Canon Eos One 4K video camera - and Jackie Chan

Seems interesting and probably has its uses, but lets be honest, this is not the camera most of us are looking for from Canon. At least based on things everyone has said. What we really seem to want is a 70D that shoots 4K with a 4:2:2 option, a log mode, 13+ stops dynamic range and no extreme moire/aliasing or rolling shutter. But either Canon doesn't want to deliver us that product or they can't.
5D MK IV (or 5D C, as it may be named) should be announced by fall. Canon will have a traveling Canon Expo around that time and might use the opportunity to make a little splash.

Sony RX10 is an híbrid machine: for stills and vídeo.
Canon One is for motion image.
I think it is a new concept.

Speaking for myself, this is exactly the product I was looking for from Canon.
Based on the rumors I'd heard, Canon would make a small, fixed lens, C100-like 4K camcorder, and that's exactly what they made. I've always liked the form factor of the C100 and this camera has it. It's not a top of the line cinema camera, and it isn't meant to be.

There's plenty of rumors of a new 4K C300-type camera coming soon, perhaps at NAB, if this little camera doesn't meet your needs.

Do we even know if this isn't a stills camera as well? There's not much data to go on yet.
I'd rather have a video-dedicated camera myself. Its closest rival does seem to be the AX100. But don't be surprised if Sony releases a 4K RX10 soon.

biggest let down is the "1 inch" sensor coupled with a slow as beans 5.6 probably by the time you get to 80mm or so.

the 1 inch sensors i see in general like the RX100 III are not strong in low light.

this is going to need light.

i hope I'm wrong as i obviously haven't seen its IQ.

RX 10 has a BSI sensor. FZ 1000 does not. IIRC, that makes for a couple of stops difference.

hi guya, and whats supposedly the difference of this camera vs the 799$ panasonic fz1000, as fz is a 1"sensor too, 4k 25p ?
Backside Illumination makes big difference for these size sensors but the full specs are currently unknown.

Historically, Sony kept the top technology to itself for half a cycle or so before selling it to the competing manufacturers.

For me this camera is getting alot of hate, yes it looks dumb and to be honest Im over Canon really. But for all we know this thing could cost $5000 and do 4K 422 to a CF card in C-Log at 96fps....the lens may not be the best from what we see but it could be L glass inside there to...

What Darren is saying is what your grandmother told you....."If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all"........meaning you could have nicely said " for my work, a fixed zoom won't work for me"....
To much trash is getting thrown around here when DISCUSSING cameras so why don't we all agree to be a little more civil here on DVXuser.

I don't think that's what Darren was saying at all...

Jim, you spoke with respect, which Darren did not do, so I'll actually clarify my point. What I said was slightly dismissive of a camera, not a person, and I got an aggressive response. I didn't attack anyone's momma; I said "no thanks" to a dealbreaking aspect of a camera made by a company that none of us work for.

I'd argue that saying "no thanks" *is* civil, and the response was not.

So the thread doesn't get derailed, I'll also say that I hope Canon have a 4k interchangeable lens camera at NAB like the rumored C300 mkII and a 4k DSLR. That I can get behind.

If I may express my opinion, that is a totally fair point. We have all joined that forum (mainly) to discuss about cameras and I think we have the right as consumers, even to negative critique, in a civil manner ofcourse.
And I dont understand why somebody can express an opinion about a product ONLY after watching footage IF one or more of the aspects of that product dont fit his/her needs!
Now about that specific camera, I can understand that it could be a great crash cam for somebody who is using a C300 or a C500 as an A camera, but for somebody with a low budget, looking to find a good and affordable A camera and use his existing Canon glass on it...its a total let down regardless its final image quality.
As a wedding videographer who is shooting very often on APSC sensor at f1.8 and 3200 iso...I just know that camera with that lens is not for me. Out of curiosity I will follow that new cam in order to understand in what audience Canon is targeting with that release...

I think for me to get this camera, it would have to shoot clean up to 12,500 ISO (to deal with the likely 5.6 lens). It would have to match C100/300 in color science. It would need a robust codec. And it would have to cost less than $2000. For me 1" and fixed lens are big bummers. But I'll keep an open mind until I see something shot with it.

It may be a perfect camera for the sort-of-professional or occassional shooter. I just don't think it adds up to much of a competitor to the GH4.

For all we know this camera might just be a sub $999 vacation shooter. I'm not going to get too worked up over it and won't be placing any orders for it either. BUT, it might be just the thing for the wealthier tech geek who owns a 4k TV and is going on a cruise this spring. That would make sense, wouldn't it?

Understood.....I just get tired of the "absolutes" that people use when making a point...and that is a problem of the anonymity of the internet. Things are posted in a way that if someone was face to face, their statement would probably not be said in the same way.

Now, back to discussing a camera that no ones really knows anything about...in my view, I think this camera is aimed at the drone market...a functioning video camera for your octocopter.....among other uses

The fixed lens really doesn't bother me. I'm used to using XF305s, EX1s, HPX170s, etc. They did the job just fine. And my old 2/3" cameras had a removable zoom, but at the cost of one zoom, it might as well have been permanently mounted. Oh, I've done many shoots with C300s, FS 100/700s and all, but I think I could live with this small, 4K, fixed lens camera. It reminds me of the old Scarlet "3K for $3,000" 2/3" design. One of its designs had a fixed zoom lens. I was hoping that would have made it into production.

The rumors bandied about before put the price of this camera at around $2,500. So far, all the other details from the rumors - 1" sensor, C100 form, 4K, fixed lens - seem to be true.

I agree with you actually. The reason I use my real name (Fahnon Bennett) is because I hate the anonymity of the net. I would actually love it if Canon were to ask me why I said what I said and why I have been personally frustrated as a professional using their gear for the last couple of years. And for the record I would say no thanks to a canon rep directly if I thought I would actually be granted a chance to make my case as to why I would love it if they went in another direction.
Like someone said over on the nofilmschool comments, I love the Canon color science; I just wish they would make a camera that was for me and people like me, which pretty much means a 4k internal CLog 10bit C300 for $5k.

Make that and everyone will buy it.

Everyone.

I don't think your price point is realistic at this time (maybe a year from now). I expect some really cool things at NAB and many of your requests could be answered but I'm not sure about $5K. Canon has a history of delivering very good products that exceed the actual spec sheet. They have done over 3 years of interviews across the board and across the country/world to find out how they can make the C300 better. They do charge a premium but they deliver a premium product that works right out of the box with no operational or esthetic (picture) issues . Sony's FS7 is probably priced about $2K lower than it should be but they built that camera to beat the C300 and it's massive sales and success...but one never knows....take the JVC LS 300 (which are on the way to us for delivery next week) for example. I was on an NDA for a year and a half for the LS and, at the time, was led to believe that it was going to sell for somewhere between $5-6K which is where it belonged based on what was out there at the time. Lo and behold, it shows up for $4K with a free lens or adapter!

A 10x zoom is no good for wildlife which is my main thing, the FZ1000 i have does 1184mm with i zoom, obviously zoomed in at that amount 4K is nowhere as sharp as wide angle but useable,i am prepaired to pay for another top camera /camcorder but there is little if any choice.A zoom lens is a must for me,what lens on the Sony F7 could give reasonable wide and long reach,i hope canon dont leave it too long to enter 4K seriously.
