Canon C300 MKII Announced

That's a respectable package, stripped down the camera will be great on gimbals, drones and car mounts.
Potentially the "looks" will allow it to pair well in production with other industry workhorses.

Probably not a bad investment. We all know what a hit the C300 was.

How does this sensor work? The original C300 had a 4K sensor (8.3MP) it downsampled internally to 2K. This one is starting with a 9.84MP sensor, barely over 4K. So is there no (or very little) downsampling going on here? How will that effect the image by comparison?

The camera will be reliable and probably look better than it's specs. I still hate the high mounted handle and screen if you want XLR's and the lack of interchangeable mounts, but it represents a nice step up. I would expect the street price to be about where the original C300 started from - $14,999. Always cheaper than the retail announced price.

One other thing I noticed which is nice. Two ND filter wheels giving you 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 stops of ND. That's nice for keeping a
low profile package, even when shooting in bright sunlight. (With these new extremely sensitive sensors, sometimes 6 stops is
not enough). No real need for extra filters on the front in a mattebox in many situations.

Another feature is the ability to set controls and even do touch screen rack focus setups on an iPad.

Tthe benefit of the OLED EVF particularly to doco, event and ENG people should not be underestimated. This will remove the need for many to rig it up when you need to travel light and be fast in the field.

With the exception of price, it looks like a pretty perfect camera on paper. You can even get raw out of it if you need it...

First time in a while i have been impressed with Canon specs.

As someone noted in other forum

so:
4K = max 30fps
2k no crop = max 60fps
2k center scan / double crop = max 120fps
really dissapointing

Again for a super pricey that will give you a loose of a 40% of its value in say 4 years (as currently Canon droppped the price of existing C300)

Compared to the FS7 I think the C300MKII doesn't improve upon anything. 14 or 15 stops is not something that'll make a real difference but higher fps is.

But I guess this camera will become very popular due to the huge C300 user base today.

Thats ok. And I will once again be waiting patiently when it happens, to reap the benefits of those price drops.

Both true. But, C500MKII is out there soon. Offering HFR/slowmotion, so... Just pay the ticket.

-To me cropping has always been the best method of using the sensor for high FPS rather than the weird line skip stuff Sony does.

-AF. The bear in the room. Yes I know all 'cinematographers' think AF is for losers (while they think they can focus at 4k with a 720p monitor !) - I used a 70d(?) as C cam last week and, well the AF is smoking - seems like some reasonable implementation of AF could be handy.

As with all cameras 70% is feel in the hand (prompt menues etc).. and the FS7 doesnt win manny fans there. I guess the Canon has a WB wheel?

That's funny, every actually half decent movie I watched last year was shot at 24fps, with the exception of the occasional scene for which the producers rented a phantom. But the look of the image (color/dr/resolution/etc.) was prioritized in every instance!

And every such movie focused on color, sharpness, etc. first.

But what do I know. What does the academy know... nominating only Alexa and film and Canon (and Go Pro.... to be fair)-shot material over Red and Sony for academy nods this year?

Sony's 14 stops are BS. The F5/5 pushes things 1.5 stops and introduces hideous blue/yellow noise in an attempt to grasp at a little bit of highlight detail it renders poorly; Canon's using a dual gain path to produce more real DR than the Alexa (which is phenomenal) produces... at a higher resolution... and with better colors (at a lower frame rate, to be fair).

If the only way you can make your content compelling is by relying on slow motion... enjoy the FS7, though!

This thing is bonkers.

Again, both equally true. I guess it can sound a bit repetitive : D one after the other, but rather accurate.

To me the FS7 is a tool and if the director/client want to do 150fps or 60fps in 4k I say sure we can! I like to say sure we can! But I have no intention to shoot features with the FS7, just great looking commercials and corporate videos.

Looks good to me - finally gets over the DR and bit-depth limitations that made it hard to justify Canons over the competition. Could be really great for gimbal/car-mount type work.
