Covid-19 (Novel Coronavirus) - Effects on the production industry

Well, h3ll- 2 days after my 3 day NY shoot, I have a cold. But is it just a cold? (a question I don't believe I've ever asked myself previously).
Don't believe I've had a cold in 3yrs. Got the flu shot this year.

Never have so many debated so much about something so hard to determine the risk of (to laymen)...

But I had an appt at an ophthalmologist today, said I had a cold, they said "oh?!?", and I said I just got back from NY.
They said "bye, see you in 2 weeks"...

(And a preemptive "I already had a shot of Santa Teresa Premium Venezuelan Rum‎", (mmm... warm) before DLD calls in a script of vodka for me!)

So, you see better now?

It's serious. We get that. We're washing our hands and avoiding crowds. Check.

What more do you want? Should we panic? Should we raid Costco and get all the toilet paper and bottled water? Or do you want us to huddle in a corner and cry? I mean, seriously, what are you expecting to accomplish with this discussion?

My understanding was that this thread was established to discuss the effects on the production industry, a legitimate concern. Being upset because some people aren't acting as upset as others are, seems rather off the topic. And those telling people it's just a flu, are making equally unproductive comments.

Not sure who this comment is aimed at, but I'll answer:

No one is suggesting panic, quite the reverse. The only thing I and others are suggesting is to listen to the experts, rather than those with an agenda. We are all in this together and the time for action to stop this thing is now; be calm, do as the experts instruct and we can avoid the worst of this thing. Ignore the advice and our healthcare systems will be overwhelmed.

Not sure who you feel is upset, maybe some posts read that way to you, but I don't see anyone being upset - just some robust pushbacks. Anyway, hope your in-laws are fine.

Our CDC has just basically advised that all people at "higher risk" should self quarantine. As to who is classified as being high risk, they listed "older adults" and those who are already having health problems. I didn't see a definition of who they consider "older" but I have heard it's those 60+.

I'll take your Yahoo article and give you in response something a little more in depth:

This is like predicting the NFL playoffs in August, right after the preseason.

And, for those in England, it's like predicting that Leicester would struggle to stay up in the PL for the 2015-16 season because they struggled in 2014-15 and then - oh, the horror - fired the manager who saved them from the relegation.

For you and me it might be, but not for the experts who do this stuff day in day out.

The one you linked to could have been a useful statistical analysis. The problem is that the straight-up statistics doesn't apply to this type of behavioral scenarios. Let's say, numbers aside, the first cluster of infection caught people unaware. Once it has become publicized, however, folks rush to stores, buy sanitizers, face masks and a bunch of ethanol and toilet paper. That change in behavior changes everything that comes after it. It makes the future development unpredictable.

As a side note, if I hadn't made my thoughts on this clear by now -- these precautions should be taking place every cold&flu season. Everyone should sneeze into a disinfected paper towel, everyone should sanitize their hands, nose and lips during these viral contamination periods. And, to go further, I'd say that those who tend to suffer from infections should be the first to do so but, as Eric mentioned, we no longer consider these casualties as excessive and, due to that, skip on the elementary life-saving measures.

I'll even say the same about these 1.25 million dead from car accidents (accidents which additionally result in millions of injured) - despite great advanced in the automotive safety over the years with seat belts and air bags and so on, most drivers but, especially, those prone to getting into accidents and suffering the greatest bodily harm, should wear motorcycle type body armor inside the vehicle - plastic helmets, shin guards, chest protectors, neck restraints. Yes, one could look like the Robocop with them on, but this could save hundreds of thousands of lives and millions of the disabled.

PS. If I sound like risk averse, that's because I am.

I was told yesterday that Panasonic had privately issued a 'no travel' policy this week.

And talking to a friend a little earlier today, they said that one of our big network clients is having a meeting about Covid-19, which probably means work is going to go from slow to stop.

In my client call sheet e-mail...

"To note for this shoot - given the recent concerns around viruses, we are working hard to create an environment in which everyone feels safe and healthy! As such, this will be a "No Handshake" shoot. We've found lots of people on sets are "tapping feet" instead...a footshake if you will.

Additionally, if you have any cold, flu, or illness symptoms, please let us know before the shoot and we will work out a replacement. This is generally important, but in the current climate -- it is essential."

This is another way how coronavirus could affect business. You get a simple sickness that everyone gets a couple or few times a year, and as contractors, there's no paid sick days, so if the sickness isn't too bad (like a common cold), you typically work through it. Even more so, someone like myself who some years (thankfully not this year) will get a bad cough from bronchitis for an entire month or two (in an effort to live up to my last name), typically during the winter months. A cough that is not contagious nor inhibiting from working, but now we have to deal with many basic and common sicknesses causing a stigma to the extent of possibly being replaced on a job.

The organises of NAB have issued a release over next month’s NAB in Las Vegas. The show was scheduled to take place between 18-22nd of April. Now, the show has been cancelled over coronavirus concerns.

The press release reads as follows…

Dear NAB Show community,

As you know, we have been carefully monitoring coronavirus developments both domestically and globally over the past few weeks.

In the interest of addressing the health and safety concerns of our stakeholders and in consultation with partners throughout the media and entertainment industry, we have decided not to move forward with NAB Show in April. We are currently considering a number of potential alternatives to create the best possible experience for our community.

This was not an easy decision. Fortunately, we did not have to make this decision alone, and are grateful to our NAB Show community for engaging with us as we grappled with the rapidly-evolving situation. This Show is as much yours as it is ours, and it is important to us that we move forward together.

For nearly 100 years, NAB Show has provided superior value and the best possible experience for exhibitors and attendees. We knew that if we could not deliver on those expectations, we would not move forward. More importantly, keeping the community safe and healthy is NAB’s highest priority; therefore, we are deferring to the developing consensus from public health authorities on the challenges posed by coronavirus.

We are still weighing the best potential path forward, and we ask you for your patience as we do so. We are committed to exploring all possible alternatives so that we can provide a productive setting where the industry can engage with the latest technology, hear from industry thought leaders and make the game-changing connections that drive our industry forward.

I want to stress that despite our disappointment at how this year’s Show has been impacted by global public health concerns, we are more excited than ever about the future of NAB Show and our relationship with you.

We are grateful for each and every member of our Show community. It is your passion for the industry that makes NAB Show a success year after year, and it is that same passion that will drive us into the future as we look ahead to new possibilities later this year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Gordon H. Smith

It would have been the PR blunder of the century to have continued on with NAB under the present conditions.
Now the question is, will CineGear, INTERBee and IBC be on the chopping block? Or will this run it's course and then blow
over as it somewhat appears to be doing in China?
