It appears Nikon don't have a clue about the DSLR filmmaking market, it's as if we didn't exist. such a shame.

Now we wait till October for the D700s but I have to say I'm not feeling confident if Nikon couldn't even be bothered with manual controls and a decent codec.

What film maker uses AF anyway? Im not looking for a camcorder to film a vacation with. Oh and you can edit on the camera.....again...who are they targeting? Professionals or people documenting disney land.

Yeah I agree this doesn't look good for Nikon in terms of filming. No manual controls or better codec. It does have external sound input, but thats minor. I might have to exchange all my Nikon gear and jump on the Canon boat. Nikon just doesn't seem cutting edge. I know Canon next version of their cams are going to evolve, and they seem now committed. A shame

still has 5min record limit and same old tired sensor so I expect it will overheat like the D90 and have as much jello.

looks like I made the right decision buying the MKII

The info is still vague. Manual control and a high bit rate...Please! Manual control should be easier then automatic. I don't understand it.

When I heard it was going to be the D300s and not the D400 I kinda expected we wouldn't be seeing many improvements but they could have at least added manual shutter and ISO.

I've said it before here... Nikon doesn't seem to have much interest nor the heritage in developping professional video features in their DSLRs.... yawn.

Hopefully they were able to better implement the video mode (less rolling shutter, better compression.) But the specifications are very similar to the now pretty old D90. MJpeg compression, 720P 24fps and the same 5 min recording limit. That doesn't sound like much of a change - but it isn't all about the specs. Rather it's how well you implement the specs. So there's still some hope I guess. The proof is in the video.

If Nikon does swing and miss with the D300s in terms of video I'm also not going to be holding out much hope for Nikon ever getting this right in the near term. The D90 was the first version, the 5D really blew this whole thing up. Nikon should've had plenty of time to 1. realize the potential of this new thing. And 2. go back to the drawing board and get it right. But with the same MJpeg codec as the D90, the same 720P 24fps recording mode of the D90, the same 5 min recording limit as the D90 and probably the same data rate as the D90 it's starting to look like the D300s is just a newer D90 in terms of video. Not a good sign for the future of Nikon and video.

"Nikon has also added a virtual horizontal display to help photographers ensure they shoot stable videos". LMAO! if that doesn't sum up how clueless Nikon are. :-Dum(DBG)::nads:

*sigh* if no manual control for video on the new 300, what hope is there that a d90 firmware update with manual controls will be in the offing?

Still, the announcement is a bit vague...maybe they just didn't think to mention it!

it does show the ISO and shutter speed on the LCD, but no mention of manual control.

The versatile Picture Control adjustment options let you modify the tone and color of your movies with remarkable ease. And Tripod mode gives you control over the depth of field with a selectable aperture of up to f/16.*

* With exposure modes A and M.

I'm assuming the "M" mode is manual.
