Clean HDMI out for 5D Mark III delayed until May?

"we’re incredibly proud to be showing a special, pre-release version of the Canon 5D Mk III working with the Ninja-2. Canon plan to make this firmware update available in May"

That's disappointing. I guess this is what Canon learned from BMD, announce and delay!

They did announce a game changer:

(if that's not a new game, I don't know what is)

Hopefully it's delayed so they can put in more features than just clean HDMI out (100+Mbps IPB would be helpful and any way to improve image quality, peaking, etc.). Haven't used my 5D3's for video since getting an FS700 + Speed booster. Might use them again if decent firmware upgrade. Really hard to go back to 5D3 soft+artifact-ridden video. FS700 looks just as good color-wise as 5D3 with decent PP (with or without post work); Speed Booster brings full frame (1.09 crop) and +1 T-stop of light. 5D3 still has stealth factor and ability to also do high-quality stills.

FS700+Speed Booster can closely match 5D3 look, only much sharper and far less compression artifacts (external recorder). For some shots, the internal AVCHD works fine, however.

Kit lens (Sony 18-200), autofocus, image stabilzation, auto iso, stock picture profile 6, minor post work: https://vimeo.com/58075075 (first real test when I got the camera).

I don't want to get attacked here but I am with New_Zealand on this one.(Remembering not liking the gh1 when it came out and getting a bunch crap of hating in here...:cheesy: Remember, it is only cameras and opinions.)

Of course a FS700 can give you beautiful images and I don't want to trash anyones work but there is something about it that I don't like. If it is a dynamic range issue, color range issue or what ever I do not know. Without a better way to put it, too me, Sony often looks videoish. The GH cameras have the same problem to a degree, but not as much as the Sonys. I am a little intrigued about the GH3 though, havn't seen anything really great shot with it yet though. Maybe because I havn't looked. I am too busy writing to follow the industry at the moment.

With the 5D's Canon has done something amazing. The problem is that they fall apart very quickly in wides. Especially if there is any foliage in the background.

I seldom look at specs and I don't agree with the notion that resolution is king. If the less compression of HDMI-out will fix the wides (as in not sharper but less muddiness on leaves and such) I might upgrade to 5dMiii instead of Black Magic/GH3/Scarlet/whatever from my 5DMii.

I have also been thinking about the c100, but have not seen anything great on that camera either. But it should look like the c300 I guess. Which is fine. But still, there is something magical about the 5Ds that I can't put my finger on.

Regardless of any excitement Black Magic's offerings have stirred up, the 5D firmware update is the first thing I search for on my daily dvxuser checkup.

Well one of the magical things is that the 5d is soft. It is filmlike in it's rolloff. Fullframe makes it look a bit like anamorphic s35. If it would be sharp and with an s35mm sensor it would look a lot more like the FS700 and the C300. FS700 does actually look like reality. If you point it somewhere, it will look pretty much like what you saw. Not so with the 5d. Everything gets this romantic look.

And... it is awesome. I agree. When I shot with the FS700 and the 5dmarkIII as a B-cam, I was so surprised how much I liked the 5d look more. FS700 did some GREAT slowmotion shots for us but the 5d gave us also that certain "thing" which I wasn't able to completely replicate with the FS700.

Do you think the the better rolloff is only from being softer? I know it is a popular stance but even if you soften up Sony image you do not get the same look as from a 5D. You just get general softness. There is something more to it. And, even though reality is perhaps not what I am looking for, my eyes have better roll off than FS700 footage. And I don't think the world looks videoish either.:cheesy: Maybe I just need glasses...
There are many cameras that are sharp that do not have that Sony look.

The C300 is as sharp as the Sonys but has a much better image in my eyes. Or the Blackmagic, or the Red. Even the GH cameras look better than Sony to me.

But you might be right that the softness probably add to the romance of 5D footage.

The Sony F3 (with SLOG) has incredible roll-off compared to the FS700 or the 5D. Great looking image.

In terms of the update, here is what I think happened.
Since there were delays for the update to the 1DC, they didn't want to steal any thunder from that camera and risk having potential clients looking at the 5D in the interim. So they delayed the 5D update too.

Yeah, you are right about the F3. That camera produces pretty sweet footage.

I'm not so sure that the 5D3 firmware is delayed. That one guy at Atomos who made an offhand comment during a product demo could simply be wrong, or just misspoke. If anything, the fact that Atomos has been running that firmware for weeks now should indicate more that it is ready to go than that it's being delayed.
Canon has an event on the 23rd, and according to Canon Rumors is still on track for an April release of the 5D3 firmware. Of course, all of this could be wrong and we won't see it until Christmas...

Didn't Chuck Westfall say in the Dan Chung interview it would be released sometime in April? I would guess he's more of an authority than guy from Atomos, but who knows.

EDIT: this is the one... http://vimeo.com/63635397

Good old Canon. They know just how to suck the thrill out of anything. I'm not even excited about the Mk. III firmware anymore; at least not after the Blackmagic announcements. I'm sort of expecting this 4:2:2 out "upgrade" to be a negligible difference in overall quality.

Yes, but it will allow for attachment to, say, an Atomos Ninja-2 (probably the best option at the moment because it will remove 3:2 pulldown on the fly), and thus have different flavors of ProRes to choose from. You'll get a much better codec than what records internally, and doing significant grading to 5D3 footage will be a possibility, so there's some excitement to be had from finally doing proper color correction to full frame footage.

Of course, that involves actually doing color correction. For those who tend to spit out projects with minimal touchups, or who think Premiere's Fast Color Corrector is all you need, well they won't see much difference.

The other thing that is important is seeing what happens with the sharpness. We do not know to date how much of the softness of the image is due to in camera processing. Thus the HDMI output may be sharper; however the moire and aliasing may also be more present. If we get the best of both worlds, sharp but without those artifacts, that is a very big deal for the viability of this camera.

I don't think you'll see any difference of this kind. There's literally no difference in this with the C100 AVCHD vs Ninja-2.

There's almost no chance. I'm predicting that it will be a very underwhelming "upgrade", to say the least.
