Continous lighting for Stills

So i shoot almost exclusively video on my 7d...till a bit recently getting more into stills also (hobby), so i'm used to continuous lighting systems. i don't know if this may sound stupid but is continuous lighting used alot in stills photography or is flash photography more the norm? Naturally I'd be much more comfortable doing continuous lighting but that's not very energy efficient. Just something i was wondering really.

Depends what the job is but mostly its strobes (flash). You can get a lot more light, imagine a few 20k hmi's but portable like a fresnel.

yeh... I just finished two months of solid shooting strobes. Photogenic monolights not speedlights. the shutter window of time comes from the flash (not the shutter in the camera) and its ridiculous, something like 1/8000 and I'm at f16 to get correct exposure

like here's one

You know i've struggled shooting stills under my hot lights (600w and below) in a studio environment. Then last week i had a chance to do some headshots with real studio flashes (2400Ws for 3 heads) and MAN what a difference. I was able to get so much more with so much less stress on the talent. I decided i NEEDED to upgrade to flashes for this type of work but i didn't have more than about $300 for it.
Here is the pieces im looking into. All of them have great reviews and should work wonderfully for studio and location stills

I havent pulled the trigger yet on this order but i am very close to it.

Cactus v5's are the best cheap triggers atm.

Jambredz, just get Elinchrom d-lite it 4 200w/400w set and you will be happy :) these also have built in triggers so no need to buy triggers either. Very good quality lights and the price is great too. About the same price as Alienbee's but Elinchroms are better in all aspects.

I just bought a set of Alien Bees and pocketwizards. Truthfully, you only need 1 remote trigger as the other heads will slave off the first. If you have a camera with a built in flash (like a D7000 or T2i) you can trigger the studio heads with that thing. It will get totally gobbled up by the light of the studio heads. Continuous lighting has it's place, but strobes are SO much nicer. A couple of small modeling lamps, and you're golden for WYSIWYG.

I'll second the Alien Bees and pocketwizards. I only use DSLR's for stills. Just got a 5DMII because the 5D's mirror came off. Good for production stills and stage work.

I've had sync delay problems with triggering one flash off another, plus the recycle time for the on camera flash (or a speedlight) is slow

+1 on alien bees and elichrome, also I like photogenic

here's another I took

Both are great... Strobes are probably more versatile for photography. Strobes are good for freezing action and getting nice sharp images. You can also bring a battery to places that have no power and get 200 or so flashes (with continuous, it would need to be a generator). It's easier to compete with the sun with strobes.

I like continuous because it's got a really, really cool look to it as far as colors and skin tones go (tungsten). I'm also a fan of longer exposures and slightly blurred images. The what you see is what you get nature of continuous lighting is nice too. Also, you can use your iphone and shoot video with continuous! :)

man...thanks for all this info guys. I'm really just a hobbyist wetting my feet in the stills side of this. Figured why not used the 7d for what it was actually built for lol

You can't trigger strobes optically (without triggers) on bright daylight. btw, Alienbees have also problems with color temperature and it will be different with different power setting. Elicnhroms have constant color temperature. I've shot few times with the d-lite it 4's and the inbuilt triggers are great. No need to hassle with triggers and batteries anymore. Elinchrom inbuilt triggers also have high speed sync mode which will enable you to shoot with highger shutter speed of 1/250 with 5D vs 1/160 or 1/200. So basicly you can use one or two clicks faster shutter than with other triggers (pocket wizards offer this option too, but they cost hundreds of $$$ and are useless if you go with Elinchrom). There's really no reason to buy AB's, but there are many reasons to buy Elinchrom's (even more so when you live in Jamaica).

You mean besides the fact they cost me $2k less? That was reason enough for me. I shoot RAW, so I can adjust color temps if I care to. I am also able to shoot 1/250th with my Bees. You may want to check your info again. Sounds like you might be out of date.

So, to recap, my Bees cost less, shoot at higher sync speeds just like the Elinchroms, work with my pocketwizards (need those to remote trigger the cameras too), and are made right here in the USA. Potential issue with color balance at low power settings on the Bees. Since I shoot RAW, I'm not all that worried about it.

You stay with your Elinchrom's, and I'll stay with my Bees. K-Thx.

Huh? Elinchrom D-Lite it 400/400w set costs 800$. Two AB800's cost 560$, two AB softboxes 240$, two stands 140$, CyberCync transmitter 60$, two CyberCync receivers 140$. In totalsimilar Alienbee set would cost 1140$. That's hardly 2$k more for Elinchrom. In addition, You would get 160w less power with AB's and no carrying cases for the lights and stands. Not even talking about the technical benefits and better quality of Elinchrom.

Out of date? Cameras don't magically update its hardware. Maximum sync speed is determined by the camera model only, not lights. 5D MKII max sync speed is 1/250 perioid. Cheap triggers will not give you clean 1/250. Elinchrom and Pocket Wizards will.

Sounds like you don't know what you are talking about. "K-Thx".

Ok, let's try this again.

My purchase:

1 AB1600 (640ws)
1 AB800 (400ws)
1 PCB Large Octodome
1 Vagabond mini DC pack
1 Spare battery for Vagabond mini
1 Pocketwizard MultiMax
2 Pocketward Flextt5

I already have stands, cases, umbrellas, etc. from my film work.

When I compared costs on Elinchrom, Profoto, AB, and some others, getting a mobile kit put together was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper going with the ABs. I read all kinds of stuff about color shifting at lower power, etc. Whatever. In general I will be out on the beach shooting bikini models, so I'll be using full power.

My cameras all sync at 1/250. Pocketwizards support that just fine. I don't know why you are talking about cheap triggers.

Like I said. If the Elinchrom's are working for you, that's great. The Bees are doing what I need them to do, and I am happy with them. So why the need to put down other people's gear?

As I've mentioned, I am VERY new to strobing. I've been a sports photographer since before most people on this list were born. But this is all new to me. I've surveyed what I wanted and needed, found a solution that works for "ME", and am happy with it.

Is that ok with you?

Relax people, Alienbee, Elinchrome whatever ... I'm using photogenic with impact triggers and make a bundle. Doesn't matter just make sure the client pays up and its not hard to roi quick

Exactly. Use what works for you and be done with it. Somebody always has to jump in with "my stuff is better than your stuff drama..."

I'm sure my Bees are going to do just fine at the bikini contest tonight, the 3 sisters shoot tomorrow, and my beach bikini shoot later this month.
