Canon EOS C300 NEW pricing!!!

Love the video review... but the high ISO stuff really doesn't look good. Neither do those stopped down night shots. Looks very video like. But, again, I guess it's not terrible for ISO20k.

Also, shallow DOF at night with bokeh looks great... always will. I don't know why people always need these gimmicks like highISO and now "stopping down" at night to pretend like their footage is somehow more special than others' now. I think the stopping down to f5.6 was a good practical example, but the bridge stuff looked straight-up terrible...

Then remember when the AF-100 came out and people weren't pleased with the higher-ISO performance? There was a whole thread about how obnoxious high ISO shooting is and why "professional" shoots don't need high ISO because they have lighting. Now, all the sudden, since the C300 is pretty lack-luster in the features department... highISO is now the holy grail of performance. There's is just some serious mental gymnastics going on for people to justify this high-priced professional stigma.

Okay, we got it. You aren't buying a C300. It's over-priced and professionals need to watch out.

Now that you've made this same point over four times in this thread (just worded differently) I think it's okay to move on. Let this thread be for those interested in purchasing or are at least considering it.

I do have to laugh about one thing though, a good point is made, people often talk about how high ISO settings aren't used in practice, yet, that's like one of the FIRST things people seem to test on these cameras. Then everyone complains about the high ISO having problems, then people say you aren't going to use that professionally, yet, once again, that's the test people seem to like to see!

:)

The circle, it repeats.

All of the ISO stuff is kind of neat-o. But, I don't recall a time on my 7D where I had the ISO above 1200. I really love the fact that I COULD go to ISO 20k if I needed to, but I see no value in saying that ISO 20k is too noisy. Uh, it's ISO 20k. The fact that it doesn't look like a radioactive snowstorm would be plenty encouraging to me.

That's like saying "Those 20,000 watt home theater speakers hurt my ears they're so loud!"

Uh, turn down the volume.

It's about having total control over what is in focus and out of focus, and how out of focus it will be.

Have fun with your GH2!

Well, it's not my only camera (just used it for my username)... but yea, at the moment, I'm having allot of fun with the 175mb/s all INTRA footage that's clean all the way up to ISO3200. Honestly, it's more gradable than the XF 50mb/s codec (even with it's 4:2:2 colorspace), IMO. It really needs to be seen and worked with in person to be believed. And besides... it's still not really about the camera anymore these days. So it makes sense you just pick the "funnest" one. If you think the C300 is going to add more value to your footage than if you used a 7D, GH2, AF-100, FS100, ect... then you're going to be heading down a long expensive road of disappointment. If, however, the C300 had some form of RAW or 120fps... then yea, it would actually have features that could possible add to the aesthetic value in a major way. But currently, it's just solving problems that most people have been working around anyways, for studios that don't care about price.

Enough.
This thread is becoming derailed and repetitive.

I don't understand how people say that high-iso shots are never used... I need them constantly, even when we rent lights. Maybe it's just because Finland is a dark country but almost everything I shoot tends to be 1250 iso minimum. Unless in daylight. It's just easier to light and you get more natural looking images when you use light sparingly, not blast it everywhere like when shooting film. I had shots that were iso 6400 on the 7d on my last production and this was a car scene that we had huge problems lighting. 6400 was really bad but surprising how much we could salvage from it with neatvideo. The c300 would've been EXCELLENT there.

Don't listen to the naysayers about high ISO. One of benefits modern video has over film is the ability to see in the dark Filmmakers like Michael Mann have used it, in my opinion to beautiful results: yeah, yeah, noisy who cares.

I whole-heartedly disagree, and I'm not the only one:

http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2011/11/09/canon-c300-organic-noise/

Judging noise patterns (or even images) that where taken with an iPhone from a projection is not the best idea.

I downloaded the file and I was not exactly blown away from the noise.

The way it reads out the sensor is very interesting though. As close as you can get to a 3-chip or Foveon on a CMOS camera.
That´s what´s really tempting me, since I´m a skin tone freak.

I got a chance to fiddle with it at the show in DC today. They wouldn't let me run off with any footage-- said it's a pre-release and they're not allowed to let any footage from it out. "$20K MSRP end of January" said the Canon rep. So I'd temper my enthusiasm for the price drop rumors on which this thread is based.

I loved the form factor. EVF and screen are pretty nice. I think the peaking works well and not that an external HD monitor wouldn't be great, but I think you could get by pulling focus just with the peaking in the EVF just fine. Good stuff.

Well at least I contributed something semi-relevant before laying down the smack that was Mr.Astley.

But in all seriousness, screw the high ISO performance. Am I the only one that feels that the highlight roll off truly rivals that of the Alexa. I agree with what some have said about the Sony etc, they all deal with highlights in a similar fashion and to me, it's not that appealing. But in the greatest camera test ever the highlights look incredibly pleasing.

make the cmaera $9K body only... and I will think about it .haha but I really do want to have this camera and film and be awesome and stuff like that with it

Ok Just read phillip bloom is saying he's through various online sources this cam will be going around $13,000 street price. hope this is true. Think it's time to start unloading gear.
