Crews.TV Stills - Now available uncompressed

Hey guys, we've posted a zip file with a bunch of uncompressed stills from the Crews.TV tests - TIFF frame grabs from the AVCHD and Intra recordings.

Link is in the update on the top of the 'AF100 Stress Test' article on Crews.TV - four grabs, two codecs - eight pics in all.

A reminder, of course, the AVCHD implementation in the camera we used is NOT the final version it may still get better. And yes, of course, nothing in our sample footage is really pushing the AVCHD codec to it's limits but we think it provides a pretty good baseline to compare for most usage scenarios.

cool

im not sure what it is, but the two frame grabs gives me a sharper look with the avchd as opposed to the avc intra.

I just want to say thanks for the really straight up way you guys have reported on this.

ah. here comes teh pixel peeping storm. barry get your maalox ready

Yeah, it's inevitable I guess. But nothing really holds up to pixel peeping... :) The AVCHD is lossier than the Intra, but I don't think it's substantially so by any measure. Can't wait for the final version and some serious stress tests. I think it'll do surprisingly well.

AVCHD is actually very nice. To really see the difference (like I said, it's actually pretty good), put the two images on their own layer in Photoshop and look at the blue channel only. Not bad for a pre-production model. As an HVX owner, those blocks what have been pretty chunky compared to this.

Beginning the pixel peeping.. lol, no notreally actually because this is a shot recompressed as jpg and then to the web so note completely useful, and even less so because this isn't the finished model, but regardless:

Of course in motion, at normal levels of magnification and with normal colouring none of that is at all evident :) And that's where pixel-peeping fails - we're looking at stills of a single frame of many, that in motion at 25 per second deliver an image that seems visually excellent.

But we all know that, yet can't help ourselves.

To my eyes, the AVCHD shots look cleaner than the AVC-Intra shots.
It is amazing but to mine as well - though I didn't pixelpeep every area of every shot but the ones I did... wow. Just on personal preference alone, the AVCHD do look cleaner.

It may be a totally different story when there's tons of motion. It will be interesting to see how AVCHD stands up stressed. But, wow. I'm pretty amazed. Jan/Barry you were right. This does look good, so far.

Well, I don't know enough to really be thinking this...

But I feel like the AVC-Intra would be delivering an image truer to what the sensor is actually outputting. The AVCHD is visually compressing it more, resulting in some softening of fine details.

Noise is a fine detail, so it gets softened by the AVCHD compression whereas it is more accurately recorded in AVC-Intra.

Frame 3 AVC-INTRA shows slightly more "chin fur", so which shot would you choose? :cheesy:

I'm sure the model would love to read this thread...

We certainly noticed less noise in the dark areas of the AVCHD (not sure if any of those stills demonstrate it well) - I put that down to softening as a result of compression.

While interesting to see a stills comparison, I wouldn't consider this test very stressful. Pull some frames with a lot of motion in them, spinning wheels, camera movement, subject movement and see what you get then.

Can't wait to see uncompressed stills & footage from the final production model.
To be particular this isn't "uncompressed footage" AVC-I is compressed as well. It would really be interesting to see UNCOMPRESSED vs. AVC-I vs. AVCHD in various situations.
