controls on the d300s in the first place.

According to NR, it's a compact camera with built in projector?
Sounds pretty cool idea!

Nikon could easily hark back to their super8mm filmmaking days and make a digital cinema camera (with the gun handle please!!) AND have an built-in projector. omg... i'm jizzing in my pants over that fantasy...

I'd like to see some official numbers from Nikon because with the D90, 5 minutes of 24p 720 isn't anywhere close to 2GB. That would indicate a much higher bitrate for the 300s.

Also, a few posts back someone mentioned that you can't adjust the camera manually while recording, but what about BEFORE recording?

Well the guy who said so is Nikon Sweden's product specialtst... go figure.

I'm afraid nikon rumors is more bent on the stills side of things, so I don't think they/he/she would consider a video-related firmware update as groundbreaking.

Well, that's just sad. Did it lose something in the translation maybe? Or did they really kick the bitrate x4? Does the d300s overheat and shut down like the d90?

Have you read post #29 in this thread? 2GB/5min are about 6 MB/s. That would be great (together with improved downscaling) but the Nikon product specification page says loud and clear 800MB/5min = 2 MB/s = D90!

The camera overheats whether you're recording or not, and they do nothing to stop you from staying in live view as long as you like, or hitting record over and over again for that matter. The camera gracefully shuts down when hot, no need for a time limit for that reason.

"gracefully shuts down"...you are too kind Sir. What is the reason the d90 overheats? The GH1 (as I understand it) doesn't suffer from overheating...does the Canon?

If that's what it is, then who's ground are they breaking? Gimmick happy consumers?

The validity of a shoddy SD projected image outside of drunken teen parties isn't ground breaking, just another gimmick tactic like Casio's useless 1000FPS.

but it does, it even gives you a countdown warning. second best to not overheating is obviously to make sure it doesn't break because of it. this is not a question of overheating per se but what nikon are supposedly doing to prevent it.

while those were the words he used that's not what he meant. he meant "why does it limit the recording to 5 min if not to prevent overheating", and that's what i tried to answer. to answer your question all sensors produce a lot of heat, the reason the d90 *over* heats is probably due to bad design since they never really thought of it until video. the gh1 and 5d may have cooler sensors, probably so with the gh1 since it's only half the surface, or better heatsinks. high end video cameras often have huge heatsinks or even fans.

i hate overheating as much as anyone, or more, but i don't think the 5 minute limit does much to prevent it, even if it was indeed the reason, which i don't think.

I think I understand but can't seem to grasp what seems to be an arbitrary 5 minutes. Why not all the way to 2GB with a "graceful" countdown to any overheating that occurs? Bad design and/or design for stills?
