Its unfortunate these threads devolve into Dvxuser cliches like 'its not the camera its the script, lighting, etc.' and that wonderful classic 'go out and shoot instead of posting on a thread' as the irony of that statement hits me in that they've posted on this thread. And the fact that if everybody used every moment of downtime to be productive we would be awash in more and more mediocrity and watered down ideas as well as mentally fatigued.

Someone once wrote that boredom is a great motivator because at some point the person gets so fed up being bored he springs to action.

Mostly this is holiday downtime throw around idea postings from filmmakers and tech geeks who like to contribute knowledge, ideas and beliefs and who. probably without realizing, in their own way are trying to get to some greater personal truth.

I wonder what we would ***** about if the C300 were priced at $6K?

We'd probably be talking about what a great deal a $6k Canon C300 would've been in 2006-7 when all its tech was cutting edge.

How far in advance do you think the feature lists for Canon/Sony/et al's "incremental improvement every three years" releases are 100% planned? 12 years? And how far out is the first one that includes one single piece of tech that isn't readily available right now today? Half that time or more?

THAT is why Red embarassed Canon on November 3rd. Not 'cause Canon gave us another BS codec when it's past time for RAW. Not 'cause I inexplicably need 4K today. 'Cause they made any effort whatsoever. Spent any R&D dollars whatsoever.

Seriously, though, Canon: it's a great camera. Stop joking around and announce the real $3500 price and I'll be first in line.

This is another DVxuser cliche: That the tech is old. They said it about the Af100 and the FS100 and the F3, probably every camera that has come out in the last ten years, and yet here some of us are with those cameras in our possessions and using it for work. If you want it for $3500 (funny that you want it a the same price of a 5D, yet the C300 solves all the 5D's problems: Meaning you want to pay Zero dollars extra for those fixes), I refer you to Barry's post regarding price.

And I seriously believe that Arri and Canon have Red's number and in the coming years I doubt I will ever even think of RED as a choice.

I honestly think, and this is not directed at anyone in particular, that the market this camera is intended for, are not the same folks who are complaining about the price, and definitely not most of the people who frequent this board.

The C300 is made for professionals who will be either renting it or buying and paying for it after a few jobs. Perhaps that level of pro believes it should be a couple of thousand less, but it won't bother them the way it does us.

The reason so many people are upset here is that we want that wonderful film-making tool, but it still isn't in our price range. Many of us are hobbyists/enthusiasts, or shoot corporate, weddings etc. And even if we technically can afford to buy the C300, we cannot justify buying it to shoot corporate video or personal shorts.

If Scarlet kicked Canon's ass so bad, then why not just buy a Scarlet and skip complaining about the C300? Or, why not complain that the Alexa isn't cheaper than Epic? After all, the Epic shoots 5K for half the price!

All you have to do is look at the forum index, and you'll see that the forums that get the most love around here are DSLR, GH2, etc.: microbudget film-making. Usually you'll see well over a hundred viewers in those boards at any one time. Behind that are the cameras that are more useful for corporate, and the hybrids like the AF100.

The reason everyone was so excited and anticipating the Canon announcement is that we knew Scarlet was going to be out of the price range of most of us, and so hoped that Canon would swoop in and save the day for us microbudget guys. But it didn't happen. However, that doesn't mean the C300 "should" be within our price range. Even if it was $8000-$10,000 that would still be out of the justifiable price for the majority of the DVXuser demographic.

So I don't see what all the price fuss is about. I was hoping just as much as anyone else that this would be the Canon version of "3K for 3K". But it wasn't. And further, to my knowledge, Canon never suggested it was going to be!

I don't get all the anger. If the price is $12,000 are we all going to rush out and buy one? I really don't think so!

Here is to hoping we get a new DSLR from Canon in the next 6 months that kills moire and aliasing, shoots for as long as you have card space, and resolves a lot closer to 1080P. That will be more than enough to satisfy most of us, and it really has nothing to do with the pro-grade C300.

I would say the Alexa is drastically over priced. However, it does have better latitude and rolling shutter then the EPIC. Justifies a slightly higher price, but not $20k or so. Really with Arri, you're paying for the Name/Logo on the side of the camera. Then again there is the HDRx on the Epic.

Maybe the Alexa is drastically overpriced. But the point is, the class of professional that shoots with Alexa really doesn't give a darn!

One of the most insightful posts I've read regarding the C300 bashing on this board. Well said, and spot on.

I think canon is long term thinking. they hooked up tons of indies with their dslr. they want to grow with them i'm sure. the c300 is some kind of "look we're coming to hollywood, from now we're legitimate too in that area". the ones making some money with their 5d will buy this "super 5d" to evolve. and next year there will be some less expensive models to fill the gap now that people noticed they are not anymore a still camera company doing videos by mistake. and they will go slowly in the arri area by growing with their customers because they know that for the moment they are not legitimate enough to compete with the big boys. a bit like adobe who offers super discount to students knowing that they are future potential users. they are not in a hurry at all, they make their money on printer, lenses, camcorders, still cameras, .....

Great post. It also seems that the 5D has set and clouded those micro budget peoples expectations on pricing . They seem to keep forgetting that it is a stills camera. Sorry, but I don't hold much hope for 5D MKIII to do what you and many others expect of it.

OMG... When the 5D-MKIII does hit... I am going to try my best to avoid those threads. No matter how good the camera is going to be, for what it is, a hybrid stills camera with video capability, there are going to be a lot of folks disappointed in some or other of the posted specs.

This is exactly what will happen, IMO. They have a whole plan in place already. The lower end DSLR group will be served by the next generation DIGIC V cameras. The 5DMkIII is due and Canon has admitted it's coming. We just don't know when. All the new 5D has to do is not line skip or alias a ton and most people would be happy. Perhaps even the new codec options from the 1Dx would suffice.

There might be a DIGIC V T4i next Feb too. Then Canon will probably attack the AF100/FS100 crowd with a C100, trickling down some of the key technology in the C300. Along the way the 4K C-DSLR will be out within a year or so. All this time they'll be working on a new DSP chip and laying the foundation for an advance camera in 2013 or 2014. That camera could attack the high end with an advance codec (probably not RAW yet) but at least 10 bit and at least 60P, maybe 120P and maybe record 4K.

Well, that's my theory and wishful thinking at least.

The C300 is going to be a beast and you will see shots all over your TV taken with it. If it's too expensive for you, then you're not in the TV or feature film business. If you can't shoot a wedding or a corporate video on a 5D, FS100, Af100, or even a hacked Gh2, then I suggest finding a new career.
Make all the shorts you want. Enter all the film festivals you want. A camera that has 20 stops DR and no moire will get you no closer to the AMC theatre were I pay $10 to watch a movie than a Canon T2i will.

When's the last time you saw an over-exposed, poorly audio recorded, highly compressed film in a cinema? (other than mockumentaries). Distributors care about content after visual. Cameras that have better specs, while they won't shoot a film for you, will certainly make things easier.

+10000000000000000, and that is for every single camera ever released, if you're complaining about the price, the camera is not meant for you to buy.
