Convert AVCHD Quickly?

I am brand new to this camera from a previous little knowledge editing FCP with miniDV tapes. 2 questions: 1.) If I want to copy the video clips from the SD card to my MAC Pro hard drive, can I put the card in a card reader and copy? Which directory on the SD card are the clips in and how are they named? 2.) Is there a quick way to convert these raw files in something like Toast or Compressor without using an editing program. i.e. I am playing with shooting some old 8mm video off a screen, and don't want to edit, just convert to something I can put on vimeo or on a DVD. Thanks in advance. I do have latest Final Cut studio and Toast, plus Neo 2 which came with camera.

1) The best way to manage your AVCHD files use AVCCAM Viewer for Mac. First step : register your AVCCAM to PASS (P2 Asset Support System) and down load AVCCAM Viewer for Mac. For more information pelase visit
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/desk/e/download.htm#avccamvmac. After imported into the harddrive, you can rename the folders, video and clips in the Easy Editing menu of AVCCAM Viewer.
2). Direct import from SD Card also possible from iMovie (using SDHC Card reader) then share it with various size for upload (youtube or vimeo).

OK, this is frustrating. Went to the link to sign up and in the input field where they ask for your business type, nothing will go in...it's a required field. Wonder if they are curious why no one has registered lately? Thanks for the reply though. Good info!

Gord,

The Panny website is really weird, like a bad translation of a Japanese horror movie gone bad. If you fish around enough, everything does work, and the software is solid, except for the translation.

Intuitive or easy, it isn't.

1.) sure you can copy the files from a card reader, I'd suggest to drag & drop everything you see in the root of the card, the videos are in:

/PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/

they're named _______.mts (but if you use avccam viewer to download they'll be .m2ts)

2.) in fact toast can transcode them to almost anything you want, but at least my mac takes double the time than the original length..

I'd also like to know if there's some app that transcodes in realtime or faster than toast..

This has been a sore subject with many of us here.

I wish someone could organize that page and make it easier to use than it is.

you can't type anything into that field, there's a button next to it called "select" click on that and a pop up menu will come up, then you select from that specific menu...
