Note - the Pro Res files are much larger than the originals, however it is a good idea to keep the originals regardless.
Why would Pro Res be larger than the original files?

Less compression. Think of converting a jpeg to a compressed tiff.
Actually you can edit h264 on h264 FCP timelines so long as you do straight cuts, but even then I don't recommend it, its lazy and amateur.
Try doing cross fades or any temporal effect (ie covering several frames) and you are playing with fire. Even if you are lucky and they render out ok, any future conversions like if u upload to vimeo, all the errors come out.
In 24p h264 only has two real frames of data per second. The other 22 frames are text data that describe how groups of pictures are moved around from the last real frame. So in order for FCP to display frame 5, it must go back to frame 1 and calculate frames 2,3 and 4.
h264 is a great delivery codec but a poor choice for an editing codec. Do it at your own risk.
edit: anyone want beef with me over my saying the B and P frames are text data my source on that is FCP guru Larry Jordan.
Less compression, wouldn't the original file that is NOT compressed be a larger file?
The original file IS compressed. Just like how straight from camera jpegs are also compressed. Not everything straight from the camera is uncompressed. The files coming off the camera are compressed using H.264 compression.
So by taking the .mov file and converting it to Pro Res means it's less compressed? When taking photos you can choose Jpeg or Raw but if you convert a Jpeg file to Raw yes it will be larger but it is not a true Raw because you took it from a Jpeg.
So how can a .mov file be better converted if it was a .mov to begin with, wouldn't there need to be some form of uncompress file from the camera for it to truly be the best resolution? Thank you for the response in advance as I am only trying to learn and do things the correct way.
.mov is the container just like .avi
h264, h263, prores, proresHQ, motion jpeg, jpeg200, animation etc are codecs
a .mov can contain media encoded in any number of codecs
FYI codec stands for compressor/decompressor

Thank you for explaining, I never knew too much about video but I am learning. So do you convert in FInal Cut or with another program like Jd Interlacer?
Admin, request that this be moved to the Canon 7D/550d/T2i forum. Does not belong in general equipment discussion.
Are you asking if our forum allows you to block certain posters so you don't have to see their posts? If so, the answer is yes, you can select the option to "ignore" certain users.Barry,
Is there an "ignore" feature?
