Canon EOS C300 NEW pricing!!!

When I read the title of this thread, I was like F*CK YEAH, good news! The prices is lower now! Cool.

Weird how this thread has dissolved into bitching and back-biting for most of its run.

But your example is 180 degrees opposite of what you meant. Because there's a massive element that is different here: ACTION. Why did Netflix reverse course? Because people complained? Of course not. They reacted because people TOOK ACTION: they cancelled in droves. They did something that mattered. They didn't sit around complaining, they actually used the power of customer choice and took action, and the end result was so significant that Netflix had no choice but to comply. And Bank of America? They were hit with a movement of people closing their accounts and moving to credit unions. Again: not just complaining, not just whining, but taking action.

-------

So how is this different? Because I would be willing to bet that 97% of the folks complaining about the price and specs here aren't CUSTOMERS at all. They wouldn't buy a C300 because they couldn't possibly afford it. And they aren't going to be buying a Scarlet or F3 in protest either. So they are irrelevant to Canon's bottom line and are therefore powerless in this situation. I mean, seriously, what are they gonna do: boycott t3i's because they think the C300 is too expensive? Stop buying Canon lenses until Canon brings the price down? Those are the types of actions that might actually make a difference, but you would need millions and millions of customers to do it, to make any real difference. And I bet there aren't a hundred thousand people in the world who care enough about the C300 to even complain, much less take action.

-------

Pointless waste of breath that unnecessarily clutters up the forum with ugliness. My take, anyway.

-------

That's your opinion. I feel like they didn't "miss the boat", they took an airplane to a different destination. You, and the other hundred thousand folks wanting a $5k camera, were expecting a $5k camera. They weren't interested in building one. You all wanted to go to Disneyland, they wanted to go to Aspen.

-------

If you don't buy something else, then -- they have lost nothing. At all. If you show them what they've lost, then maybe they'll rethink what their approach is.

Good points again Barry. Bottom line here, yes, we (on this forum) are not their target.

So....the point of complaints appears to ultimately say, "Hey Canon!!!! Make US your target!!!"

Let me just enumerate something that I didn't in my prior comments. If you check my post history, I've stayed out of the C300 fray because it is too ugly for me to take time to try to wade through it.....so I'm not saying that this is MY OPINION....but rather, it is clear that this latest announcement from Canon has "stirred people up" at "our level" of film making (on our forum for certain). Like I mentioned, I'm not sure that I like it (I certainly haven't posted many comments on the matter), but if nothing else, Canon ***can*** see a hornet's nest of activity at our level.

As I mentioned, hitting them at the cash register is the best way to make it happen. On our forum, it looks like that's what's going to happen, but as you have pointed out, they weren't likely counting on us as customers in the first place......therefore:

When I see the frustration and bitterness from folks on our forum, I'll understand that what they really mean is, "Hey Canon!!! We want a product at our level of film making!!! We're bitter and frustrated that the C300 is not!!!"

...and lastly, I don't need to do anything to get people to take action or do anything to show their displeasure for Canon's product, many folks already are. I'm not a part of any of those actions, but I appreciate their intentions. (Not sure if I agree with their methods, but it's more than I'm doing anyway...)

As for me, back to working on my next project.

Cheers, Barry!

Most people were not aware that the 'historical' announcement was the canon entry into the CINEMA world, and then, oh yeah, here's a c300 hundred on the side.

But from this teaser, I can see how people could be mixed up that the c300 was intended to make history. And that it did not, and apparently never was canon's intention.

I'm pretty sure we're like 99% there already. A T2i or GH2 and a few decent primes will get you an image that just wasn't possible at that price 5 years ago. You can pixel peep and talk about moire this and rolling shutter that, but for the most part all these large sensor cameras are delivering something spectacular at consumer prices.

+1 - Which is why I haven't ungraded from my 5DII and GH2? I more concerned with other parts of my production than any new camera. The HDSLR was truly historic.

Unless I have a serious need for a job, the current crop of cameras is more than sufficient for most of my shoots, and I can rent should the job call for something snazzier. I do think a moderately priced C100 would be something I would definitely buy though - having worked with an XF100 and XF300, I find that the XF100 is an absolute steal when you consider it's price vs. it's bigger brother and I imagine the C100 would follow along the same lines.

This is my approach as well but don't think I will be dropping 14k on one just yet. Still waiting for the 5III or that 4k HDSLR they mentioned at the event.

I can't wait for the Gopro 4k...

I'm just curious when all the big players start bringing out 4k technology what will Red do?

They're already doing 5K with the Epic, and they are working on HDR. There will always be something to put at the top. Other notable improvements that people at the top are willing to pay exponentially more for, is better color accuracy. and that is like making a swiss watch, so prices at the top should always be high. If for nothing else, than being a little better, and maybe having gold insulation, or something.

Which is why, I am perplexed as to why these companies tier image quality so aggressively.

But in that regard, Sony is doing 8K: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/show-h...bsccms-assets-show-highend-F65.shtml#/f65t3_3

I have read every post since the beginning of this thread. Seems that 10,000 Euros is a pretty acceptable price point, especially for pros, but was a less than historic entry, and has left a gap in the market still open for something next year.

I for one think the price is okay if the C300 and it's image quality is the best one can get for $20K.

If image quality is all that is on the table, than for $20k one could get the scarlet, or the sony f3 with s-log and 10bit 4:4:4 recording. Just saying'.

I must say that was horrid. Why would any company want to make a cheap institutional with a useless 'cameraman' to promote their new cine camera?

I wish I hadn't seen that...
I have a feeling this is not the c300. Just a way to get hits. Hey, I'm gonna go out with my C300 and shoot my kids at the park. Believe me on my vimeo, I tagged it with C300, but have no stills of me with the camera yet.

EDIT - The footage is real. Quote from canon's euro site:

" – it included a special presentation area where French filmmaker Pierre Deschamps explained how he fared during his first test of the Cinema EOS System."

Didn't think of that. I hope that's the case...
