Canon 550d vs GH1

From what I've seen just looking around the forums it's beginning to look fairly certain that Sony will be introducing a replacement for the A700 with video and it will be announced tomorrow. Apparently there are a couple of normally reliable sources that say they have seen and handled it but can't say more because of NDAs. I'd expect the price point to be slightly under the 7D and D300s if it is the same as its predecessor.

What I said before is no longer a rumour. Whilst the full press conference and the details have not been released yet, this pre-announcement release on the Sony website makes it clear that the A700 DSLR with HD video and AVCHD is referred to along with new mirroless cameras similar to m4/3 cameras (with HD video). I think some of these will be displayed as concept cameras but the actual cameras will be released soon.

people will continue to sell/buy/sell, but what will be perpetual is that they won't shoot a goddamn thing worth a watch, and they'll complain that their cam was promised to do something that they can't figure out how to do.
To me it's better to sell and upgrade quickly when something newer hits the market. Loosing $100-$150 doesn't really bother me too much. If you wait too long the market gets flooded with everyones old gear and you will take a big hit when you want to upgrade. Even If I upgrade my camera every year for 10 years, I am only loosing $1000.-$1500 . On the other hand if you don't you will end up spending more and having your old stuff sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

I'm sure the 5D MKIII will be worth ever penny of the $2k+.

To justify cost and price, with what is being done with lower models like the 7d and Gh1, no.

Once you get to that point that you are needing equipment so expensive you are in another league and money is no longer a factor. For the guys though making amazing footage with cameras less than $1500 imo those are the people the big guys need to watch for.

Is it amazing that a 30k camera is getting heat from a $1500 one.... Truth be told this thread is about the gh1 and t2i lets keep it there and not go even further somewhere else. Canon imo will also stop making so much of those expensive DSLRs because times are changing.

Any tips on how this is done on the pany? :)
Same as on all the others. And noirist is correct, if you want to get rid of the moire, just defocus your shots. The SLR is so low res (and yes, I don't give a flying **** what anyone else says, SLR stands for "super low res") that you create the moire problem when you sharply focus. If you just defocus a little, you won't lose any actual image detail, the only thing you'll be giving up is the moire.

GH1 vs T2i

GH1 vs T2i

one of the biggest drawbacks for me with the T2i is the recording time limit. is this something that could be fixed in the future with a firmware update?

on the pana side, it would be nice to ba able to have 30p in hd mode. again, is this something that can be fixed with firmware?

are the sensor sizes comparable with each unit? (can they both achieve similar depth of field and low light performance?)

auto follow focus (i know gh1 supports this with stock lens) does canon have this feature?

do both units use avchd compression?

is there a superior mounting system between these two?

audio monitoring possible on both units?

does either support external video monitoring (via hdmi)?

As a recent owner here's my quick impressions. Build quality was something I was worried about when in actuality they are very comparable, I would say equal. I really liked the flip screen of the Gh1 but the T2i even though being fixed is nice and bright and to my eye I think even looks a lot sharper than the Gh1. The time Limit is really not a factor as any scene I shoot is never over 10 minutes, so with the Gh1 or T2i I never even came close.

Kit Lens no question hands down the Gh1, then again you are comparing a $850 lens to a $150 one. The Kit Lens of the GH1 is amazing and I will truly miss it. The Autofocus and range imo was basically perfect.

The T2i wins though in more information, as the Gh1 is a highly more compressed format. The T2i at least technically will produce better image quality. The T2i also supports live view with an external monitor which the Gh1 doesn't.

The T2i supports NTSC and PAL + shoots 1080p in 30 fps and 24fps.

So in the end I would say the GH1 is nice because of the better Kit Lens, but the T2i uses a better format and is a newer camera allowing for better footage. Both cameras are great and I personally feel they are pretty much equal. Buy whichever is cheaper and go shoot.

the better format just makes editing smoother does it not? i dont think it has anything to do with producing "better footage" since there are so many other variables depending on situation.

as far as cost, the difference seems much more substantial here in canada:

T2i:

GH1:

GH1 costs *almost* twice as much !!

Whether it can or not is a question for the Canon engineers, but a practical answer is: no. Ain't gonna happen. They have recording limits in there for several reasons, one of which is that they don't span across 4gb file sizes, second is that the cameras overheat when left running too long. Do not buy this (or any) product expecting some firmware update to change its functionality. Firmware updates that add features are extraordinarily rare.

It does have 720/30p.

They are very close; if you read my Relative Depth of Field article you'll see the adjustments you'd have to make. If you open up the GH1 1/2-stop more than the 7D/t2i you'll get identical depth of field.

auto follow focus (i know gh1 supports this with stock lens) does canon have this feature?
Auto follow focus? Or autofocus? The canons don't do video-style autofocus while shooting (does the t2i add anything on that front?) The GH1's "HD" lens can autofocus like a video camera's.

do both units use avchd compression?
Yes and no. Yes they both use h.264 8-bit long-GoP 4:2:0 compression, the only substantial difference appears to be the bitrate between them. But because of the bitrate differences and the recorded file format, only the GH1's is classified as AVCHD. Canon uses h.264 in a Quicktime movie file.

is there a superior mounting system between these two?
Mounting what? Lens mount? I'd argue the GH1's Micro 4/3 mount is the most flexible and adaptable of all mounts on any interchangeable-lens camera out there; you can easily adapt Canon lenses to work on a GH1, but a Canon can't use a GH1's lenses.

audio monitoring possible on both units?
Audio monitoring is not possible on EITHER unit.

does either support external video monitoring (via hdmi)?
The Canons offer some HDMI output, but it's not full-screen full-res. The GH1 offers no monitoring of any type while recording, and only composite monitoring in live mode (and even then, you have to do a button-press hack to enable that.)

The Canon's format is basically the same as the GH1's, operationally. But the Canon has 3x as much bandwidth allocated to it. This makes it more "robust" and less likely to cause compression artifacts.

Thank You Barry as that was basically what I figured. One thing I must say though that many people overlook. The lens that comes with the GH1 14-140mm is an amazing lens and the way it works with video. The only knock people have is because it is not fixed and requires a lot of light.

The kit lens that came with the T2i and another lens I bought 50mm 1.8 seem like toys compared to the Gh1 kit lens. The only thing holding the Gh1 back imo are simple design flaws that make absolutely no sense.

They should have opted for a better format than AVCHD and enable simple things 24p with no pulldown and live monitor record. Essentially I have come to the conclusion that there is no one camera for all of your needs. The kit lens that comes with the T2i is nice and sharp but at only 18-55mm I can't even zoom across the hall in my apartment which has me beyond furious . So now I have to buy another lens for my T2i making it 3 compared to the Gh1 which could do all of them in 1.

Money, Money, Money......... Is what everything cost here, I think I'm starting to hate shooting video already as it's if it's not one thing it's another.......
