I love your quote by the way:

"To me the great hope is... people that normally wouldn't be making movies will make them and suddenly some little fat girl in Ohio will be the new Mozart and will make a beautiful film using her father's camera-corder and the "Professionalism" of movie making will be destroyed forever and it will finally become an art form."
-Francis Ford Coppola.

I think, since we are talking about vague terms, like "lush filmic", it might be interesting to see an old 5DmkII video by Vincent Laforet.

Watch it in HD.

Then watch the 720p version of Mobius, and suddenly the gap of image quality is closed.

Yes. Nobody can argue with that. I also still shoot DSLR and it produces amazing images when lit properly. But that´s exactly where the C300´s features step it up. All we wanted is the look of the 5D without its sensor-problems and in an ergonomic camcorder-housing plus the added bells and whistles like the remote-handle and ISO 16000+(!) and good EVF. If these features save a few days in everyone of your productions (light-wattage, rigging, previewing, fixes in postproduction) then the extra price is actually earned back in a short time.

All this is of course also valid for the F3! The F3 and C300 are simply the evolution - or shall we call it "growing up" - of the DSLR-era.
edit: the AF100 and FS100 are part of that evolution of course.

Thanks, It is from "Hearts of Darkness"; the documentary on the making of "Apocalypse Now".

I don't know about the "Predicts YouTube" part.

I understand Coppola's sentiment, but in no way agree. Making a film is not akin to other art forms, such as writing, scripting, painting, ect. It requires the use of a lot of different, specialized skills: video, lighting, audio, acting, management, ect. That's why there is cost involved, unless he thinks this little fat girl will be able to secure locations, pick appropriate wardrobe, direct the actors, set the lighting, capture the audio, and shoot the video and make an amazing film.

Just because he's Francis Ford Coppola doesn't mean he can't be flat out wrong. Godfather III exsits after all.

For those who wish it had 60p, there is a simple work around that while not totally ideal would be perfectly fine for almost every end use. Shoot 60i with a shutter of 1/120 or 1/250...something like that...and conform to 60p in After Effects. You lose some vertical detail but the image of the C300 is so sharp and detailed to begin with that nobody is likely to tell the difference at all.

There's always a work around. :)

Also, that comment about what we'd whine about if the camera was $6k was spot on. Even if they dropped it below $10k there would be a 6+page thread like this with people whining. We're so spoiled, and if all the time spent arguing and whining here over things you can't change was spent making movies or doing other work, perhaps that C300, Scarlet, or EPIC wouldn't be so far outside your price range? Just a thought...

No one is spoiled. There will always be challenges that require discipline and hard work with every generation. The technology has made some things easier, but let's put things in perspective and realize it isn't the nineties anymore, and high quality affordable HD is more a reality than manufacturers let on. Cell phones are shooting 1080P these days. One phone will play HD wirelessly to a TV and allow the user to talk on the phone at the same time. The T2i is $600, and it has some powerful capabilities that show better HD need not cost many multiple thousands of dollars.

I am very aware that anything I write here will not change Canon's C300, but it will change peoples' minds, which in turn influences camera companies, and that means development on tools we want or need will be developed sooner.

I said majority. And that will not change drastically in the next year.

Here is some screen shots from a 1050P monitor showing how different the viewing experience will be between 1080 and 4K:

But anyways, I am all for better capture media before uploading. I think capturing the best image possible shows through even if the end medium is just the web.

Its unfortunate these threads devolve into Dvxuser cliches like 'its not the camera its the script, lighting, etc.' and that wonderful classic 'go out and shoot instead of posting on a thread' as the irony of that statement hits me in that they've posted on this thread. And the fact that if everybody used every moment of downtime to be productive we would be awash in more and more mediocrity and watered down ideas as well as mentally fatigued.

Someone once wrote that boredom is a great motivator because at some point the person gets so fed up being bored he springs to action.

Mostly this is holiday downtime throw around idea postings from filmmakers and tech geeks who like to contribute knowledge, ideas and beliefs and who. probably without realizing, in their own way are trying to get to some greater personal truth.

Before this thread goes any further, I want to say those were great words.

I never knew about this corridors from vincent lafortt, but that is some sick production done with the canon 5d. If someone told me it was shot with the c300 I wouldn't question it at all. fantastic!!!

i agree with mr coppola

I agree with Coppola - Toland told welles when they were about to do KANE he could teach him all he needs to know about movie making in a weekend. Godard said the greatest cinematographer in the world is KODAK! I just shot a feature in ireland - that i wrote, directed and played the lead in - i set up the camera - took my exposure - told my wife - who was operating - who has never operated before where to pan or tilt, etc. Is the film raw - rough looking - oh you bet it is! Is it watchable? I think so. Did I make it from my heart - pretty sure I did. Will I sell it? Don't know - it's being edited right now. I had a distributor for the last one. Its great that the cameras today are taking it out of the hands of the professionals - sure i want to see films made by professionals - but look at all the garbage they put out to make a buck. Everyone has to make a buck - but Lord - what soul corrupting beautiful photography I have seen in my day because the filmmakers had nothing to say. I will watch a film by some kid filming his grandmother in the kitchen spreading butter and jam on a piece of toast with the windows blown out then most of the *&&^%%$ i see today!

to go back to C300, I would love to see some footage, maybe it's wonderful, but i went on the scarlet road. I understand the issues that bother people about it but these "issues" are what lead me to red. I've done digital photos for years and suddenly went back to film medium format, I suddenly noticed how lazy i became with digital. With 10 exposures medium-format film, poor sensibility, etc, i really discovered again what is framing,CC, lighting, thinking a shot, etc and my work is better since this experience. What I mean here is it's hard to understand people who want not less than 20000 iso or nothing, 2 days of battery life and a lot of insane specs. Too much assistance in these machines lead to uniform pictures. I'm just afraid, like what I saw in those 4 C300 shorts that the image will be solid but will just have the same look whatever you tweak in post. Scarlet is more work, but there is no creativity without work. Raw is like having a film negative. You watch 100 Red videos on vimeo and you have 100 different image styles, some are really crappy, but some are really speechless. Anyway, the C300 will be a great new tool too.
