Canon 5DS

BTW, for pixel counters like myself - Olympus's updated EM-5 has pixel-shifting a la Hasselblad high end camera which allows Olympus to claim 40 MPX out of a 16 MPX sensor. The catch here is that you have to use sticks because, apparently, the pixels don't shift fast enough otherwise.

Hasselblad claims a 200 MPX equivalent out of a 50 MPX Medium Format sensor ... but you're not allowed to breathe while pushing the shutter button either.

So, maybe a year or two from today, this 50 MPX 5DS will appear rather pedestrian.

Seriously! What a dumb nit-wit entry. No headphone jack on a 50mp camera that is designed for PHOTOGRAPHERS.

And for some of you out there questioning this camera. At a certain level of photography one gets not a request, but the demand to shoot at certain high MP's. They are called for by MANY advertising agencies. I know because I have to rent big MP backs all the time for shoots. If this camera satisfies most of the agencies that I deal with, I gladly welcome this camera.

+1. To those of the what no 4k!, no headphone! crowd- Arri Amira costs $50,000 and doesn't take stills, how could that be? What were they thinking?

By the way, I found this story on a web a few days ago but, unfortunately, forgot where.

Anyway, to prove some camera high MPX capability - and I am pretty sure it wasn't a medium format cam - some photog was shooting a press conference with the German Minister of Defense Ursula vod der Leyen and the resolution/focus of his shots was so good, one could actually make a full identification of her fingerprints off her actual hands!

(this isn't what I first read but it's the same story off a different source)

.
And a more official one from Deutsche Welle -

Correction - it's 63 MPX Raw and 40 in JPEG!

Why nit-wit? The article is just supporting your post. Look.

I hope Canon are finally getting back to making good photographic tools, as there are far too many large sensor video cameras around now.

Because of this.

"There is no headphone socket in either model so is totally useless for serious video work…mind you it does sport time-lapse (TL) which is still the preferred tool for TL work."

Despite some of the responses here to that hdwarrior article I agree with what he says regarding video work, at least for certain kinds (documentary, etc). I for one will never again buy any camera to do video that doesn't include a headphone jack. And no, I can't and don't want to pay for a more expensive camera to get a lousy headphone jack that costs a pittance to include. If one manufacturer won't make that available on their cameras for a certain price, plenty of other manufacturers will, for the same price or less. Right now, that price line of cameras that include that feature is in the neighborhood of $1000-$1500. Any camera that purports one of its main features to be video, is above that price, and doesn't include a headphone (and microphone) jack will not get my money.

Now, that being said, Canon can make this a photography-only tool if that is their wish. They will just disappoint many of their fans who use the 5D series for video if they don't provide a suitable alternative.

How difficult is it for people to understand that THERE IS NO ONE TOOL TO RULE THEM ALL

We're talking about a PHOTO camera, any video capabilities it MAY have are strictly secondary to it's primary function of capturing still photographs.

Not only that, it's a professional photo camera, not a rebel, which gives it even more reason to not include video-centric hardware such as a headphone jack.

People can wish/whine all they want, at the end of the day Canon and the likes know what they're doing for their target markets better than anyone here can claim.

Year after year I'm surprised how the "perfect" camera never comes to market yet seems simple on paper; we all essentially are looking for the same things. The closest anything ever got are the REDs.. but power consumption and fan noise is a HUGE concern for me. I was going to pull the trigger on a C500 just last week as well then discovered that this $16,000 camera doesn't record 4k RAW internally? WTH Canon! Then he BMCC4k loos great... no swappable battery an no slow-mo?! Once again, why? It's as if every camera released is purposely gimped.

Yes, most cameras are needlessly handicapped. Sometimes the company handicaps the camera on purpose, to steer you to a model that costs more. Other times it's just an accidental oversight.

Not all of us want the exact same thing, but themes emerge among threads for future cameras. I scratched out an ideal camera in 2008, which I think was totally doable even then, yet it still hasn't arrived. Seven years later, my needs have actually shrunk. If I drew it up today, I'd be fine with 2 XLRs, not 4; 60 fps, not 240 (thanks to Twixtor); and just a lens mount, not a built-in lens.

Why does every one of Canon's still photo cameras have to maintain certain a level of video/audio functionality? This will shoot video but that's besides the point the 5D IV will be more geared towards video don't get too upset that this one isn't.

Putting a headphone jack on a camera that records terrible audio is a waste of money that still photographers don't want to pay for (myself included). The only thing the audio in any DSLR is good for is a scratch track.

I'm all for not crippling cameras, but expecting headphone jacks and additional hardware features that videoagraphers think is important is just silly to put on a camera marketed to still photographers.

Yeah, I forgot that this is not the actual replacement for the 5D3, so never mind. I was just a bit surprised at the vitriol directed at the article for having one sentence pointing out that it's not a great choice for video because it doesn't have a headphone jack. That's just a fact. However, "totally useless" was indeed an exaggeration on their part. It could be fine for some types of video work.

If you mean actual DSLRs only (i.e. with a mirror), I can't say if that's true or not. I wouldn't use one of those for video anyway because of the mirror so they can get rid of headphone and mic jacks for all I care. But I understand that some "DSLR"-like cameras, like the GH4 for instance, have good audio. Maybe this was all just a misunderstanding on my part.

The real question is, why would you even CONSIDER a 50mp camera for "serious" video work? Headphone jack or not! Again, this camera is made for photographers who won't give 2 sh**s about a video function much less a headphone jack. And I'm one of them.
The 5dmk4 coming later this year will be the hybrid stills video camera. And it will have a headphone jack.
