Clean HDMI out for 5D Mark III delayed until May?

Well, you get 4:2:2 and a better codec, but the other issues of the camera (sharpness, FPN), are unresolved. It's an improvement, but the market seems to be moving much faster than Canon. Still, if you want full frame, there are not many options, and with this, the 5D3 matches one of the biggest advantages of the D800.

... 5D3 still has stealth factor and ability to also do high-quality stills.

Well...after i have my Blackmagic Cinema Camera... the latitude of my Canon 5D markIII is not that exciting any more. My BMCC seems to handle highlights wwwwayyyyy better than my RAW still pictures taken with the MarkIII. A DXO Mark comparison of the two would be fun.

^ Well, Canon calls it RAW, and they should know, so it must be RAW, right? Same for Sony, Nikon, everyone.

edit: yes, this is how boring the Canon bootcamp has become in recent times: we're discussing how we'd have to call something we can only dream of (but that other cameras have)

4:2:2, better codec, and removal of recording time limit. It's a great update, I would say.
And I hope there will be a slight improvement in resolution also. I always thought no clean hdmi was due to low resolved lines at its censor and the only way to give clean 1080i hdmi output is to improve resolving lines at its censor. Maybe I am completely wrong there, but we'll find out soon.

dun see many good 5d3 shooters, so i really think 5d3 suck. unlike bmcc, press a button and wow! dynamic range! great camera, i'm getting one

"So people never actually wanted the HDMI full anyway? Or what is this sudden bitching about?"

More naive words never spoken.

Pretty sure he's trolling.. he has a history of posting completely irrelevant, (purposely) misinformed statements around here. I find it quite amusing :) Helps lighten the mood a bit during heated discussions.

From the Canon Website: A firmware update for EOS 5D Mark III is scheduled to be available on April 30, 2013.

Haha, at least they kept their promise about April...just in time! And from the language below, it seems they're trying to be pretty clear that we aren't going to really see any sort of improvement in image quality (as expected). It's more about "workflow efficiency" and "monitoring".

"Uncompressed HDMI Output SupportWhen shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera's HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting."

This is not, like some people seem to believe, Raw video. All HDMI out is uncompressed, this is simply bypassing internal H.264 to allow you to record the in ProRes/DnxHD/XDCam/ect.

indeed: it is still 8-bit, and with color subsampling (probably 4:2:2, right?)

It will undoubtedly be exactly like the C100 out...including 3:2 pulldown needed for 24p (and 2:2 for 30p). So, yes, 8-bit 4:2:2...but without the right 8-bits of course.
