Canon T1i with 1080p announcement today

1080p20? Finally canon delivers a real camera, one that will finally satisfy Charlie Chaplin.

Really. The phrase 'terminally stupid' springs to mind. If this is really the case, it sounds perverse, to say the least. It's using h.264, which seems to allow up to 30fps at level 4, so I can't help wondering if this is a quick hack away (especially considering past progress in this area). I'm still not sure it couldn't be a mistake - press releases are written by marketing droids, not thinking beings.

http://i.gizmodo.com/5182772/canon-rebel-t1i-hands+on-50ds-sensor-1080p-vids-899- has a hands on, with footage, and say they can see the jerkiness of the low frame rate, but they don't know their asses from their elbows when it comes to video and just think higher is better. so it could be 24p and they wouldn't know the difference. Does look pretty though.

Maybe 20 fps is the new 24fps! This dudes are losing their brain cells at a faster rate than previously thought. What was Super 8 frame rate? 18 FPS? Maybe is the new and improved Super 8. Geeezzz...

if it is indeed 20p it is a perfect example of what greed, $, and fear can do. instead of doing what's necessary (and oh they know what is), they actually break things even more.

very disrespectful tactics from cannon

Movie mode comes to the T1i with quite similar capabilities to the Canon 5D Mark II, though it's highest complete HD resolution is 720p at 30fps. It can capture 1080p videos, but only at 20fps, which isn't technically fully up to spec. Standard 640x480 movies are also available at 30fps. You can manually focus or autofocus via contrast detect by pressing the rear AE/AF-Lock button.

The enthusiast videographer will enjoy the Canon T1i's Movie mode, but there are some shortcomings for them as well. One is that they can't control shutter speed, aperture, or ISO, nor can they know what the camera is setting. Most camcorder users don't expect to be able to select fast or slow shutter speeds, except perhaps a sports mode, but from a camera where you can set both aperture and shutter speed for stills you can be forgiven for expecting a little more control in Movie mode. Many 5D Mark II users have learned to trick the camera by locking the exposure, but it's unclear how to achieve this with the Rebel T1i, at least in the Beta version we tested.

Does anyone know if you can dial the 720p mode down to 24 fps? That would be good enough for me. I also wonder what the odds of someone hacking the firmware are to squeeze a full 24 fps out of the 1080 mode.

A lot of point and shoots have a low quality recording mode that shoots 20fps. I love my hv20, but with the afterthought update of the xha1, the lack of manual anything on the 5dm2, the should-have-been-the-new-gl2 hfs10, and now this 20fps garbage, i'm starting to dislike canon and it's purposefully self-crippling tactics. all i can hope is that the the reason the xha1s was such a lame update and these are all so crippled is because of something big coming around the corner...but probably not

Poor Canon keeps making poopie in their pants. Could someone tell them to Wipe down, not up.

Come on Nikon, Don't let us down.

OMG that is horrible video. This is no typical convention video mistake. Imaging resource is better than average at their skills to pull off a simple test. So it's no mistakes here; The camera's video mode is crap. Taking a 720P image off a 15mp cmos couldn't look worse. Canon sucks! They so did this crippling on purpose.

I would suggest that the canon marketing department follow an old japanese tradition and commit suicide but I won't because after a moronic decision like this they might actually do it!

The specs barely mention anything about video, but it does say "all Live View AF features can be used in shooting video" which I assume means manual shutter and ISO control?

I just read sanyo lost something like 1.6 billion.......canon are so stupid they're bound to lose a lot more than that. I would have sold my D90 for 24p and a better codec in a heartbeat. Canon marketing.....the village called they want their idiot back!

If it wasn't so sad for filmmakers it would be really funny.

Well, cross the Digital Rebel off the list. What a travesty. I thought the Xh-A1s was a silly upgrade. Sheesh!!!! And I agree with what others said, this is insulting. Yes, I'm sure that this could deliver good quality video, but why make us jump through so many hoops: no manual control, no 24p, and no mic input. At least they could have given us 24fps at 720p. I could easily live with that since 720p is fine until a truly dedicated Full Frame or APS-C sensor + interchangeable lens mount camcorder comes out. At this rate, I doubt Canon will be the first to deliver it.

At least there's still hope for the GH-1 and hopefully a D400. I'm curious to see what those can do. Although, I have a hunch that Nikon will eff up the D400. I'm starting to suspect that a filmmaker friendly video DSLR is a pipe dream unless you want to jump through all sorts of flaming hoops like a unicycle-riding circus bear with its arse on fire just to shoot anything with any measure of manual control.

If it wasn't so sad for filmmakers it would be really funny.

This is why I'm getting tired of fixating on every new announcement in the hopes that it will be some huge step forward for HD video production and indie filmmaking. To me, this is why the camera is not as big a deal as many should be making it out to be. At this rate, the two choices are to buy an XH-A1/EX1/HPX170/HMC150/etc... or just deal with the quirks of the 5D mk2 and just get on with things. I think that in another year or two then maybe things will be different as well as the Scarlet being out. Bottom line, if you want to tell cinematic stories on a low budget, be prepared to jump through the hoops that the industry forces upon us by protecting the higher end tools by crippling the more affordable ones.

Life is too short. I'm tired of this BS.

Canon clearly want to piss everybody off and go out of business. They can get fooked.... I won't be buying any more products from them period!

To paraphrase Warren Buffet, companies fall into three different categories: 1) Innovation 2) Imitation 3) Idiotization. The blatant crippling of this Canons specs fall in the latter category.
Nikon has no video products to hold them back, but I think their long absence from the video market (yes, Nikon used to make consumer video cameras in the 90's) may hurt their ability to actually deliver. Which means 35mm adapters will still continue to have a place in indie filmmaking until something like the Scarlet RED camera actually delivers.

If I were RED right now, I wouldn't be too scared unless somebody were to come along and makes a dedicated HD camcorder / DSLR hybrid in a filmmaker friendly format... as in a body style and features like an XH-A1, HVX, or EX1. Even then, the codec will probably not be as robust as Redcode and what about variable frame rates besides the obvious 720 60p?

I honestly don't see something like that being developed by anyone real soon, except maybe Panasonic since they seem to be the most innovative and bold when compared to Sony, Canon, and JVC. First they had the DVX, the HVX, then the first pro AVC-HD cam, and recently have made strides to bring AVC-Intra to a lower priced market segment. Plus, with the P2 system, Panasonic already can do variable frame rates and more robust codecs than HDV and AVC-HD. They could implement this micro 4/3 tech for their pro video line.

20fps, a translation.

All the best.

Canon."

Canon are clearly innovative in the idiocy department. I don't know what they're thinking. I for one never had any interest in their video camera's but I would have sold a kidney for a HDSLR with 24p a good codec and a manual shutter.

In times like these you need every sale you can get. Just look what happened to car makers that made cars that nobody wanted....even the one's making cars that people want are struggling.

Panasonic are going to sell a lot of GH1's it appears.
