Thanks Barry, good to know that something with 2GB RAM will scrub 720 clips smoothly.2GB with Win XP Pro.
I have an NVIDIA GeForce, how does it function differently than the Quadro? Also, Barry has a Quadro card (built for this industry), not a gaming series like the GeForce in most laptops.
I have an NVIDIA GeForce, how does it function differently than the Quadro?
Thanks Allen, and funny you should specifically mention the GeForce 9600, I priced one out at Best Buy on Friday! My current NVIDIA is a 7150 and am stuck trying to edit with it at least for a while...in CS4 when I playback 720/24P (AVCHD) clips they are jerky and some frames are dropped, is it possible for me to do offline editing, to specify a lower preview/playback resolution for when I am scrubbing? That's a great question that I've been looking for an answer to for some time. The best I can tell is that the Quadro series is built for industry calculations like video editing and mining excavation renders, while gaming cards are built for gaming.
The former is far, far more expensive and the only reason I can tell is because they are just "better" for those industries. I've yet to see any benchmarks illustrating this or a technical explanation, so there you go.
You may be interested in this guy who claims his computer now detects his GeForce 9600 as a Quadro, and as a result he sees better performance in After Effects.
Thanks Allen, makes sense on keyframes and so perhaps I'll have to buy a Quadro graphics card when I can afford one. In the interim, downloaded and tried to use the MainConcept DVCPRO-HD transcoder, [FONT="]to transcode AVCHD clips shot in 720/24p. I found the .mts clip from the cam, loaded into the program and then….nothing. I cannot access the Output window, I cannot type in it, I cannot push any button to start the transcoding, nothing. I cannot push any buttons in the Processing window either, the only windows I have access to are the “Transcode To” and “Input” windows but nothing below them, I can see those lower windows but cannot use them. Any thoughts on how else I might transcode or otherwise down-rez my clips for editing?I don't know that a lower preview resolution would really help. The problem isn't in the number of pixels (if you doubt that, use the free MainConcept transcoder to create DVCPRO-HD files, and they should work perfectly). What happens is that for any given frame that you scrub to, your computer has to load the nearest 'keyframe' (sometimes a second or two prior), and then use all of the intermediary 'delta' information to render the frame you scrubbed to.
The reason playback is so much easier is because it can load all of the data in order (the way the encoder intends). This is why (I infer) rewinding on DVRs and jumping around on YouTube/Vimeo playheads is also really jumpy. When you hit play it jumps to the nearest keyframe, which it can then play forward from smoothly.
Happy to report that the transcoder works, am now able to scrub and playback smoothly on my older PC! One other question: in Premiere Pro how can I merge two project timelines together? I have one project for the first half of my film, another for the second half, I edited each separately and now want to join them together but can't seem to find a merge command, and Import only seems to work for files, not for timeline sequences?Yup, gotcha in your other topic.
That still works, don't know how I missed it before but at least we've established that: A. I need to take a break from editing this film and/or B. I am retardedWay back in Premiere 6.0 I was able to do File > Import > Project and it let me choose to add it to the beginning, the current time indicator, or at the end. I'd imagine something like that ought to still exist.
Planning to enter it into a couple of film festivals and if we get in then you are definitely invited to the screening.Haha, no worries. Can't wait to see what you come up with (assuming you're allowed to distribute it, that is).![]()
So I have pretty much all the hardware I need for a Hackintosh and I still have the un-opened Mac OS X 10.5.6 & Final Cut Express retail copies. I am a novice that likes to have some features that upper tier software has. I was headed in the direction of FCE until I read this thread and now I'm undecided (uncommitted to FCE as they are still un-opened) Can anyone with experience with both or one give me a preface on the differences: likes, dislikes, etc. and make a suggestion for me. I appreciate it
