That cruise ship off Northern California was allowed to dock on Monday. 19 out of 21 positives were the crew (~1,100 employees), out of 2,400 passengers, there were two. All quarantined at the moment and/or receiving treatments.

Only 46 people on the Grand Princess were tested.

I was thinking about that ship too. Nothing makes sense!

Not enough data to draw a conclusion. These are the stats worldwide, which roughly falls in line with the WHO estimate of a 3.4 percent case fatality rate.

133,399 infected
4,952 dead

3.4 percent is great odds if you're gambling in Vegas. But when you're gambling with your life, is reason to pause. And if you're in a high risk group (as I am), those numbers can double or triple.

I feel the same way about cruise ships. I can think of several billion things I'd rather do than go on one of those.
I've lived in South Florida for almost 19 years and have only gone on one three hour tour. A three hour tour (OK, I think it was about 4 1/2 hrs but nonetheless).

As to cruise ships - they generally have to have impeccable sanitary conditions but that's mostly due to the potential dangers of the Norovirus, where the casualty list far exceeds the CoVid-19.

As to 46 tested, that's true. But only because others didn't ask to be tested. They felt fine.*

*The incubation period is two weeks, so other cases may still develop. Still, given that it's been at least a week, the odds are getting lower and lower.

NCAA Men's and Women's basketball tournaments cancelled.

MLB Opening Day pushed back at least two weeks.

NHL Suspends play.

NASCAR running the next two races with no fans.

Ugh, I had norovirus once. It was the worst. Vomit coming out one end. Diarrhea out the other. Brutal.

Jesus, man. The market is taking another dump today.
A projectile diarrhea dump...
Of course made even worse by the Saudi v Russia oil war.
Perfect timing! Bye bye bull market, I loved you passionately for 11 years.

Too weird. I comment on your market dump with projectile diarrhea and there you are with Norovirus (which I had 3 times shooting for NCL). Things have taken a dark turn...

It's time to start buying back in a bit at a time on the way down (don't listen to ANYONE about investment advice. So ignore that).

I'm pretty sure I posted this story before, but is worth repeating in this volatile market so that it imprints on your head not to listen to these dunderhead experts. During the 2008/9 crash the Dow had sunk from around 12,000 to 9,000 and it was clear that it was going to continue to tank. A noted investment pundant was on the Today show. When asked what individuals should do, he said to hold, which was dead wrong because it was clear the market was going to continue to tank. But ok, you're down this far. Sit tight.

Then the Dow went all the way down to 6000. It was clear it was bottoming out. The noted pundent was on the Today show again and they asked what people should do. With a heavy heart he said "Sell". Of course, if you followed that advice, you would have been ruined as the Dow was at the bottom and soon recovered.

I gasp when I hear what these idiots are saying on the financial shows today. They are in some sort of isolated bubble outside of reality. They use all sorts of financial jargon to rationalize what is happening to the market. Today, one guy actually said 'it's not the virus that is causing the market to tank'. Read that again and then tell me you're going to take advice from one of these idiots.

Mark Zuckerberg's foundation just announced it will purchase two diagnostic machines capable of running tests for the Coronavirus. Considering that the current outbreak has--as of Wednesday--been labeled a global pandemic, this seems like a pretty good use of resources. The foundation's purchase will quadruple the capacity of testing machines currently available in San Francisco.

Bill Gates is funding a home-test kit that can be used by residents in Seattle and sent out for testing. The results would be available within two days, and would be shared with local health officials, who would notify individuals who tested positive.

By making testing equipment more readily available, individuals who may have been infected but aren't exhibiting serious enough symptoms to seek medical attention will be able to self-quarantine to prevent the spread of the further virus. The plan supported by Gates might be able to process thousands of tests a day when it's up and running.

Yep, 2008 was a financial crisis, this is a medical crisis. Fix the medical crisis then you'll fix the financial one.

So much work lost today, in just my tiny market... myself and many others. In between panic attacks, I'm stuggling to keep my fingers from typing something stupid. I'll let it rest at that.
