Canon's compact mirrorless cameras' specs have just been leaked:
- Video is 1920×1080 30p/25p/24p, 1280×720 60p/50p, 640×480 30p/25p
Method – video compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, audio Linear PCM, MOV format

Check out the leaked specs here: http://www.canonwatch.com/rumor-eos-m-full-specifications-leaked/

Sure, it´s a small compact camera that will probably compete with the likes of the NEX5N, but this is just the first camera. I´m sure there will be more with pro and semi-pro features.
Lets at least hope for high bit rate and full manual control on this one. A mic input would be nice too, but I don´t really see it. Canon will be very careful with this...they don´t want to canibalize their current DSLRs...

Bringing forth a mirrorless body and a line of more video capable lenses bodes well for the possibility of consumer/prosumer large chip camcorder bodies, that are significantly cheaper than the current 'cinema eos' line. Don't forget that canon has a history of offering similar specs at lower price points for different market segments. An eos adapter will assure compatiblilty with high end L glass, if you want it, and I'm sure third parties will be quick to produce manual adapters for other things.

Lets hope christmas brings a camcoder option that shook things up the way the HV20 did. Sony obviously has little interest in that segment.

It looks like the T4i sensor, processor, LCD, and features in a body about 1/2 the width, depth, and weight.

The 22 mm is a 2.0 STM lens (silent video focusing.) If we are lucky, the quality will be similar to the 40 mm pancake, which is steller!

Interesting. Hopefully 2-3 more cameras from Canon later this year, including a higher end mirror less, and a lower end full frame (if we are lucky, with a strong video feature set.)

Here is the first video sample with a bunch of Canon adapted lenses

Full specs are out. They have a mic input, and manual control over video AND audio. It has nice feature like selecting the point of interest via touchscreen while filming. The AF is contrast based, so I don´t expect a mind blowing performance. It would have been nice if they had added a tiltable lcd screen (It does output video via HDMI while filming though) and more physical controls.
Lets hope they release an avanced version.

Nice little video demo. I wonder if this will give the GH2 a run for its money.. My main curiosity is how fast the little computer in there is refreshing those lines... If Canon can remove skew (or dramatically minimize it) then they would have a major contender.

Conversation with my wife a few minutes ago (just woke up)...

Wife - "LOOK!!" (hands me phone w/article pulled up)
Me - "OK, so Canon is finally releasing a mirrorless camera?"
Wife - "Yeah, I'm rooting for it!"
Me - "Why?"
Wife - "Because its Canon."

I root for the right tools for the right people, but she wants so desperately for Canon to put my little army of GH2s to shame!

From what I´ve been reading this is basically a T4i inside a compact body and with a different mount. I don´t see it as a game changer...unless someone is able to hack it.
I was kind of surprised with the us$800 price tag. For this price you can get the NEX5N with both lenses or several different micro 4/3 combos with better lenses.

I don't think it will compete in GH2's market share, much less the E-M5 or any of the more 'high-end' mirrorless cameras. It will compete for the GF and EP series, though, and also the Nikon 1 system. It'll be interesting to see how it fairs in the market. Price wise it's up against the Sony NEX offerings, which have a few more included features, but Canon may have the edge in intuitive interface and simplicity of use (which is definitely where they seem to be focusing the advertising strategy). A lot of video people are bemoaning the fact that it doesn't have 1080p60, but I don't think the typical consumer puts much weight into that feature. For the target market they're going for, as long as it has a video function, that's all they care about. I'd say the primary target here is great images with the least amount of hassle; ease of use is the name of the game in this particular segment of the market. I'm sure a higher-end mirrorless will come down the pipeline soon that's more geared to advanced enthusiasts.

At any rate, I'd definitely be interested in trying one. The sample image from the 22mm lens looks very nice: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eosm/downloads/01.jpg

Personally, I'm still holding out for the rumored lower-priced full frame SLR.

I'd love to see a camcorder like the g10, xa10 with this lens mount. I'm interested in the progression but not the current offering. We'll see how it plays out. I'm sure there will be third party adapters soon enough. Canon can be quite aggressive with seasonal promotions and what not. See how a package looks in the fall, and it may be an interesting option. It would allow for the use of lenses not easily adapted to EF, as well as a platform for acquiring EF lenses for use with the BlackMagic. I'm not going to argue that that GH2, and likely GH3 will have superior video quality, but there is the practical issue that everyone I know shoots canon, so lots of lenses available.

I think it looks like a fantastic little camera. I don't care what all the photogs are saying about it. It's basically a 650D that can fit in a small bag. A perfect little travel/walk around camera for a day at a festival or out in a park. I like that you can adapt EF lenses to it with full control. I like that they didn't seem to cripple the video functionality compared to the 650D. Even though that wasn't incredible to begin with. I also like the look of the camera and don't understand why some people think is looks ugly. Much nicer looking than the NEX cameras IMO. I also like the shorter flange to focal distance and all the great adapters it will enable.

It also seems to me that Blackmagic now has a new mount to move to while keeping with the Canon system. If they can legally that is.

I'm already a m4/3 shooter. But I only have a single native m4/3 lens. The rest is adapted minolta/nikon glass. I may just switch from m4/3 to to this system in the next year depending on what else Canon offers in terms of bodies for the M system. I've always liked Canon color and I like the larger chip. I haven't been thrilled with IQ from the m4/3 cameras when it comes to stills. But with this being a smaller 650D and allowing vintage glass, that's enough to perhaps push me its way.

Agreed 100%.

I have a T4i/650D and pre-ordered one of theese immediately last night.

For photos, the T4i will obviously be teh betterchoice with it's 60D auto focus.

For video, this little beast is like having the 650D at 1/2 the height, depth, and weight. I am very happy.

I am downsizing my 14 lens Canon kit not taht I have clsoed my studio. Goingto more consumer/prosumer mix. This is what I plan on keeping:

24 2.8, 40 mm 2.8 STM, 85 1.8

18-135 STM, 24-70 2.8 L, 70-200 4.0 L

If that little 22 mm is anywhere like the quality of the 40 mm, I will sell my 24 mm 2.8 and keep the 22 mm STM instead.

As a long time Canon user (since the F1N film camera), I am very happy with the touch screen, auto focus in video, face and object tracking (select a stationary object, it satys in focus as you recompose) and overall controls on the T4i/EOS M.

I still may pickk up a NEX-5N or a GH2 to play with until October, just to broaden my learning. I have had at least 30 non-Canon cameras in larger formats: Pentax 645N, Mamiya 645AF, Mamiya 7II, 4x5, etc. But no other digital or 35 mm cameras.

I am happy! We have great tools available today,. They only keep getting better.

Still looking forward to things like C Log, 12 bit, and better offloading/downsampling on the mid tier Canons when they finally tricklt down ... maybe next year, or the year after. The downsampling they could do now!

This is an interesting bit on the intended market for thecamera:

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/ca...gital-slrs-hybrids/canon-eos-m-1089580/review

According to CanonUK's David Parry, Canon is aiming the EOSM at a new market – people who want toget a bit more from a camera than a compact model can offer them, without thecomplication or bulk of a DSLR. It's for people who want to take better pictures, but who don't necessarily consider themselves photographers or want to become photographers............

Appearance-wise theCanon EOS M is like one of Canon's Powershot mid-range compact cameras with abigger than usual lens. It doesn't have the same number of button and dialcontrols as the top-end Canon G1-X and Canon G12 because it's designed to beunintimidating to novice photographers.
Thanks to its magnesium alloy and stainless steel shell the Malso has a solid, high quality feel

first i've got to say...i've got some canon L glass i'd love to use on a mirrorless...but this ain't it ! canon continues to throw the ball off court to buy time while sony and panasonic are shooting baskets - no 1980/60p, no evf, no peaking ...but it'll give some of those ep olympus's a good run ....since they're down to about 350 a pop !

I guess canon faced the music and saw the gh3 and nex 7 as unbeatable so didn't even try . who would really chose this camera over a nex5n ...at $200 cheaper ?? Or for that matter a gh2 ?? ...sad day for canon ...shows how they're even slower to innovation than we thought !

They're actually doing a solid job of zeroing in on that target group with their marketing, because that's exactly the impression I got from the the videos they've released today. I think they'll likely do rather well in that niche with their strategy.

I guess canon faced the music and saw the gh3 and nex 7 as unbeatable so didn't even try

More likely they saw an under-served market and targeted that.

I have some concerns, will this Canon have mic input if so with out AG, will it be able to record over 11min's, will it have full hdmi output, have they sorted out the overheating, moire issues, price and last when will canon give 1920x1080 60p/50p.

Canon will be very careful with this...they don´t want to canibalize their current DSLRs...

This would be a business strategy that I don't understand. Better that Canon do it themselves than someone else, no? Why would Canon favor one form factor over another so long as they make both?

This is a video-fanatics forum. This brought no improvement in video mode same quality since 5y ago, which doors got opened exactly?

I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no logic to your statement.

1. Record times are way up = improvement
2. Digic 5 processor = improvement
3. About 1/3rd the size of previous canon cams used for video = improvement
4. Autofocus while shooting video = improvement

And 5, we don't know yet how much an improvement over image quality, rolling shutter, and moire we're looking at, but I'll bet there's at least incremental improvements.

To me, anything that Canon brings up with the same aliasing/moire issues of its old generation is absolutely irrelevant... We need to see if this camera has any improvements in this area, but looking at the T4i I'd guess it's another big miss.

From what I´ve read it uses the T4I sensor, but I wouldn´t jump to conclusions as this is a new system. Initial reports say that AF is very acceptable although not on par with the best mirrorless systems. We don´t know what other changes Canon has made...
