The EOS-1D C features an 18.1-megapixel full frame CMOS image sensor that offers a wide range of image acquisition options, including 4K (4096 x 2160), HD (1920 x 1080); or 18-megapixel (5184 x 3456) still images. The 4K is recorded as Motion JPEG; the HD is recorded as H.264; and the still images are recorded as RAW or JPEG. All of the selected motion imaging formats can be recorded as normal gamma-corrected video or with Canon Log. In addition, like with other Cinema EOS products, the EOS-1D C exhibits incredible low-light performance, ensuring optimum image quality under conditions of extremely low scene illumination, essential for natural-looking image capture when shooting in challenging environments. For capturing stills, the EOS-1D C offers the same level of high performance as an EOS DSLR, with top-of-the-range focusing, exposure, and burst mode.
The EOS-1D C is designed to go where other 4K cameras cannot go - into hostile environments, into very cramped spaces, mounted on the end of extended jib arms, or embedded on-set. With onboard 4K recording at 24p or HD recording at a range of frame rates up to 60p; and Clean HD via HDMI, the EOS-1D C offers additional capabilities for film and TV production as well as specialty image acquisition applications. For added versatility, record start/stop can be remotely controlled by EOS Utility Software via a WFT unit.

The Canon press release says that the EOS-1D C has a list price of $15000.

For what that camera costs, one could get a used Red One package. I'm not sure what the advantage is of having a 1DC considering that option.

If I understand its a full fame 18,1mega pixel and it records at 4K, it crops the sensor to make it an aps-c, so no more line skipping? cool!

However, I'm getting a red Scarlet package for this price, with raw video and 12bit ....

P.S. that's RED 12bit file, not real 12 bit.

For what that camera costs, one could get a used Red One package. I'm not sure what the advantage is of having a 1DC considering that option.

the size and weight difference to a red one package and batteries and storage costs and battery run-time. every thing attached to the camera or any rig or dolly or jib option will cost less and weight less and the size of the sensor is significantly different. and even though canon is not the king of color accuracy, anything compared to a red one is night and day difference.

take it easy guys, the camera was just announced. we don't even know everything about it yet.

they added log, 4k up to 60p, clean hd to hdmi, extreme low light capability, very small, very rugged. the 1d line is their high end, not entry level. and off course it will cost more than the 1dx, what did you think. or what drugs are you on.

it will do clean hd through hdmi, that could seriously hinder some of their c300 sales if hd is close to aps-h size sensor. and they just made the c300, they can't make something that would eclipse it in this short time frame.

maybe wait to see more info on sensor area in 4k, hd, what other crop modes if any, how good the hdmi signal is, what recorder options could be announced by what companies(maybe 4k in this camera is only internal. but anyway, too many 4k camera announcements so we might see new 4k recorders announced soon), rolling shutter which could be an issue. and remember this is the 1st generation with more to come in a very rapid pace cycle.

did they announce the next cxxx series?

I mainly gawked at the price. It's just over double that of the $7K 1D X which is essentially the same camera, just without the ability to produce a decent video output. Call me crazy, but $8,000 for a firmware upgrade (yes, I'm simplifying things) is just insane.

That being said, the 1D X in itself is way outside anything I can afford. I'm just baffled as to the very expensive pricing Canon seem to be introducing these Cinema EOS cameras at. Sure, RED cameras have their own set of expenses and crew requirements, but seriously. $15,000 for a non-4K, non-raw video DSLR?

the form factor of the pro body dslr does not change, so same body does not mean same hardware on the inside.

This camera is aimed at professional use at the Broadcast/Film level. The 24mm Cinema Prime lists for $6800. For the quality it will provide and relatively tiny form factor, RED, Sony devices don't really compete.

4K cannot be out put by HDMI so it's only recorded internally. I don't see much point in recording internally 4K at 50mbps apart from avoiding line skipping .
a sharper 5D mark III with clean out put and cropping like nikon does , a cheaper C300 and a C500 at 4K would have been enough in the line I think.

According to the official spec, EOS 1D C records 4K at roughly 500Mbit/s, 1080/60p at 180Mbit/s, 1080/24p25p30p at 90Mbit/s

Now Sony knows that it has to bring in the NEX-FS700's 4K recorder for less than $5000 ;-)

Does anyone know whether the 1D C still has the1D X's 29 minute, 59 second recording time limit?

No, it's marketed as both a stills camera and digital cinema camera. the $15000 includes european taxes on video cameras.

Well, not necessarily. The HMDI 1.4a specification does provide for 4k output. Now, I don't know if the DSLR C outputs 4k over its HDMI port or not, but I'm just saying that it's theoretically possible that it could.

Ah, so that's why it costs double a 1DX.

Seriously, I see no hardware difference between a 1DX and this 1DC. Canon are profiteering

I don't think there will be a recorder that takes 4k signal via a fragile HDMI port. It's like driving F1 on a street :P
