C100: Canon C100 Mark II Announced 60P, New VF, & New OLED Panel Texas Media Systems

New focus + better EVF + ND filters = really good ergonomy, this camera will be killer for quick type of work, this is a great feature for document, etc.
But I hate "pink" colors, we need wait for more footages from this new camera .-) .

Is anyone excited about the new camera? It just seems to have almost no one energized, it feels like every other camera that is coming out or has come out in the last year has 10x the coverage/posts. I guess I am just expressing frustration that Canon seemingly is releasing such an under specced camera, and I wanted to say it out loud.

Well there's 29 pages in this thread, and the camera isn't even out yet. I'd say there is quite a bit of excitement.

I totally wasn't trolling, and I really would love to get a C100 Mark II, a lot of that has to do with all the EF glass I have, but I am kinda down on the specs. The negativity out there for the C100 MII seems so high, and Canon in general. Even the 29 pages of this thread are not filled with much excitement. I have probably read and absorbed too much of it. I was thinking that I bought my 5D Mark II when it was released somewhere around 2009, and in many ways the camera is still relevant. But will a C100 MII be relevant in 2018, 2019? Does it even have the potential to have value in 18 months. It seems so unlikely that any new cameras from every other manufacturer will be released in the next year that don't have 4k, thicker codecs, color space et al.

As always, this site is such an amazing source of information and sharing, thanks to everyone for that.

Well, it's not a brand new ground breaking camera. It's an upgrade to a camera we already have that fixes a few of the more annoying issues, at a similar price. I'm glad it exists. I can't say I'm "excited" for it.

Yes, I think you nailed it. Its not there there isn't excitement...its just that we all know exactly what this camera is. There are no surprises. The honest truth...besides the "fixes" this new model has...the image it produces, more or less, is going to be the same as the previous model (with some minor exceptions). So the end result to the clients...may not make much of a difference. Its more for the user not the client...so its not going to make your business any more money or justify any price increase at all. The people that really benefit are the ones that don't currently own a Cx00 camera and would like to get into it. Then its just a nice model to get into.

I think the thing that has sparked a lot of excitement about this announcement is not this camera at all....in fact, its about a camera that has not officially been announced at all...the C300 M2. If anything...as soon as I heard this announcement, I immediately got excited for the "real" product Canon extends to release. Not saying the C100M2 isn't a "real product" but I am saying that Canon's target was most likely geared towards the release of their flagship and the C100's technology and development was an offspring of their primary target.

I'm personally excited to see what they have really been working on behind the curtain...and I don't think the C100M2 is it. I think the C300 will tell a lot more about what they have been up too. I just hope its good...or I think a huge part of the market will abandon them.

Has the C100ii 1080-line effective resolution from the 4K sensor?

Has the C100ii 1080-line effective resolution from the 4K sensor?

Canon has released two new C100 Mark II overview videos below.
Thank You, Terry, for the links. After I watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGKqGAvxcAY&t=1m17s where the (new) digital processing algorithm is explained, I was wondering, if the resolution of the 2K (1080p) image downsampled from the 4K sensor by the C100ii processor is comparable with the 1080p image downrezzed from the 4K footage of GH4? According to some reviews the only way today to get true 1080-line resolution is to use 4K videos and downrezzing it in post processing. If C100ii could do this straight out-of-the camera, then it would be a huge advantage, making the workflow much simpler than fiddling with 4K files just to get full 1080-line resolution Full HD videos. Has Adam Wilt or any respected reviewer measured the effective resolution of C100ii in this respect?
Thank You for the help, Miki

doesn't the mk i already do this?

In another thread I wrote this, see if it answers your question:

-----------------

In the original C100, the 1080p signal was extracted from:

  • 1920x1080 Red photo sites (2MP)
  • 1920x1080 Green[SUP]1 [/SUP]photo sites (2MP)
  • 1920x1080 Green[SUP]2 [/SUP]photo sites (2MP)
  • 1920x1080 Blue photo sites (2MP)

In the C100 mkII, the RED, GREEN and BLUE lattices are each extracted and interpolated up to 4k (8MP), before being scaled down to a 1080p signal. The benefit would be a natural smoothing effect at the internal 4k resolution (still at uncompressed stage), getting rid of moiré and aliasing, and perhaps averaging the noise.

Once scaled down to 1080p you arrive at a very pristine image.

All of this would seem to generate a more filmic image to me, since moiré and aliasing is typical video artefacts. I wouldn't draw any hasty conclusions before trying it out myself.

Canon has gone on record to say "larger than expected improvements in image quality".

I don't know why I thought the Mkii recorded 4:2:2 in-camera without needing an external recorder. Feeling better about my C100 purchase just a few months ago.

Proper slow-motion would be nice though, de-interlacing 60i seems to work, but I know it's not as smooth as it could be.

Here's the Freebies you can receive for Purchasing a Canon C100 MKII: http://cinemaeos.usa.canon.com/promotions/#c100mkii

He's asking if the C100 MKII will have a 4K Upgrade (or if it's possible to have a 4K upgrade). That's if my French is correct (haven't used it in a while). I don't think the C100 MKII will have a 4K upgrade.

The last sensational, according to Canon, firmware feature upgrade that I remember was bumping the 1Dc 4k mode from 24fps to 25fps.

I wouldn't hold my breath for C100 mkII 4k. As I've said before, the 'C100 mkII 4k' will most likely be called C300 mkII.

Hey guys. I am pretty much decided on the EOS cinema line as my next move up in camera. Just about everything on Staff Me Up is calling for a C300 right now. I can't afford that, but a C100 (orig. or mk II) with a recorder I would hope would be sufficient for most freelance stuff that calls for the C300.

I've been getting just about all of the freelance work from other production companies needing stuff shot locally for a little while. Good SEO is a big help on that. So I hope that having the right camera will help me boost that to get some of the freelance work in a 100 - 200 mile radius.

I've been shooting on the Panasonic AF100 since Feb. 2013. It has been a workhorse for me, and helped me make a livable income in my business's third and fourth years. It marked a new level for my business and has certainly paid for itself plenty. But its shortcomings are becoming more and more apparent to me, and is making the quality of my work fall behind sometimes. Especially the way that it blows out highlights when you're exposing something much darker. Looking on eBay, I think I can sell it for about $1,800-- maybe a little more if I include more lenses.

My first camera (Sony V1U) I bought new in late 09 for $3,300. Later bought a GH2 new, cheap enough to not really count. Then I bought the AF100 used for $2,900 in Feb. 2013. And a few months later, a good used Panasonic zoom camera to replace the Sony at $2,600. Then sold the Sony for chump change. So I haven't bought a camera new since 09, and was comparably green in all around experience vs. now. So I'm not familiar with all of my options when buying new.

When I bought used, I bought from Adorama and got 6 months no interest through Bill Me Later (now called Paypal Credit), and paid it off before then.

So my decision comes down to buying the new C100 mk II at $5,500 or buying a used C100 (orig.) for potentially about $3,600 (estimating here).

I'm leaning well toward the mk II. The improvements make it significantly more usable. Just having a screen that I can turn toward me when I have to be on the right side of the camera for interviews is a big deal. Besides the image improvements.

AbelCine shows that you can purchase anything in the EOS line for 1.99% interest at 36 months. That's only $170 in interest if I don't pay it off early. I like the sound of that. What do you guys think? Do I qualify for it, as a sole proprietor? Are there other options that anyone would recommend? Before anyone says it-- I'm very financially capable of buying the camera in cash right now. But I'm not going to do that.

http://financing.abelcine.com/2014/07/01/canon/

No other camera is on my radar. The Sony FS7 looks like it's a great camera, but it's not for me. As soon as I saw the price of the recording media, I knew I wasn't considering it. I'm open to other suggestions, but I'm not going back to the DSL(R/M) form factor. Plus, like I said, all of the freelance work is calling for the EOS cinema line.

Thanks!!

As far as transitioning from the AF100, you'll be quite amazed to know, many of us C100 owners were former AF100 owners! The C100 truly is an amazing "One Person" Rig! If you need the side facing LCD, yes, go for the C100 MKII. However, if you're looking for a deal on the "OG" C100, stay tuned to this forum and eBay. So many good deals on pre-owned C100's right now (and even more after the release of the C100 MKII)! You can't go wrong either way. I've owned 3 C100's over the last 2 years (went back and forth with the GH4 for a minute, finally came to my senses). The skin tones, ease of use, lens choices, straight out of the box look.........it's the camera! Get it, start shooting and much success with your business!
