I dont know how I didn't catch this months ago, but it was truly excellent. I love long cuts, and such strong stories. It literally made me really sad, so I'm going to show this to every girl I know.
My goodness. This is one of the best films I've ever seen, irrespective of budget, duration or language. I loved the story, the directing, the long takes, the music and just about everything else. The actors were fantastic. You can really feel the love between Ernest and Angela. The usage of text which is usually considered a no-no worked really really well here when Angela lost the ability to speak clearly.
Loved it! Yah, you broke the 180 rule once or twice but the acting and story was excellent! My only minor gripe would be the camera guy readjusting the final shot a little too harshly once or twice.
Excellent work! I've done the bag over the head scene before, it can be tricky.
ok, so they broke a few "rules"...can we scrap all the tech talk and admire content?...color correction, framing, camera moves/technique, 180 rules, all the asides...blah blah....these folks took the most basic, the most available storyline and made a fantastic short movie. absolutely fantastic. i was gripped by the simplicity, as if i was in the room with the actors. fabulous work on a single location, 2 actor story. i am going to watch it again....and again....
That was incredible. I loved it. Brought me to tears and all. The acting was superb.
I didn't mind the violation of the 180 rule. It feelt justified.
Me being a DP reacted on the blown out window in the living room. But in the end it doesnt matter, the story moved me and that's what counts. Great work!
Everyone loves this short, lol. I have to be honest I can't watch something like this, just sort of too close to home I guess, not my style of film. I think it's a well done story but I prefer more upbeat subject matter and I'm not into love stories either...
Thanks for the comments. It is really pleasing to hear that you enjoy it so much.
It was an interesting process for us to make this film. Although we didn't put any specific rules on ourselves, we definitely wanted to simplify the process. We had spent so much time working on bigger projects that we wanted to make a film simply and cheaply and work with a very small and intimate crew. It was basically myself (as DoP) and the director. - Something that we have done quite often and found it yields great results in terms of acting and it is generally more fun and less(ish) stressful.
On the day we decided to just shoot with single takes. Everything except for the wide where Angela sits in the wheelchair and Ernest sits on the floor was pretty much shot in single takes. The shot at the end where the camera moves violently at one point was definitely a mistake on my part, I was too heavy with my movement responding to Ernest's movement. I highlighted this with Cristian afterwards and was keen to do another take but given the performance we decided not to. When it came to doing a few pickups days later we talked about reshooting that scene but didn't. Some people have talked about that shot negatively and some people find it adds to the feeling being uncomfortable/shocked by the moment.
The 180 degree rule breaking was a conscious choice and I personally don't think it breaks the rule in terms or orientation. In fact that was one of the shots we pickedup and still broke the rule!!! Also I don't think anyone just watching the film, i.e. non filmmakers would question it?
With the blown out windows (I quite like that look sometimes), I did plan to use ND gels in the windows but given our crew size and the fact that we shot the film in under 12 hours I couldn't justify the time it would have taken to set that up.
Very moving short film. I enjoyed it and especially liked the different tones of colour, reflecting on the narrative, and it being non linear really added to the story telling of the short. Great job and i look forward to seeing your future work!
