Canon APS-C Camcorder Rumors... thoughts?

There is no doubt that an AF100 competitor is coming... the main question is when? Lets hope Canon moves faster than their history suggests.

there's not doubt in my mind that canon will bring an aps-c cmos EOS mount camcorder
but when,
what codec,
and what price remains to be seen

Why is this thread even here?
It's just a random rumor, not even news.
A 3 CCD block for 3 APS-C size chips would be huge. That's why nobody has done it.
It's just a dang pipe dream.

The APS-C model sounds like it's using the codec from the XF cameras. If so, that's a strong codec, broadcast quality.

If this rumor is true, Canon will dominate the market.

But look how long it took for Canon to come out with a professional flash memory camera to compete with the HVX & EX1. In the time it took for Canon to respond with one line of cameras, both Sony & Panasonic have already updated their codecs on SxS & P2.

I'm not expecting anything in this class from Canon until 2013, which by then Panasonic & Sony will have killed off the DSLR video craze. Hell,
I think that there is a better chance at JVC releasing a AF100 class camera before Canon.

With the dominance that Canon has in the DSLR video market right now, they have the opportunity to really take control... but what I've seen I think they just like their following of SLR class users, CHDK class users, XL1 class users & HV20 class users. I think they're thinking us video guys will forever stick with their DSLRs for video like zombie lemmings, when I think most of us have gone the DSLR way because it is a good replacement to a Letus / Redrock / etc. for 75% of the time.

Once the AF100 starts showing up in people's hands & Sony offers their version, Canon will be seeing a large drop off in sales.

based on the specs @ 20k+ seems unrealistic. everything in that rumor is unrealistic

thats cinema/broadcast territory already and i dont think canon has ever ventured that market

I really wonder why are people surprised at rumors like these ones? The nature of the business is to evolve. And new and better cameras will come. That is SIMPLE COMMON SENSE. Lots and lots of new developments will happen. And lots and lots of new cameras will be made. That is the only way companies will stay in business.

The rumor engines + a host of new announcements right now are really intended to pre-empt the launch of the AGF100. As long as the lingering doubt of other possibilitles exists, people will not just jump right in for Panasonic's cam. I would definitely take it all with a grain of salt, especially where Canon is concerned. I wouldn't even be surprised if someone from the company itself leaked this as a strategic ploy. Confirmed release dates matter more to me, than speculation. It could be two years before we see the results of all of this, and a price point which might be very disappointing for some here.

I thought the CR1 rumor was about the 1DS Mk4?

"The Radical 1Ds Mark IV [CR1]
SEPTEMBER 13, 2010 CANON 1DS MARK 4 FOLLOW ON OUR FORUM
So what’s going on?
I have received some cryptic information from a good guy about the 1Ds Mark IV or whatever it’ll be called.

We have already stated the new camera wouldn’t be around for Photokina and would be released in 2011. With each passing day, I’m believing that more and more.

So what’s so radical?

I’m told to take a look at the 4K camera for clues.
Don’t disregard the large sensor Canon showed off. Obviously it wouldn’t be that big, but there is something radical about the 1Ds4 sensor.
The word “Modular” came up.
That’s all I have for now."

Certainly I'd be interested. Of course, at this point, I have so much Canon glass, I pretty much have to be.

Only thing I question would be the late release date (both the Sony and Panny will have been out for 6-7 months by that point), and unless it's absolutely stunning, pretty much only Canon guys would be interested.

I don't think so, because a lot of people will still be using DSLR's for 2nd and 3rd cameras to backup their A roll camera. The market has been opened and people will remain curious. In many ways Canon is very lucky, they have a product which is truly hybrid, a stable base in the photography market, and at a price point which no one is going to compete with on video terms for b-roll. I truly don't think people will so much be replacing their DSLR's by these new cams, instead they will be adding their missing "A cam" to their lineup. So when the DSLR's come out with their next generation, people will still be interested anyway. The fact that so many have now invested in still photo glass only reinforces this trend.

Broadcast quality can be met with 8-bit, highly compressed codecs. Digital cinema has -- or should be considered to have -- more stringent requirements.
