Canon EOS-1D C 4K Full Frame Camera Announced

I don't think there will be a recorder that takes 4k signal via a fragile HDMI port. It's like driving F1 on a street :P
Agreed, I would think it would be ridiculous and unreliable. The 4k in the HDMI specification is likely designed to accomodate the next-gen PlayStation or XBOX 4k output, going to a computer monitor. Certainly not for a moving camera and the flexing and bending that would come with such usage.

If... which i suspect, HDMI can support these 4k resolutions. I doubt the connection to the camera will be an issue. For that amount of money, the camera will probably always be encased in a cage and the HDMI cable will be additionally support by the cage.
What I dont understand, is the ridiculous price tage... not to mention the size/cost/speed/limitations of internal types of memory.
Yes, i know that anyone using this for video, would be directly outputting via HDMI to some external storage solution. But realistically speaking, this was "advertised" as a rugged camera, that can go where no others dare to go. Can you imaging carrying in the field the type of support gear needed to run this camera? It should forgo the standard memory slots, and just have a 2.5in HD slot installed :P

I've just found something interesting:

Canon 1D C 4K data rate : 500Mbit/s
RED ONE Max datarate: Redcode42 (1:8 compression) is 336Mbit/s
Scarlet Max datarate: (1:6 compression) is 440Mbit/s

Am I missing something?
I know that Redraw is RAW (you can adjust WB easily), but it seems it is still more compressed then what we will get from the 1DC.

Am I missing something here? I *think* the fastest commercially available CF cards write at (theoretical) 60MB/s and I doubt that's sustainable for a long period of time. That's only 480 Mbit / s, and very unlikely that it can be sustained and reliable at that top speed. So what CF or SD media can write out at 500 Mb /s for many minutes reliably? Is the 4K only for external recorders?

It's gotta be a compressed data rate, if it writes out to CF cards. Thats why the Sony F65 and RED cameras write out to SSD.

You can't compare like this. Not only Red makes great cameras but it also has the REDCODE codec which is great if not the best. LoOk at a redcode highly compressed shoot , it's amazing.

What's more 4K 500mbps out of HDMI or recorded on a 64g CF card I doubt it. I don't think any CF cards does that specially when it reads at 90mps max

Looking through the specs I still cannot see anything physically to distinguish this from a 1DX. And no, I wasn't expecting a 4k camera for the $3500 cost of a 5DIII, but I wasn't expecting $15k either, something moderately more than a 1DX perhaps.

As for development costs, I would be willing to make a moderate wager that this was being developed in tandem with the 1DX, so would share the cost. The only difference I can see is the red "C", and even Leica doesn't charge that much for a red dot ().

The only thing that could justify the cost is if the 1DC used hand selected higher spec bins of it's components, but I would also expect Canon to make a big thing about this.

yes...
new firmware would unlock more power of digic 5 ...
canon develop new sensor design(5d mark 3, c300 ,1dx, dc) and digic 5 and now they try to milk it for next few years ...

The 1D-C will flop. It just has LAZY written all over it, as it's basically a firmware up-grade (very expensive one). At the the very least for $15K, maybe put it in a re-designed body with at least a flip screen.

Canon cinema is such a joke. What are they trying to accomplish at this point with over priced and under spec'd cameras?

It does seem rather strange that they are outright advertising that its essentially the 1dX with a jacked up firmware upgrade. But now since we know what the hardware is capable of, would it stand to reason that it would be possible for the magic lantern folks to unleash some of that power on the 1DX? Wouldn't that be something.

I bet Canon's built a fortress around the 1DX's firmware. Hacking it might be nigh on impossible, or else Canon's put in a booby-trap that will brick any camera that you attempt to hack.

why?
because of the price?
digic 5 is 17x more power than digic 4 ...
dual digic 5 can do 24 4K easily...
probably even one is enough ...

Perhaps I have a different perspective as I'm a software developer in my day job, but creating and selling software is a fair a valid business. If Sony (S-log) or Canon choose to sell software upgrades (firmware), that's fair. When you buy a PC or Mac you have to purchase a high-quality NLE and other software tools. Same thing for apps on iPad, phones, etc. Cameras are now computers too, and selling software upgrades will become more common (perhaps even app store downloads once cameras get more network access).
