Canon 5DS

A poster on Canon Rumors went through Canon's earnings conference call from today. Their DSLR sales are down 17% Year-to-Year and they're blaming selfies ... OK, that was obvious ... they are also blaming themselves for introducing too few models (blinking nervously, as Sony tries to pass them ... although, Sony is the market leader in Japan with their mirrorless lineup anyway) ... the inference here is that they will copy Sony's approach and attempt to introduce more products more often ... this will also mean that each model will have to offer something different than simply a "little more of the same" than their previous strategy entailed ... in that context, a high MPX camera without video makes perfect sense ... higher end video should be coming from more video specific cameras, namely their cinema line ...

my take is that this is not so good for your average consumer who wants the best bang for his buck but may work out pretty well for those who specialize in one or the other ... 5DS promises to be be superb for portraits and the daytime landscape photography ... I'll speculate that sport/high FPS/low light/high ISO shooters might soon find products more suitable for their needs too ... it's somewhat of a novel approach, united by their variety of lenses ...

PS. I'll add that the Rebel line is more than enough for your ubiquitous average consumer ... some improvement is expected there with Rebel 6 or something in that vein too ... expected to be announced around CP+, which is in two weeks ...

Take still shots and do all kinds of ken burns effect. :D

This is actually a more serious problem than some may think it is. As we move into a 4k video world finding stills that are big enough to actually do a pan and scan on is becoming a lot more difficult. In the SD days it was crazy easy to find stills even from the 1930's that could be scanned high enough to do a somewhat decent pan and scan on. Now that we live in a digital world and the video is starting to match the resolution of the stills the whole ken burns thing is dying off quickly. Stills are going to have to start going much higher resolution if artists still want to use moving photos in a documentary.

I just hope they've managed to improve dynamic range a little - Sony/Nikon/Fuji are wiping the floor with them at the moment.

Canon should work on a cinema camera similar to the Black Magic, with EOS mount.

Can't give details but Canon does have a unannounced motion camera making the rounds on some productions & it's not a dSLR.

+1 It seems easier to pile on the resolution. The DR improvement effort is glacial in comparison. The above mention of this new camera being superb for portraits makes my chuckle a bit. Unless it has better DR, why would it be better for portraits? 50MP only makes the image larger...

Well, people don't use the medium format cameras for sports or wild life, do they?

The rumors are something at the NAB'15 (but the 5D MKIV will likely be another product entirely).

Medium format cameras are not used for sports/wildlife for reasons other than image quality. My point is that if the new 50MP camera has no better DR than a 5DIII or a 1D-X then it is no "better" for anything other than making larger images. Yes, some will benefit from larger images and a lower cost alternative to MF but the majority have plenty to work with at 22MP.

The $50,000 Hasselblad and Mamiya have the same 6,400 ISO rating and, from the various boards, Canon shooters have been looking forward to having a high MPX camera. And now they got it. With no complaints so far. They understand this is not for everyone.

BTW, according to the updated specs, it does have 1080P video (mentioned at 30 FPS without further elaboration).

I've heard of people using the new 645X for Wildlife, not sports though.

CP+ is in mid-feb.
The non-disclosure agreements allegedly expire on the 6th, so some more news should trickle out by that date too. As Ben mentioned a few posts earlier, some folks have seen newer models (whatever they happen to be) but can't talk about them in public forums.

I think it is great that the camera is being made. The more the merrier.
IMO, this is good news for the video shooters because Canon seems to be following Sony - and Panasonic, if we get honest about it - with more niche specific products. The lower end Rebels and 60-70 and 6-7 series may be true hybrids but the 5D and above will be more narrowly tailored.

Canon has so much potential hidden away in their technology that they could beat Blackmagic at the RAW small camera game, Panasonic at the 4k 'DSLR' game and provide a cheaper 4k C300 style camera, while providing an excellent lens eco-system.

It was actually quite smart of them to wait on their next line of products, because of out the current generation, after the FS7, they're the only ones that have something big left to announce. Supposedly one of them is an Alexa style C500. If they could just improve the dynamic range. . .
