Canon 550d vs GH1

So the canon was recently announced. The price is $400 less than the GH1.

What would you think are the reasons why you would still say the GH1 is a better buy, overall.

1. Size and weight (body and lenses)?
2. Continous autofocus?
3. Longer recording time?
4. Film look vs the more videosque look of the canon?

Hmmmm.....I think I just answered my question. But is it worth $400-500 more?

Your thoughts.

Don't forget being able to rotate the screen.

But I'll wait to see some footage and see all the testing that I'm sure will be done by Barry before I make any decision on which is a better value.

If the video on it is the same as the 7D, then it will easily be better than the GH1.

You guys might as well start selling off your GH1's now, cause it hits next month.

The GH1's standard kit lens is a good zoom lens, sharp for the price, and physically quiet (which is important if you're using the built-in or camera-mounted mic).

The GH1 has noticeably less aliasing & moire artifacts compared to the 7D, and likely compared to the T2i/550D, too.

For some folks, the GH1's "unlimited" recording duration is a plus.

As mentioned above, the GH1's swivel LCD is very useful, but the T2i's "fixed" screen is much higher res. Then again, the GH1's EVF is about the same or higher res than the T2i's LCD.

These and many other advantages of the GH1 are described in Barry's excellent article:
http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/article.php/26

As always, it depends what you want to use a camera for, and how much each feature/capability is worth to you.

Id still take the GH1, but maybe I'm bias to this discussion. Rebel products have never impressed me in the build quality side. I was not overly impressed by the sample footage on youtube.

I guess it would do alright for stills, but then if your wanting stills pay for the 7d

Let's not forget that the Canon is still a traditional DSLR so you have to deal with a mirror which means less lens options. Can't mount many PL lenses and such because of the flange focal distance required for some lenses.

Exactly why I think the GH1 still wins despite it's less robust codec - the aliasing/moire problems on the Canons don't go away - they are good cameras, don't get me wrong, but I think this problem can be a big one, moreso than "mud" which can be avoided.

How about we stop comparing every camera under the sun and just focus on how to use one. I'm really tired of seeing everyone comparing this with that, then the other with that guy, than that guy to this one. The mods need to make a section for camera comparisons and and a thread for "magical wish lists" of features people want on new cameras. AND MAKE PEOPLE STICK TO THEM. You have to sort through 1000's of posts about what people wish the camera would do before you find anything about what the camera can do.

I'm not faulting anybody for wanting to talk about this stuff because we are at a pretty crazy time in video recording and things are changing rapidly. But let's save the GH1 sub section for stuff about the camera and what it does, and how it does it. Not what it could do and how it compares to others. Everyone is just saying the same thing over and over again anyway.

Fair enough, but nonetheless I am happy that this thread came up as I hadn't heard about this new camera until now...

If, when the 550 gets released, I test it out and like what I see, I will buy it and also keep my GH1. I LOVE my GH1, and love it's cinematic look, minus Canon's aliasing and moire patterns. I DON'T like that there's no way to send its output to a monitor via HDMI. So, for that reason, the 550D attracts me...live HDMI output for focusing and image evaluation on an HD monitor. Plus, if I acquire some EF lenses, they will work on the Super-35 Scarlet if I ever make it to that level.

I hate to jump into this debate, but this sort of statement is just ridiculous and I worry about it driving people the wrong direction.

I am now starting to work with a 7D on some projects, but I would not give up my GH1 or trade it for one of the Canons in any circumstances. A buddy of mine is doing some video blogging, wanted to get into the HDSLRS and with some internet research ended up with the 7D. For someone who has no background in photography, and occasionally needs decent autofocus and would like to have access to cheap lenses, the Gh1 would have been better in pretty much every way.

I think the 7D wins in extreme under-lit situations where the GH1 starts to show banding, also high motion scenarios, and for still photography. That's it. The GH1 has in some ways a cleaner, more cinematic look, with great lens options and ergonomics. The 7D is built like a tank, the GH1 not so much. I think they make a good team, but both have their strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who has used both tends to say the same thing.

Hi Sean: No offense, but don't you think you might be overreacting a bit? There are hundreds (thousands) of threads here in the general discussion section, and surely most of them are not comparing cams & specs & wishlists, etc.

If there's a thread you're not interested in, skip it and read some other thread.

But there's often useful information for both newbies & pros in many of these "what if" threads.

Of course, rumors now go here:

Again, no offense intended, but your post seems unnecessarily harsh. However, I might be mistaken.

This is unfairly arbitrary of yours, to choose what topic to discuss in this sub forum?

You can always ignore these type of posts if does not suit you. My question is fair and valid.

Is it worth to fork the $400 dollars for the GH1 against a cheaper alternative. I was asking for every one else's opinion.

Unless there is a specific rule that will prohibit discussions of this nature, specifically in relation to my question, then I'd take it that your post is just a rant.

Please, if you don't want express your opinion on my question in this thread, make another post and discuss your "feelings" there.

I apologize, but I just have to say it.

That's all. Now back to the topic.

I will definitely wait for Barry's review. I am sure his thoughts will be most welcome.

docrjay, seanmcloud is basically correct. I see that you have 3 posts (as of this message) and am not sure how long you've been hanging around but it gets nasty on these boards. If you read through some of the threads you'll know what I mean. Your question can basically be answered if you read through some of those threads. Moderators have had to get involved in many cases and even put out certain stickies in regards to these viral attitudes on people's opinions of what cam they think is best. If I were a Mod I'd have my finger hovering over the "locked" button because I can see where this could possibly end up. It's like talking about politics or religion. So don't hate on mcloud... you got to understand where he's coming from. There are other threads for these types of arguments. Your inquiries can easily be answered without folks having to "go there" (if you know what I mean).

Point well taken.

I am not the type of person to go unrestrained on arguing topics. I am well educated and can logically see another argument that requisites no further reply.

I believe that the canon camera I was asking this sub-forum's opinion was only released yesterday. If there has been a discussion about it then you could have directed me there.

The number of post I made has no bearing in the discussion as well as how long have I been reading the threads. I was very CIVIL. Sean basically "lectured" me.

Albeit his motives might be meritorious. He could have just PM'ed me. And maybe extended his opinion on my question.

Please get back on topic.
