Capturing with the XHA1 w/o deck

Hey guys,
I don't have an XHA1 yet and have just assumed I would have to rent a deck for capturing but this ad on craigslist makes it sound like you can capture from the camera- I suppose this means you have to use the camera as a deck and the heads are engaged for that process but I was hoping that it was not the case... let me know- here is the ad that made me question:

No deck exists that would capture Canon 24F/30F footage from the A1. You have to use the camera or the HV20/30/40 to do that.

Oh god, are we back to this again? It was established in the other thread already that Sony only very recently retroactively incorporated this native 24 fps recording into the new HDV standard and even then it's not the same thing because Sony camera uses progressive imager and Canon uses interlaced chip. Even now I challenge you to name a non-Canon camera or a deck that can capture Canon 24F mode that you know for sure will work. By that I mean you point me to one documented cases where somebody, somewhere has take this camera/deck and capture 24F successfully from it (if you know somebody I'll even take your word for it). To my knowledge this has never been demonstrated anywhere. So my point stands: 99% of decks and non-Canon camera out there will not capture 24/30F footages correctly.

You said "No deck exists that would capture Canon 24F/30F footage". I am saying that you are wrong. You want proof? Read the wikipedia entry, follow the references. No, I don't have the XH-A1 myself, but I can google.

It does not matter what imagers the cameras use, it is the same format on tape.

P.S. WTF with message posting again? It started parsing the text again, adding BRs and converting quotes to HTML notation.

After I search I have found one Sony model that will support Canon 24F, the HVR-M35. The Z7 camera will also support it. So technically, you're right. But
the M35 is the ONLY model out there that'll do this. Is it going to be widely available enough so that it'll matter? Probably not. Contrary to popular belief we can actually turn lead into gold, but it's so damn expensive that it's impractical. Same deal here. I'll repeat my original point.

If you are buying an XH-A1 you should not count on finding a deck that will read the footage. Therefore you should plan accordingly and buy an HV series camera.

So you did not read wikipedia entry and did not follow the footnotes.

Your original point was "No deck exists that would capture Canon 24F/30F footage", which is obviously not true. Your revised statement does not say that such a deck does not exist, good.

You know what, this is just pointless. You insist on nitpicking the fine point, so you win. Doesn't change the fact that if you use a deck to capture 9 out of 10 times it won't work. I'm done.

So to you the difference between "does not exist" and "you should not count on finding a compatible deck" is a fine point? "No one has ever been to the Moon" because "one should not count on going to the Moon"? Right.

Yes a deck exists that will read Canon 24F, whohoo, you win. But that doesn't change the fact that unless you're one of the few big broadcast company/post house that actually owns one of those deck, it's not a realistic option for you. Most of the models that ARE readily available won't work, and that was the intent of the original post.
And this is how you should have phrased it at the first place.

sorry to bring this back up, but i was curious. i was under the impression that the M35u could only play canon 24f back through hd-sdi but not through firewire at all. this was info i got from a post on another message board and seconded from a local transfer house.

You are lumping two things into one: playback and output. It plays it back. As to output, I don't know. Sony and Canon camcorders output native progressive over Firewire, but do 2-3 pulldown over HD-SDI. This is opposite to what you've been told about this deck.

Disclaimer: I don't own this deck, neither the Canon camcorder. I just googled long enough to gather this information.

sorry, i guess i misunderstood. i assumed you needed some kind of output to be able to capture.

what i was told about this deck is that if you put a tape in and connect the deck to an hd-sdi input, you wlll see a picture when the play button is pressed.

if you connect if via firewire to an nle for a capture, it will not work.

but that's just what i was told.

FYI, I'm pretty sure the HV20 does not convert 30f, as 30f (or 30p) was introduced on the HV30. Correct? I was going to pick up a hv20 as a deck, but opted not to because of this.

HV30 records 30PsF, it does not record 30F in camera mode. Both the HV20 and the HV30 play back and record 30F in tape deck mode.

My HV20 captures 24f stuff shot with the XHA1 perfectly. I actually much prefer it to capturing from the A1, not just because it saves wear on the heads, but also because the A1 has always been really finicky about capturing with FCP. My HV20 never complains ;)
