Thinking about that daft frame rate, I wonder if it's simply as dumb as:
Entry-level DSLRs have a lower (Stll) frame rate than enthusiast and Pro DSLRs.
The 500D is an entry-ish level DSLR
Therefore the thinking is...lower frame rate in video as well.
Yes dumb, dumb, DUMB, but just dumb enough to be possible, I know it's not as sexy as paranoid conspiracy theories, but reality is dumb and boring, sorry an' all.
Remember even the 5DII wasn't designed as a DSMC, the video was a quick an' dirty fix for PJs, and trditionally video in still cams has been seen as a novelty item in "Cheap Jewelry" idiot compacts rather than as a film-making tool. The fact that the 5DII as turned out as well as it has for cine is serendipity, no more.
I don't think we should hold out too much for a truly usefull 50DII or a 5DIII for cine, it just isn't in Canon's game plan for the stills market.
I hope I'm wrong and we do get a cine-useful 5DII at reasonable money, but the pessemist in me says otherwise.
