I was under the impression that there was no such thing as a standard dovetail plate anymore.. as soon as you leave each series, and even inside a series there are so many custom plates and mods now its hard to peg. Im not a steadicam guy at all, so Mikko this is your area and im sure the knowledge would be much appreciated.

Your impression is correct Jarred, There are quite a few different sized Steadicam (& other brand) dovetailplates, hence the "plates" in my comment.

Just buy the RED-dove (?) adapters for the correct sized plate for your system.

In the current Steadicam line there are 2 sizes used: The Smaller for the "video/lighter" rigs; Flyer, Archer, Clipper. [Also SK/SK2, & Pro-vid] And the larger "film/big" rigs; Vector, Ultra and the slightly older Master.

I can't recall full compatibility in my head for all the others (Older Steadicams [Mod 3, etc..] and other brands like Pro, MK-V, etc..)

They are all pretty close.

Wow! Looks GREAT! Truly stunning industrial design guys! I see that the RED team went went with V-mount bricks, eh? Well, at least I already own a V-mount-to-Anton Bauer adapter already!

I was hoping for AB as well, but if that's the biggest "problem" that RED presents, I think I can live. :) I'm with you, I think the design is awesome.

Vlock has specific advantatges that outweigh AB, but as Rezfactor has mentioned, there are many V mount to AB adapter plates out there that will support all you guys with an AB collection.

Mikko, you are more familiar than me with the Tiffen line, aren't there at several different spec of dovetails within the current line-up, from Flyer to Ultra (plus the older 3A style dovetail?) And then there's the other manufacturers to consider...must be at least 6 different dovetails out there, not counting prosumer ones like the Bogen quick release.

My thought is that a lightweight assembly that attaches to the RED dovetails that offers the appropriate mounting holes for our dovetail plates will be a significant improvement over the current setup for most cameras where our dovetail has to be added/removed when going in and out of studio mode. Here it would be as simple as just sliding off the different bases. If the added elevation of this baseplate was an issue, then simply remove the dovetails and bolt to the bottom of the camera as usual.

I can't see a great advantage to having dovetail rails that fit a given Steadicam that bolt onto the body vs simply attaching a standard dovetail--just as much work (more, really) to swap out the rails than pull the plate when going to studio mode (certainly the rails will require more than two screws to secure them, as is the case with the dovetail).

Sorry Mikko, the previous post did not go up when expected (12 hour delay??!), it just showed up now. Obviously you addressed this.

So maybe I'm not getting it--what would be the advantage of individual dovetail sides vs a plate--the profile is exactly the same i.e. distance between camera and topstage, and both types need to be replaced to go to studio mode.

One postive feedback.

I think there is a lack in ergonomic design for the position of the hands.

THis is what it looks like now to me:

And i feel it should be more comfortable to be held. It should be like any new joystick design, or any Arri hand mount.

What do you think?

So the year's now ending and I'm wondering.....

Has a finalized version of Red-One been assembled in operational form?

Beautiful renders by the way, but I'm beginning to want the real deal with photos and all!

?

macgregor.. i love the design as it is right now being a normal bar.. as it allows you to put whatever grip you want onto it.. such as this:

I'll be knocking on the RED offices on January 1st at 12:00 trying to see if I can New Years Smooch™ Spike.

Maybe.

thanks Charles and Mikko for the feedback about the plates.. learned a few things there. Adapter plates seem like the logical way, maybe with a Red supplied bench riser.

Yeah, I gota scree with Charles. 2 screws does trump 4.

Though if the camera could always have the Steadicam dovetail installed durign a shoot, and then only the Tripod late needed to be switched out. That's one less plate to attach.

Plus if you used a Cat Griller (http://www.baer-bel.de/deutsch/produkte/produkte17.htm [for others than CP]) for your tripod you could mount the RED with nothind more than the RED-tail. Though again a dovetail would still be 2 less screws initily. But there is a height & weight difference there still.

Besides, if RED can get those dovetial peices to mount tools-free, then it beats out the screws :)

Also of note; the Flyer needs a gear on the dovetail plate, so this wouldn't work with a built in dovetail on RED. And this is where the weight savings would be most critical.

- Mikko ... isn't quite sure what's the best solution after all this, but thinks that less parts is cooler.

I think it's important to have a way to attach video rods even when the Red Rail is not attached (As in steadi-cam) You will need something very lightweight, just to hold a mattebox and focus motor.
Some thing like this...
