Also it's smart to consider the delivery format most of us are dealing with. I don't think I fit in that boat. I work in a market dominated by DVD sales, where VOD is basically non-existant still, and Blu-ray has barely even gotten a foothold. I'm in the faith based market where we're always the last to embrace any technology and where not everyone is looking for the latest and greatest viewing tech. Plenty in the market that are a good chunk of the buyers have old TV's still and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon.

These are all things to consider for me and were big points when it came to yay or nay on the Scarlet front. With all that posting in 4k requires (depending on what you have resource wise...for some it's easy) sticking to 1080p given the realm I work in just makes more sense. It's likely that no matter where technology goes in the next number of years that I could keep my AF100 and shoot every single film I do in the next 5 years on it without any problems on my delivery/distribution end. If VOD explodes in my market then that'll be especially true.

Well even if you consider the price of the camera in Europe and conversion rates of Euro to USD ... the final price is NOT $20,000 USD. We don't know the final USD price yet, but there has been an argument brought up about the fact that many Canon products match dollar for dollar the prices Euro to USD, without a conversion rate applied. The XF300 price in Euros is the same price in USD over here...so it could swing both ways.

It looks like if it's dollar for dollar the camera will end up around $13,000, and if it's NOT dollar for dollar then it's $16,000. Either way, it's NOT $20,000.

I tnink professionally, its important for potential buyers to weigh in the overhead vs profits on this camera (and f3 similar $$$). The 4k scarlet is the same price. Producers have issues seeing past numbers. How will it effect rental rates? And the medium future (2 years). 4k is getting here fast. Standard computers are able to handle it nowadays, nles can handle it, and hell even youtuve is allowing 4k uploads.

If you're going to spend 16k + another 4k on. Sttuff... there's always stuff.... think about it. This isn't a 5k fs100/af100, in tough economic times this is a significant hole to puut your self in. Don't want anyon get in over their heads.

I would've agreed with you a week ago. Now? I'm not so sure. If the camera comes in around 13-16K, I foresee this conversation:

We don't need a 10 Ton Grip Truck. But, if we shoot Scarlet, we probably do.

Then this conversation:

We shoot straight to CF cards and you don't need onboard recorders to get Alexa-like DR.

Don't forget this one, either:

The 1080 looks like 4K downrezzed, only you don't have to go through the extra day and cost of getting it down to 1080.

You and I have worked with enough producers to know that fighting for lighting is an up-mountain battle.

I really did think that, regardless of if the Scarlet wasn't the best image, the 4K number would have people scrambling to use one. Now? Mmmn... nah. K Count doesn't matter in the debate of Epic vs Alexa, we know which camera is better. Only difference is Alexa costs more to buy and rent. Once the C300 images begin hitting from Television Shows, features en-masse, Scarlet won't be the camera of choice. I think the F3 floundered versus RED MX (and of course Epic and Alexa) because it costs too much to get the ultimate quality out of it. Very VERY few people want to use that camera without S-Log and an Onboard recorder. It's worthless to most without it.

C300 has all of that in a tiny package.

If I were going to spend my money on anything, it'd be the C300 today. Coupled with how many people are going to be using the camera, and the "Canon mojo" that everyone loves--"Hey, this is just like the 7D but no moire and much better DR!", this is gonna be the cam that gets paid off fast.

Late January 2012 is the release. If money is an issue for anyone you probably won't be first on the list and if the price drop is real you won't be able to get one until March which if you can hold out till April and NAB will give you an opportunity to see how the first half of the year works out camera wise and what the second half is going to offer. Shoot with what you got.

Oh and in 2012 if Amazon and wal mart have their way the out of state no tax internet savings will be gone so you may have to factor in that cost.

Filmtools is now saying US pricing next week at the earliest, but they also said it would be this week so who knows. A few weeks ago Canon said it would be about a month to get pricing because they're still finalizing contracts with the dealers and rental houses. Only 21 dealers will carry the C300. First cameras will go to the dealers and rental houses. Maybe there will be enough of them around to rent.

$12-13K seems to be the sweet spot, but realistically I think it might come in around $15K. We already know the 12,000 Euro price, but that's without tax. With VAT it's around 14,400 Euro so the $1 = 1 Euro parity rule of them thumb for VAT would put it around $15K USD (speculation only).

If I were going to get into a Scarlet package, I would be purchasing a Samurai to record 1080p from Scarlet's 4k. Gets me around having to buy a bunch of REDMags, no sensor crop issue, and no enormous 4k files. I want 1080p. For me, right now, 4k is a novelty. Perhaps it would be worth it for me to consider paying the premium to have the option to shoot 4k in the future. But, in the present, that means my rig will be huge with the external recorder et al.

one of the 3 more serious pro shops in france:
http://www.videoplusfrance.com/EOS_...UMERIQUE_CAPTEUR_CMOS_SUPER_35_MONT._EF_CANON
official price: 14350€ VAT included.
As it always happened in the past: for almost all the cameras, you just change the sign "€" to "$" to know the price in the US. It works with all of them. Only thing we notice here is xf300 that is 5860€ in france and 6500$ in the US (B&H) -> +10%
So, there is zero chance that the C300 is less than 14000$ in the US. It will for sure be between 14000 and 16000$.

Here in Germany a C300 is 15458 EUR (in the moment) including 19% VAT .

Street prices might be a bit lower.
A new Scarlet goes on German Ebay for between 12900 (Canon mount) and 14200 (PL mount) Euros including VAT.

I have not seen this question asked anywhere, pardon me if this is a repeat...

As soon as I heard that the sensor was capable of 4k, but is outputting 1080p, it had me thinking. Is this camera future proofed for shooting 4k with some add on or firmware upgrade? Is it possible that this camera really IS 4k, but it will be an upgrade?

That would be quite remarkable.

I'll admit, I'm not as excited about a $14,000+ C300 as I am about a <$12,000 one. Two grand is two grand. As the premium for the Scarlet goes down, the more it makes sense for me to consider that investment.

starting price at 12900 on ebay. the price from red uk, shipping and taxes included should be between 13000 & 13500€. and the scarlet will be more expensive in january. i guess 2000-3000€ more.

If I were going to get into a Scarlet package, I would be purchasing a Samurai to record 1080p from Scarlet's 4k.

Not sure this is a viable option, at least not with the current firmware. EPIC users are only using recorders for playback, & instant proxies, due to several image issues.

The C300 sensor has 4K Bayer pattern photosites and theoretically they could debayer the sensor and get an image similar to the RED One. But it wouldn't be true 4K resolution because this is a debayer from 4K photosites. You need to oversample to get true 4K resolution like the way the F65 does it.

If Canon does 4K, they'll do it right by oversampling. The C300 was designed to be an HD camera only and it will likely stay that way.

What is the quality like with the internal DeBayer on the camera? I've heard people say it isn't a full quality deBayer, but I don't know what that means. What do you lose?

This path means you aren't using RAW anymore, but of course I know you know that, and that means you will have either 10-bit 4:2:2 or 8-bit 4:4:4. (Just here for reference, as I understand you are looking at this from having a 4k option in the future, but not using it now.)

What I don't see, and maybe you can post for reference for others considering this, where do you find that crop isn't a concern? I've searched and I don't see anything official from Red about what is happening on the SDI port. Even if the camera takes 5k for 1-12fps and 4k for 1-30fps and makes them both 1080p, there is a crop difference between those. The 5k image will be reduced more to fit in 1080p, but, will contain data from those extra uncropped 1k pixels. Do you see something I've not read that says it can monitor higher than what it can actually record? If so, that would be important for those considering this path.

So, what is it that you mean no sensor crop issues?

You just ruined my day. I knew that the 4k was not 16:9, but I just did some digging on the REDUser.net site and saw that you're right, Atomos acknowledges it doesn't currently work at all. Son of a.

Regardless, I'd rather deal with 4k files in post than pay $14k+ for a C300. That's just me.

In the past, Canon, once they set the price, never lowers it. That held true for the XL-1,GL-1, XL-1s, XL-2,GL-2, XL-H1, XH-G1, XH-A1, XL-H1a, XL-H1s, XH-G1s, & XH-A1s. Even when they DQ'd the units, they didn't lower the price. Once in a while, they did offer a rebate but not often.
