Canon T1i with 1080p announcement today

Ahhh....so THAT's your game plan
i think you've noticed that i don't argue with everyone all the time, but always with whoever makes broad statements that it doesn't seem like they can back up. just stating a different opinion rarely helps much. :-)

(sorry to hijack the thread, the world might not (always) revolve around me after all)

Did anyone download the sample movies? It's pretty disapointing. I personally would not mind using it at 720P, that is what i have been using with my hvx for the last 2 years, but the image would have to be better then that.
I read in some forums that the manual control and 24fps were supposed to be standard options on the 5d but that they rushed it to the market and planned to release a firmware later on. That would explain the difference in the white paper and the actual product.
But seeing this new model with 20fps??????.....i believe it is done on purpose and i don't expect to see any firmware update anytime.

What I want to know is, why not just keep it 720p and give the option to do either 30fps or 24fps? They would still be protecting their video cameras and the 5D mk2 this way, because let's face it, not everyone wants to or can afford to throw down $3,000 on the mk2 unless they can replace their existing camera with it. If you do freelance or pro work then you need to still have a dedicated video camera.

I guess 1080p looks better to the average consumer than 720 24p just like when stores always try to convince people that a 1080p HDTV is automatically better than a 720p one on resolution specs alone.

nah, I'm not trying to come off that way...I think it's mattias's fault really. But what I'm trying to point out is that you like the dof on the d90, but yet, the gh1 has "almost" exactly the same dof. That's all. You can't say that the d90's lens selection is better than the gh1 when their crop factors are insignificantly different. that's it. So your 28mm lens on the d90, would be a 42mm the gh1 a 56mm. So your wides on the d90 aren't any better. A 20mm on the gh1 would be a 28mm on the d90..see what I'm saying? I secretly work for Panasonic too.

For sure, for me neither one is a viable option. Need me full frame sensor so my wides stay wide, etc.. Thats why i may just have to wait for the scarlet to come out :( Bah, was hoping to avoid spending 10 grand.

I'm thinking this is how it will go down eventually. Canon will do one of two things:

1. Release a 60D with manual controls and 24p. After that they will finally release the fabled firmware upgrade to the 5D mk2.

2. They will cripple the 60D's video mode just like they've done so far, and will not release a firmware upgrade for the mk2. Basically a huge F.U. to everyone.

Either way, their first dedicated EOS mount/APS-C or Full Frame HD video camera will be something along the lines of an XL-H1 and will probably cost more than the S35 Scarlet brain. This will only be released to counter whatever Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, and Red have already done by that point. All this is years away as well. I don't even dare dream of an XH-A1 type of model with these features.

i believe panasonic is going to be the answer to a lot of what we're looking for. the gh1 is just the first step. they saw the demand and listened, reason why they waited to add, instead of just put, video on the gh1. they seem to actually interact with everyday users such as, I think her name is Jan, on this exact forum. Same can be said for Red too. but red is missing by releasing products for indies that aren't really indie filmmakers. the scarlet is nice, great probably, but really it's just way out of most, some, filmmakers budget. not including the editing bay to accompany their gear. nikon will probably still suck cause they're going to listen to their photographers more than anyone and more than half will say dump the video and stick making camera's for taking pictures.

But Matt doesn't get enough vitamin D. What's your excuse you live in Florida?

The T1i really is a rebel without a cause but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The punters will now expect HD video as a standard feature on DSLRs so every company is going to have to up their game so we will get what we want sometime in the near future.

I think the GH1 will probably be acceptable for my first feature. The D90 bitrate is just not high enough and I really don't want to put in all the effort of weeks of shooting, getting the lighting just right etc to have the D90 compress the fook out of my work. I'm putting some more cash into getting the fastest/widest nikon glass available to compensate for the smaller sensor/2x crop factor. The only question mark is the GH1's low light ability. Hopefully Nikon will get it right with the D400 and eventually a full frame D800.

I suspect canon may be working on a $5000 range video camera with a DSLR sensor but they can go screw themselves because I know I can make the GH1 film look just as good.

rent, rent, rent, your lens...rhymed unintentionally. but yeah, i'm bitter and angry at everyone cause you have no idea what it's like living with retired old people everyday, who can't drive. sorry, i'm calm now. i'm relaxed.

a quote from simon on the pro lost thread-

"I read somewhere that it can do 24fps. You shoot a scene at 30, then shoot it again at 20, then you send the camera to a man in the Ozarks who performs a ritual. The footage you get back is a 100x100 thumbnail gif that runs at 24."

"Seriously, I don't see what everyone is upset about."

I think the bitrate will be seriously compromised too. From what I can see it has manual ISO control but no manual shutter. Granted it is just a toy camera, but there are the good toys you play with and the **** toys that go to the op shop.

lmao!

try living with 2 baby girls and one big girl......it's like running a netball team

screw renting.....after 10 days rental you could own the thing. plus they are going up in value faster than gold.....in a couple of years I can sell my nikon glass and buy a house. Or just move to the states now and buy a house for $50.

squig your nikon glass analogy is fairly accurate. I always notice that when the economy heats up people stupidly pay new prices for used glass. But when times are as bad as this, the price of the Nikon 105mm F2.5 remains stubbornly high for a good AI or AIS sample. Lucky I already own the lens. As good as gold?... well, at least a lot more useful.

"Rebel without a cause." Now that has to stick!

Yes I would agree. Relevant levity- that's not quite on Lee Wilsons level, but i wouldn't say it was 'cheesy' either. I pun the same way.
All of the energy, vehemence, kind of quest for knowledge feeling this board has makes me feel good. I look at my D90 and tell'im he's not really all that bad, that some brains ACTUALLY only shoot 20p, "you have a good little brain - NOW GIVE ME MY F*CKING SHOT"

Thanks to all the Vikings, Floridians, bicycle enthusiastic MK2 Trojans, and Australian netball team coaches for making my morning interesting.

Sticking an old Canon f0.95 on there should go some of the way.

Are you talking about the D90 ?

how the hell do you keep a 0.95 in focus.....I have enough trouble with my 1.4......and I'm about to take on the challenge of a 1.2. Do any film camera lenses open up to 0.95?

"not quite on Lee Wilsons level" Ahh c'mon mate that's a bit rough, I would have been a standup comedian if it wasn't for the polio.

I think we can put an end to this thread or merge it with lee's 20p thread for the freaks. The canon is clearly a worthless piece of shite for filmmaking. but it was an amusing discussion.
