CS4 just WON AVCHD editing!!

Also, Barry has a Quadro card (built for this industry), not a gaming series like the GeForce in most laptops.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce, how does it function differently than the Quadro?

That's a great question that I've been looking for an answer to for some time. The best I can tell is that the Quadro series is built for industry calculations like video editing and mining excavation renders, while gaming cards are built for gaming.

The former is far, far more expensive and the only reason I can tell is because they are just "better" for those industries. I've yet to see any benchmarks illustrating this or a technical explanation, so there you go.

You may be interested in this guy who claims his computer now detects his GeForce 9600 as a Quadro, and as a result he sees better performance in After Effects.

Thanks Allen, and funny you should specifically mention the GeForce 9600, I priced one out at Best Buy on Friday! My current NVIDIA is a 7150 and am stuck trying to edit with it at least for a while...in CS4 when I playback 720/24P (AVCHD) clips they are jerky and some frames are dropped, is it possible for me to do offline editing, to specify a lower preview/playback resolution for when I am scrubbing?

I don't know that a lower preview resolution would really help. The problem isn't in the number of pixels (if you doubt that, use the free MainConcept transcoder to create DVCPRO-HD files, and they should work perfectly). What happens is that for any given frame that you scrub to, your computer has to load the nearest 'keyframe' (sometimes a second or two prior), and then use all of the intermediary 'delta' information to render the frame you scrubbed to.

The reason playback is so much easier is because it can load all of the data in order (the way the encoder intends). This is why (I infer) rewinding on DVRs and jumping around on YouTube/Vimeo playheads is also really jumpy. When you hit play it jumps to the nearest keyframe, which it can then play forward from smoothly.

Thanks Allen, makes sense on keyframes and so perhaps I'll have to buy a Quadro graphics card when I can afford one. In the interim, downloaded and tried to use the MainConcept DVCPRO-HD transcoder, [FONT=&quot]to transcode AVCHD clips shot in 720/24p. I found the .mts clip from the cam, loaded into the program and then….nothing. I cannot access the Output window, I cannot type in it, I cannot push any button to start the transcoding, nothing. I cannot push any buttons in the Processing window either, the only windows I have access to are the “Transcode To” and “Input” windows but nothing below them, I can see those lower windows but cannot use them. Any thoughts on how else I might transcode or otherwise down-rez my clips for editing?

Happy to report that the transcoder works, am now able to scrub and playback smoothly on my older PC! One other question: in Premiere Pro how can I merge two project timelines together? I have one project for the first half of my film, another for the second half, I edited each separately and now want to join them together but can't seem to find a merge command, and Import only seems to work for files, not for timeline sequences?

Way back in Premiere 6.0 I was able to do File > Import > Project and it let me choose to add it to the beginning, the current time indicator, or at the end. I'd imagine something like that ought to still exist.

That still works, don't know how I missed it before but at least we've established that: A. I need to take a break from editing this film and/or B. I am retarded :)

Thanks for the help, hope I can repay the favor sometime.

Haha, no worries. Can't wait to see what you come up with (assuming you're allowed to distribute it, that is). :)

I have both CS4 and FCP and ended up using FCP for everything. Am I alone in this? AVCHD dumps in perfectly and the clips I want overcranked, I use Cimema Tools.
Does CS4 have an easier way?

Only downside to FCP that I've found, Is I use a ridiculous amount of hard drive space with all of the clips. I run a system with 5TB so not a huge issue, but still... Kind of a pain to go in and clean up the closet.

CS4 handles AVCHD natively so it's good if you have a fast enough PC but mine is two years old and hence I need to first transcode to DVCPRO HD before I can cut anything.

cs4 = Drag native clip onto time line, for overcranked stuff just have to right click and interpret at any fps you want.

So I have pretty much all the hardware I need for a Hackintosh and I still have the un-opened Mac OS X 10.5.6 & Final Cut Express retail copies. I am a novice that likes to have some features that upper tier software has. I was headed in the direction of FCE until I read this thread and now I'm undecided (uncommitted to FCE as they are still un-opened) Can anyone with experience with both or one give me a preface on the differences: likes, dislikes, etc. and make a suggestion for me. I appreciate it :)

my machine:
Q9650
UD3R
4870
4Gb

Thanks again!

I have a quad hackintosh running along my real macs and haven't had a glitch editing! I'm using FCP not FCE... If you really want to use both (FCP/FCE & CS4), you can install CS4 on the Mac side or do a dual Install and run it on windows

So I just found out about this update and was very excited, but I am having a couple issues I am hoping someone is willing to help me figure out. First and most importantly, when I use the 1080 30p preset on AVCHD and then I drop in 1080 30p footage, it isn't native. I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Every other preset drops in footage of coordinating type just fine and needs no rendering. I did some test shooting in the PH 1080 30P and then dragged it to the AVCHD 1080 30p timeline and I get the red line. Is anyone else having this problem or know what I might be doing wrong?

My other problem is that with the 720 24p, 1080 24p, and 720 60p modes, they are not running in real time and I am getting a lot of jumpiness. I think my computer is strong enough, but maybe not? I am running a 2.8ghz Core 2 Duo with a 64bit processor on Vista 64. I have 6 gigs of Ram. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 3670.

Can anyone offer me any help? Thanks in advance!!!!
