Canon 5DS

I too hope Canon finally makes some headway on DR. My D810 is now 3 stops better than my 5d and it really shows in challenging environments (let alone the extra, often very useful, resolution).

Well, here's what DPreview said about DR:

As far as dynamic range is concerned, we're told that the new 5DS and 5DS R should give the same performance as the current EOS 5D Mark III. If true, this means that the new cameras won't be able to offer the same industry-leading dynamic range of Sony's current APS-C and full-frame sensors, but at least it isn't a step backwards. And hey - 50MP!

So, more of the same, but at least this time A LOT MORE of the same. Unless you care mostly about video, that is.

As to be expected and no surprise for me. Canon doing as little as it can get away with. Yes, as Dusty said some will love it but for most of the world it will be viewed as just another camera.

I myself would like what most of you seem to want mostly too which is some more DR, since I would mainly use a 50 MP camera in "non-controlled envoirnments" like landscapes and general outdoor photography. However, for indoor or studio DR isn't as much a deal breaker, I would think that color fidelity is more important (I mean, indoors I can change the flash power and/or reflectors to shrink the DR to 10 stops). So to me this camera sounds like an "indoor/studio camera" upgrade.

Ever been driving down the street and you see a banner, billboard, poster with your image seriously cropped from a horizontal to a vertical? I have. 100's of times. This is what the 5dMKs will take care of. And the advertising agencies will love it. If you don't understand that, then I can't and won't argue with you anymore.

A 50 MP camera is just what I need.
The ad agencies need at least 100 Mb files and up to now it's either Nikon D800 or medium format - slow and low ISO's - a pain.
This camera will get the job done and without having to change lens systems. 5fps is excellent compared to what the medium formats offer.

Shot three dozen of these images of a week ago. Luckily mine were portraits at f/1.2 so resolution wasn't such a factor, but deep down I still felt a bit squimish knowing they'd be used for single & double page spreads, billboards, posters, & the least forgiving of all, bus shelters.

And while loads of dynamic range are a nice feature, even on the lowly 5D3 I typically end up intentionally crushing it down during post.

Dusty, who are you arguing with? Yes, everybody understands that you will fall into the group that likes and can use this camera. That is great. As a Canon shooter myself, I am well aware of the 5D series can do as are many. We are entitled to not like something even though it works for some. Enough time has passed that I am ready to see more DR from Canon products. Just my opinion.

That house would be a blind person's navigational nightmare.

Since this is a video based board I get the frustration. Canon practically invented the hybrid camera, but the true fact here is Canon is separating the products. They said it a year ago to a lot of people at NAB and now we are seeing it happen. We have lots more options now so getting upset is a waste of time. If Canon chooses to not put 4K or upgrade video in a DSLR then move on.

Dusty likes every camera. Because he thinks about the possibilities. Each new camera opens up another possibility. He isn't ever banking on one camera to be the one.

There will never be, EVER, the perfect camera that has it all. Which is why they are making 2 versions of this camera. The 5d Mark IV will be the 4k video hybrid. And if it isn't, oh well. Buy a Sony or have your Nikon called back.

I've had many calls from my photo buddies lately. We are all thrilled with this announcement of this camera. Most of them are medium format shooters. We see this camera as a wonderful bridge between the formats and speed of the 35mm and the medium format. That is why this camera was built.

And now this thread is done. Dustylense just put the period on this subject. It's a new innovative camera designed for photographers that need a freakin lot of megapixels.

Just for the record I am speaking about the stills side of things since this is a stills focused camera. And not too upset either... :)

Chances are Canon is waiting until the NAB to unveil the video-centric hybrid and pro cameras. And, in any case, many industry watchers found it odd that the 5DS announcements were made so far in advance of the actual shipping date (estimated mid-summer) but Canon's reputation has been suffering as of late and their management obviously was concerned about falling further behind their rivals.

With CP+ opening this upcoming week, there are plenty of camera and lens news ....and also a bunch of sales and promotion packages. With 1D C and C500 being among the most discounted of all models, one has to suspect that their replacements aren't too far into the future. Given the 5DS release dates, 5D IV is unlikely to be postponed for arrival either ... but Canon has to clear its video camera inventory first.

I think this is their camera for the hardcore photogs, those that were saying "you think too much about video shooters and give us a compromised product, we want something that doesn't even shoot video". And, yes, if you spend time on photog forums you'll read something similar to that every other week.

So, let's wait for the video-centric products... but I'm not optimistic about those either. Canon still has to prove it is capable of increasing DR in RAW stills, as a first step towards increasing DR in video mode. And if the new rebels and the C100 mk2 are anything to go by, they're not about to launch any kind of revolution. We've had three of years of "the 5D3 is the only Canon DSLR that shoots decent video by today's standards", and I'm afraid they're going to go the same route again.

Stills remains the core of my business. One of my USP's in the small niche market I am in is the level of detail in my shots.

I shoot with an H3D-31ii Hasselblad (which is 31 megapixels). It amuses me to see people rubbishing these not-yet-available 50 megapixel Canon cameras on the grounds that they only go to ISO 6400. Bless. I rate the Hasselblad at ISO 80, and the ISO setting on the camera is pure metadata- ISO 80 is all you get, and f/2.8 is the fastest lens.

So I have a companion camera for available light situations where the Hasselblad just won't record an image. Usually I use the 7D I originally bought as a video camera.

Am I interested in the 50 megapixel Canons with low light performance around that of the 7D, or maybe a bit better? Hell yes.
Am I interested in the 50 megapixel Pentax 645z with good low light performance which might cover both bases? Hell yes.
Will I use the 25 mm f/0.95 Voigtlander on my GH4 to get an image when my other options can't get exposure, and use the 16 megapixel pics? Hell yes.

I'd like to see a dynamic range monster from Canon, too, but 50 megapixel full frame with an EF mount and decent autofocus? What's not to like?

Go out and take some pictures.

Cheers, Hywel.

The rumors - and you know where to find them - mention three-four separate video-centric cameras - a C300 MK II that will shoot 4K; an affordable GH-4 competitor; a fixed lens camcorder; and a high end/pro level C500 replacement that will aim for the prime TV/feature film market.

IMO, all these make perfect sense for the company. Performances and the exact specs are anyone's guess. Obviously, some of these products have been making rounds in the usual places.
