Canon Rebel T2i

Otherwise, Canon can take them away without worrying about the competition stealing sales.

True. And for that we all have to thank Nikon with the lowly D90...for opening Pandora's Box. Canon ramped up their deploy of the 5d Mark II when the D90 launched. (They already had plans...but they seemed to actually listen when their community asked for Manual settings in video)

I will also say that I don't think there is "any going back". A hobbiest film maker only need to experience ONE TIME...the joy of buying a 35.00 lens on Ebay from the 1950's that TOTALLY ROCKS....and it's over....they can NEVER go back to fixed lens hell. I know that I can't. Can you?

@HHL
I don't disagree that we're getting the same great video at different price points, but it is in fact a tacked on feature which has a lower ceiling to it. I can't imagine Canon doing a whole lot more than what they currently have in the 7D and T2i. Do they have reason to?

We're not going to see these cameras coming with powered variable speed zoom controls, XLR jacks or many of the other features dedicated video/cinema cameras come with. This is where we hit the ceiling and this is where you get what you pay for; features most consumers don't need but pros want.

Once pro video cameras get the chip sizes that DSLRs have that's when the price differences will begin to make sense again.

Why on earth would Any DSLR manufacturer put xlr inputs or powerd zooms on a Stills cam?
These aren't video cams, they are stills DSLRs that happen to record video.

I don't even think now we'll see better codecs or even less moire / artifacting since it isn't important to the target market, who by and large regard the video functionality as a frivolous distraction not a core atribute.

OK, so where do I go and buy a video camera that does HD 1080p with ONE nice large sensor, not those prosumer 1/3 triple ccd ones . How many pixels do them prosumer video cams have anyway ?. I like to see the real difference in video quality in low light levels and the degree of sharpness and color contrast/saturation. I never autofocus anything and would manually iris also. Control is the key word. Hollywood Panavision, Mitchell, Arri, even Beaulieu and Bolex 16mm didn.t have autofocus, and most film makers prefer it that way. For under a grand, and the possibility to adapt practically any lens to it, old and new, it's a steal.

^I don't think anyone is arguing the price point. These cams ARE a great value for what you get. But It's what you don't and will not get that you have to work around. Why anyone would think Canon is going to stick XLR's on a still camera is beyond me. We got a great cam and at great price, knew the pitfalls and still want more. If you read through the DSLR threads you will see the same things over and over and over.

Or as I like to call it:

Good or bad, I'm getting one. DSLR kit under a grand, I can play around with this and also we'll have a nice little camera to shoot family photos. I just hope Costco gets them in stock, although I'm sure the price will be exactly the same at B&H/Amazon.

What's the word on availability? Will there be enough at launch for the preorders or will it be another GH1 situation? I have a shoot in May that these will be perfect for.

I'm banking on e-p3

Can still use GH1 lenses and would have built in IS and the e-p2 already has full manual controls...just need to add the 1080 part

That's what I love about writing -- it DOES cost next to nothing! :)

Yet, you know what's the best about it -- we have one guy here who's had an actual success selling to Hollywood, Kyle. Sold his screenplay for something around $300,000. No camera, no hassles, just sitting in his living room typing on the same kind of computer that we all spend all our time typing DVXUser posts to flame about which SLR is better... Kyle just sat down and banged out a script and sold it for enough dough that he could buy a house for cash.

Actually, I think it was 600 against 300, so he stands to get another shitload if it gets made.

But most step deals--Dingos mentioned "600 against 300"--are structured with a *sole* credit bonus (if/when the movie gets made), not a "story by" credit bonus. Sorry, I should have been more precise in my previous post, but I didn't want to hijack a hardware thread with screenwriting esoterica.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled T2i discussion - Mark
