Canon C70 to get internal 12-bit Canon Raw Lite recording via firmware

Wow, that's a pretty big deal for some folks. I still don't love the ergs of this camera, but adding Raw internally makes a lot of sense to stay competitive against the external raw offerings of the Fx6.. If they could make the AF also a bit more R5-ish to also keep up with the new touch AF refinements that are coming to the FX6, that would also be a great move.

Excellent. They are getting it, everyone is slowly getting it.

Not to knock it off-topic, but their bigger cameras - 300 III/ 500 II - might get new modules (not sure what that means with their sensors), or new 8K versions of these cameras are coming, not exactly clear.

Yeah, and even more interesting (for me at least) is the mention of Compact Cinema lenses, presumably on RF mount.

They did that for the mirrorless' (although they just call it RAW Light since it's technically not CRL inside those cameras), so maybe they thought it was also a good idea to try it with the cinema cameras [it is].

OK, I don't need 6/8K RAW so I didn't look at the Canon EOS R-series specs too closely. Still great we can use affordable SD cards rather than CFExpress cards.

Actually you just answered why they did that...the C70 only has SDXC slots so it was likely necessary.

Not wondering why, really. Just relieved I don't have to buy CFexpress cards.

Can't find any specs on the EOS R, but do they use the same bitrate for 6K/8K?

EOS R is their cropped 4K camera (no 6K/8K or RAW), but the R5 has many different bitrates, 2600 all the way down to 60. It depends on the resolution and which mode is used.

well, the point is to get you to buy one thing now and another thing later. more sales

with the f5 I bought a used f3 then an fs7 but Sony never got the £12g of f5 from me - no 4K was the decider

no Raw was a problem with the c70 while the used c200 did have raw

Impressive they can get the raw light onto SD cards. As an operator I don’t like using the C70 unless it’s on sticks or a gimbal, but for the price it’s a pretty powerful cam. One of the underrated features is the ability to mount and have the menus read vertically for 9x16 video (and no I don’t love vertical video but unfortunately it’s going to be more and more common for anything not hitting a TV or Movie screen)

Depending on who you ask, it's not really any kind of "RAW" or they might have been in court with RED a long time ago.

IMO, this is just another one of Canon's codecs/formats that they've created in house and are using the word in its name.

Putting aside the process and the jumping through loopholes to get it internally vs. externally, "Cinema RAW Light" always sounded great on paper regardless of what it truly is.

With this new one, 645mbps is only 80MBps so it's pretty easy for most modern cards, especially when some claim to be able to record 2.5x-3x faster than that.

It's easy to get caught up in the RAW hype, which I sure do sometimes, but 645 is not that much more than the 500 they've had in their 5D Mark IV since 2016 which also recorded [Motion JPEG] on SD cards (although I can tell you from personal experience it was a lot harder back then to find reliable cards).

Probably will be up to 30p. CRL drops to 10-bit 4:4:4 (or maybe 4:2:2) @4K/60p in the C200.

What? How could it possibly be raw if it's 4:2:2? Raw isn't even 4:4:4 yet, it's just every photosite recorded. 4:4:4 would happen after it's debayered. If what you say is true, then it's majorly false advertising
