Canon C300 MKII Announced

This was the only camera I was looking forward to and now that I know it doesn't have high framerates in 4K (for now) I can sleep easy!

Its the most rented camera... One of the if not the best selling in its market...

The C300 was the ONLY camera in the 50mb/s, 422, S35 camera market and what broadcasters were in need of. Now there is solid competition in the segment so it will be interesting to see how that shakes down.

I'm really interested in how the new flatter Clog2 with more DR and bigger colour space will retain the easy to grade reputation of the original Clog designed for 8bits and smaller colour space. Wrangling more bits back into rec709 is always a little tougher and wonky things can happen.

This. With a7S around a stop behind the FS7 and the pocket+RAW very close to the FS7.

And I'll be very pleasantly surprised if the C300II has better DR than the FS7. It would mean that Canon has finally solved their sensor tech issues (or bought a sensor from someone else). That would be really great, but I need proof before I believe it. I want to see a side-by-side DR test against an FS7, with a wide exposure ramp.

Yeah, besides Arri and maybe the F65 all the other cameras seem to fall short from the claimed DR. Red claimed 13 stops or so with the R1 but it's actually around 10 or 11. With MX they tried claiming 14 but it does around 12. Dragon is also being debated and many are not finding the claimed DR. Same with F5 and F55.

This says 15 stops of DR.

The camera is also the first Cinema EOS model to feature new Canon Log2 technology, which enables the 15-stops of dynamic range, which Canon said is significantly wider than previous Cinema EOS cameras.

That is just another press release. Not a test. They can and will say anything they want to sell the camera. Let's wait for the real tests. Canon also claims 12 stops with the C300 but in reality is more like 10 stops. Log is not a miracle maker.

Canon is always conservative with specs unlike some of the Japanese companies and (one american company). The 15 stops of DR is when shooting with Canon Log2. Can you tell me which other Camera has got 15 stops of DR?

So far none. Because the C300 MKII is not released yet and has not been tested to confirm it actually got 15 stops. You can claim anything in a press release. Let's see tests. Canon claims 12 stops with the C300 but it can't do that. Log2 is just log. It can't make miracles. The sensor is what it is. I will wait and see. If you want you can believe manufacturers. I believe tests.

Articles from nofilmschool and engadget list the retail price as $16K and $20K respectively. That's a lot higher than the UK pricing (usually it's not that much more despite the pound to dollar rate). Street price maybe $14K in the US?

Yea you didnt quite smell what I was cooking... I'll be more blunt:

Its the most rented camera... One of the if not the best selling in its market...

A camera selling vs not selling is the only true "issue" that a camera can have. regardless of what quirks/problems/limitions it has, it sells. It beats the competition. In the eyes of those demanding it and especially the eyes of canon, it has no real issues

Oh, I know it's highly successful in its market. But I never wanted one, bought or rented. If the C300II has more DR than the FS7, I may want to rent one at some point. But I'll have to see a side-by-side test because the marketing claim is, at a minimum, surprising.

They are not prizes for cameras or motion picture technology, but filmmaking art/craft. Besides, the best ones are not even nominated, let it alone for the leftover...

My reply was to his comment about the academy nominating only Alexa and film and Canon. I was truly interested in knowing which movie shot mainly on a Canon camera had been nominated for best cinematography. Because I know of none. Not saying it matters. But since he brought it up I wanted to know which movie he was talking about.

The film "Blue is the Warmest Color" was entirely shot with the original C300 and had got the Palme d'Or in the Cannes film festival. It is not just the IQ of camera but the IQ of the person behind it which matters.

Sure. This is why I don't understand why bring this up. It's not like Blue is the Warmest Color fooled anybody that it was shot with an Alexa or other high end camera. At the time when there was a buz about the movie the first time I checked the trailer I saw it was shot with a cheap camera. It looks like that. 28 Days Later was shot with the XL1 and was a wide release. It has nothing to do with the topic. This is a camera forum and we discuss cameras and image quality. Not quality of stories or quality of movies.

Wow!

Very clever Canon. You really listened and worked it out (I have to say this as a FS7 owner):

- ISO via dial !!!
- Frame Rates via dial !!!
- ND up to 10
- endless assignable buttons and functions
- moveable expanded focus !!!
- illumination of the important buttons !!
- sync/TC + RAW ports in camera (no additional back)!!!
- OLED display with detachable cable !!!

Curious to see what the camera will be in reality when it's available.
Nicely done so far Canon.

$15,999.

It won't be discounted ... because it won't be in stock.

Yes I agree. As they did with the C100 MkII they have addressed many things on the original that needed fixing by listening carefully to what the users said. Sure, we all wanted more frame rate options, lower price point etc. etc. but I think this camera will be a terrific success and, crucially, will "just work" straight out of the box without annoying beta firmware issues, lens adapter quirks (important to me as I have lots of Canon glass) and so on. The only thing that concerns me slightly is the increased weight over the already reasonably heavy C300 - one of the things I love about my C100 (the original) is just how small and light it is for run-n-gun.

Just to note, the Convergent Design Odyssey7Q+ will fully support the new Canon C300 mk2, in both 4K video output and 4K RAW output, plus in 2K/HD 12-bit 444 output. We'll support the new XC10 as well.

Would 4K 60p have been awesome YES but i think this camera will be really useful outside of that. I am actually surprised Canon added all these new features, not surprised at the suggested price though.

Hey Mitch, will that require an additional license or is it out of the box?

I see you met one of Christopher's posts! LOL : ) No worries, just half part of the game... : D

Not part of the game for me - if people want to be aggressive they should take it somewhere else.
I also don't own an FS7, or any other camera, haven't done for 5 years and quite possibly never will again so I have no bias or vested interests. I do use a lot of slow motion (including Phantom - I'm an operator and trainer) as I shoot wildlife and it's essential and when I see a new camera it's definitely one of the first things I look at.
