Canon T2i Owners = Where's the footage, where's the beef?????

Pass the ketchup please. I don't know man. I finally got lots of clips from a T2i and my iMovie 6 HD version 6.0.4 on my superfast Mac edited them with trans, effects and anything I threw at it and no problemo. I did the same thing in FCP without any issues. FCP does take in .mov files without any problems, at least not any that I'm awrare of. Anyway, let me finish my Steak.

I'm not a wedding shooter, although my wife says I should be to pay for the gear, lol. I've shot a few over the years, enough to know that a vdslr would be completely inappropriate as a primary camera on a on man shoot. I've seen the clips of those high end wedding films, and they are beautiful, but they have an operator on each camera and deliver a well edited montage edit and charge accordingly. They are not in the business of giving the bride 12 hours of raw footage from three angles, they are producing a film that delivers the essence and feel of the day, something that will actually be watched on anniversaries for years to come. If I were to get into it, that is what I would like to produce. For this type of production you are just getting shots for an edit, you don't need to capture 100% of everything.

You have to define your market and what your skill set allows. There are a lot of guys that go out with 2 or 3 cameras, buy themselves, and do a simple switcher style edit in real time of the ceremony and reception events. For the most part this is what the market wants, and they usually don't want to pay more than $1000 for it. For that kind of money you don't owe your client fancy, if they want fancy they need to pay for it.

To the guy that claims to do 70 weddings a year, and I don't know how that's possible as there are only 52 Saturdays in a year. I don't mean to be insulting but you must be doing the quick and cheap wham bam here's your dvd mam type. At that kind of volume you own your market, and don't need to upgrade. If you can charge an appropriate price for hd shooting and blu-ray delivery why don't you just move up to sony ex-1. You get solid state and long run times in a ready to edit format. A dslr might get some nice b-roll, but only if you have a dedicated operator and your main angles are already covered.

Last year I finished off with 83 weddings at an average price of $1200 each. How did I shoot over 80 weddings ? simple. Here in NY and NJ area we do have weddings on Fridays and Sundays. As a matter of fact out of all those 83 weddings, I shot 21 on fridays and 37 on Sundays. That's just the ones I shot myself not counting the other 22 of them that I hired videographers to do. So I really had 105 weddings. Now I do not give my customers a Hollywood production like I have done in the past for around 3 grand. No, I give them what they can afford and they get what they pay for. It takes me 5 to 7 hours to FULLY edit each one after the raw footage is dumped on the HD's. I really edit in camera as I know what I want. The Entire Ceremony is Videotaped without any breaks at all, and given to the customer that way on a separate DVD as unedited RAW. I just add 3 or 4 songs during the bridal prep, outdoor scenes, cocktail hour and 1 song for that quick 4 minute recap. I don't go crazy like I used to, don't add baby or honeymoon pics at all. Sweet and simple. I don't spend all my profits on expensive gear anymore. I get the job done for as little effort on my part and give their money's worth. They are very happy and always recommend others .

prores files are larger than h264 because very frame is an i frame (a real frame).

in 24p, h264 only has two i frames per second, the other 22 are B & P frames

see my earlier post
Actually you can edit h264 on h264 FCP timelines so long as you do straight cuts, but even then I don't recommend it, its lazy and amateur.

Try doing cross fades or any temporal effect (ie covering several frames) and you are playing with fire. Even if you are lucky and they render out ok, any future conversions like if u upload to vimeo, all the errors come out.

In 24p h264 only has two real frames of data per second. The other 22 frames are text data that describe how groups of pictures are moved around from the last real frame. So in order for FCP to display frame 5, it must go back to frame 1 and calculate frames 2,3 and 4.

h264 is a great delivery codec but a poor choice for an editing codec. Do it at your own risk.

edit: anyone want beef with me over my saying the B and P frames are text data my source on that is FCP guru Larry Jordan.

Less compression, wouldn't the original file that is NOT compressed be a larger file?

The original file IS compressed. Just like how straight from camera jpegs are also compressed. Not everything straight from the camera is uncompressed. The files coming off the camera are compressed using H.264 compression.

So by taking the .mov file and converting it to Pro Res means it's less compressed? When taking photos you can choose Jpeg or Raw but if you convert a Jpeg file to Raw yes it will be larger but it is not a true Raw because you took it from a Jpeg.

So how can a .mov file be better converted if it was a .mov to begin with, wouldn't there need to be some form of uncompress file from the camera for it to truly be the best resolution? Thank you for the response in advance as I am only trying to learn and do things the correct way.

.mov is the container just like .avi

h264, h263, prores, proresHQ, motion jpeg, jpeg200, animation etc are codecs

a .mov can contain media encoded in any number of codecs

FYI codec stands for compressor/decompressor

Thank you for explaining, I never knew too much about video but I am learning. So do you convert in FInal Cut or with another program like Jd Interlacer?

You've almost got it. Yes, the Prores conversion will add extra bloat to your footage but it won't make the footage look any better. So why do it? Well, Prores is a faster codec so your editor will be able to scrub it and read it at a much faster speed than the original out of camera file. Sure, you don't have to do this but people prefer to have the speed at the cost of larger files.

For converting the h.264 files from the Canon HDSLRs to ProRes I use Compressor.

+1

there is a whole bunch of t2i threads in dslr general equipment that went there before the 7D forum was renamed!

BTW - hi Ben B !
