Canon EOS 1D Mark IV: It's here!

The 1D series (not to be confused with the 1Ds, of which I have two for my commercial work) has always been a photojournalist's camera.

16 mp is fine for PJ work - and the video is "just fine" for PJ work.

Come on Jim Jannard.

Michael Schoenfeld

In Vincent's video I see the same Moire etc. I'll wait until raw footage shows up, but my 7D's and MKii stay.

That's the first thing that I noticed.

Not very safe to use striped shirts with any of these DSLRs

Basically, it has the exact same video capabilities as the 7D, with a slightly better image (due to the better sensor) and less crop (but still not full frame), all at three times the price of the 7D.

Pretty worthless, IMO, unless you're buying it for stills or if you just have more money than you know how to spend...

I think it makes a pretty great stills camera. Can't forget that's its primary use.

Well, that's one announcement down. Sony's comes at 2pm eastern, and then it's the Jim Jannard show...

Yeah stangely enough... I'm down for hearing jannard's announcement after those fake specs for the 1D. How odd's that? The whole 1080/60 and 720/120 got me like whoa.

Backfire!

Of course. And I have no doubt that, as a still photo camera, it's worth every penny. But we didn't come to DVXuser to talk about still photography, did we?

I think this is funny.

So what if it was corrected and denoised? This is how most of the images you see are processed and presented to you. I'm glad there is a well thought out, edited, professionally post handled example of what you can get out of the camera. God knows there are plenty of uncorrected vignettes set to some indie song out there to make your eyes bleed.

Well Will, because I'd like to see what the actual cam really is. How would you like it if someone removed all the noise from the first hvx videos then you went and bought one? Kinda false advertising but am glad Vincent was honest and disclosed that.

I don't know, DVXUSER does have a dedicated footage/stills thread for the HDSLR's.

Hm, The high ISO is really nice... How will this cam work in low light? If it gets out before the 15th November, its a buy for me...

The unprecedented (for a DSLR) rolling shutter performance on this thing was probably done for the PJs and sports photogs as well...

My interest in Scarlet has skyrocketed. The DSLRs whet the appetite, but I'm still hungry. As far as I'm concerned, Scarlet was looking pretty much bypassed two months ago, and now it's my #1 contender depending on pricing and workflow.

I thought Canon might do something awesome with the 1D based on Tim Smith's speech back in June, but I guess it was just too soon and so it uses the same hardware.

FOR THE DSLR-AFICIONADOS, THAT MEANS IT'S EVEN BETTER THAN THE 7D, YAY, WAHOO. Probably has all the same issues, BUT FOR THOSE WHO DON'T THINK THERE ARE ANY ISSUES, WOW, THAT'S GREAT NEWS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU.

But it probably uses the same technology, not the video-oriented boost that Tim was talking about. So I wonder if that's for a 7D Mark II, or a 5D Mark III, or if they're going to go straight to an XLH2 with it?

According to Vincent, it pretty much sees in the dark; he said he shot that film pretty much at ISO 6400.

Indeed, the Scarlet is looking even more like the holy grail than it ever did. I can't wait!

I have been on the fence about a Scarlet but I agree with Barry, the cam that doesn't exist (today) is starting to sound better and better.

Workflow's just not gonna be an issue, I think. It should be pretty easy to deal with it in other NLE's like it's handled with ADobe Premiere by the time the cameras are in the hands of the masses.

Price however... We've touched on that one, before. It's a hot topic, burns the fingers. I understand the sudden relapse of interest, though. The good thing is that I highly doubt anything'll show up in the next six months so we can all go and play with the toys that we own now.

It does still have the same issues. And the lowlight, while nice, just isn't going to sell me two to three thousand dollars deeper. =T I'd rather keep an MKii and have two 7D's for a little bit more.

Great and short-lived adventure this was! Looking forward to the next one.

Remember that "7D killed my Scarlet dreams" thread? :)
Hey, for many, it did. The 7D is capable of fantastic results and the price is pennies.* For many folks who don't see or care about the issues with the 7D, the results that you can get from it, combined with the rock-bottom price, is definitely a killer, as is the GH1.

Not taking anything away from the 7D; I still think the "real" Scarlet starts with the S35 sensor.

*and yes, it's also capable of some sucktacular results, and anyone who doesn't like that can just stick their head in the sand and pretend it doesn't happen

The good thing for me is that I've been holding out and still don't have a VDSLR- didn't go for the %D due to the 30p issue, didn't go for the 7D because the 1D mark IV rumours were already around.

Jim will announce the next gen Reds on the 30th, and he said something about further delays- which could mean a month or two, or maybe more- I'm thinking March 2010- for the S35 Scarlet, which could very well be FF Scarlet now :)

Seeing that I'm on the other side of the globe, it will probably not be easy for me to get one of the first batches of cameras, which could take me further to about Summer 2010. By then, I'm sure we will have heard of a Canon Pro Video camera, a Panasonic sucessor and a Sony one. So there will be much more options to consider.

This 1D Mark IV seems like a good bet for the type of shorts I want to make over here. Neon lights, dark, noir setting, natural light, ISO 6400 and no noise, 1080 25p... Seems like a very good purchase, indeed! And, of course, its a killer stills camera. I just HOPE that it gets around before the 15th!!!

And I'm sure that there will still be plenty of people who will be happy to stick with their 7Ds and GH1s instead of paying the big bucks for Scarlet. But at the same time, there are plenty of people who have been properly disillusioned by your tests. Hey, it needed to happen.

I totally agree with you there, but my wallet (or bank account) weeps.
