Canon 550d vs GH1

I can use these with my EOS or Leica lenses, but not the GH1
I don't think I understand you -- are you saying you think those lenses won't work with the GH1? Because they will; the GH1 is the most-adaptable-to-any-lens camera out there.

And hey, if you can wait, wait. The rumors persist that Sony will introduce an Alpha that doesn't have any of the aliasing/line-skipping/moire issues, and we're supposed to hear about it on maybe the 23rd. PMA is next week, it's as good a place as any to introduce new models.

Huh?

This would be nice. Sony's are known to be expensive...I hope it's reasonable.

no 25p over 50i nonsense like the panny, and are better stills cameras

Just a quick comment that unlike the 24p in 60i with the resulting pulldown removal hassle I've had zero problems with my PAL GH1 and the 1080 25p in 50i - it's simply not an issue. Just transcode to 25 fps and it's done.

From what I've seen just looking around the forums it's beginning to look fairly certain that Sony will be introducing a replacement for the A700 with video and it will be announced tomorrow. Apparently there are a couple of normally reliable sources that say they have seen and handled it but can't say more because of NDAs. I'd expect the price point to be slightly under the 7D and D300s if it is the same as its predecessor.

So....I am in something of a quandary.
I want a vDSLR for movie making, but I'm also a 'tog

I am a 'tog as well. I would not consider any of these vDSLRs for my still work.
I shoot with a Canon 1Ds Mark III. The autofocus on the 5Dmkii is not acceptable for my still work... but is not an issue when shooting video.

I have not bought a vDSLR yet but will buy the Canon T2i when it is released.

Why? ... because it will give me a nearly state-of-the-art vDSLR for $799. Peanuts

This technology is evolving at a rapid rate and I consider the "brain"s to be disposable. :-Mark-12(DBG)

Canon EOS can take almost any lens with an adapter. The new
Zeiss Primes for EOS emphasize the industry's backing of Canon.

I am also really looking forward to the GH2 but with the projected release time of September... I will have a cheap vDSLR to work with until then.

my 0.02 cents

Makes no sense to me either. The lens on the GH1 is totally killer and incinerates the lens on my 7D. I have the 14-140 on the GH1, and the 18-135 on the 7D, and the GH1's lens is vastly superior. The GH1's lens is purpose-built to be as video-friendly as a still-camera lens has ever been. It's probably 80% of what makes the GH1 such a superior video camera to the Canons. Read my comparison article; the Canons have areas where they have advantages, but if you're talking about using one of these as a replacement for a conventional video camera, the GH1 is in a totally different league, far superior to the Canons, and much of it is due to the way the lens works.

Is the 14-140 GH1 parfocal then? After having read your article, it sounds like it isn't, but I haven't been able to verify this anyplace yet.

I'm considering getting GH1 or 550D, and if the stock lens is parfocal that would be a definite plus for me.

This thread is ridiculous... I've never seen any footage where the 7D or 5D outperforms the GH1 for movies, and I've seen plenty of movies where the GH1 crushes the 7D and 5D. As far as I can tell, the signature features of 7D/5D footage are moire and out-of-focus shots. Probably because the the amateurs can't keep their shots in focus and the pros keep their shots soft to tame the moire.

I just got done shooting some doc footage outside during a nice day and the GH1 with stock lens produces absolutely beautiful images in well lit conditions (I have the 20mm f1.7 and Canon primes for not so nice conditions).

It would seem that the 5 things truly hurting the GH1 are...
-not having native 24p in 1080 or 720!!!
-no video out
-auto gain control
-some codec issues
-2x crop factor

A firmware update could seemingly resolve 2 of these issues very simply (native 24p and AGC) since they really would not require more processing power, but Panasonic will not release this, as we all know. If Panny would change this the GH1 would steal the market right away from the T2i because it is in many ways a better camera (lens options, articulating LCD, mirror-less, manual everything, over all image aside from some slight codec break up, etc...). 2x crop is the only ***** that really can not be worked around, but honestly the stock lens at 15mm (30mm equivilant) is 95% of the time wide enough.

So two questions, would it seems logical that a "Magic Lantern" hack might be created to allow 24p and no AGC and I also read that the new sony dslr will also be mirror-less, does this possibly mean that the panny lenses would work on it (doubtful but just thought someone might know).

Don't be hatin' ... technology is just advancing. I am sure that when the GH2 is released ... it will blow away anything Canon has got.

Once I switched my editor to Edius Neo 2 Booster _all_ my AVCHD problems went away. Edius plays and edits the GH1 AVCHD FHD footage perfectly as if it was natively 1080p24. So that just leaves: no video out and no auto gain control. Personally I'd much rather have the flippable LCD on the GH1 than video out on the Canons. And the horrible moire, inferior video resolution, and no movie autofocus on the Canon HDSLSR's make them a complete nonstarter for me.

Of course it will... The GH2 will blow away the GH1 just like the GH1 blows away all the Canon HDSLRS for video.

I disagree. Forget test and on paper I think the 7d and Gh1 look almost exactly the same and at time the 7d better because it is less compressed. My focus is Web Based media so I need the best compression format.

I worked along side my friend with a Dvx-100a and I think the camera shoots amazing footage, I thought that till the day we put the material online and learned how horrible it looked compressed.

After that my mission was HD and better compression methods, this is fact. If I shoot in 1080p there is no reason for me to have to convert, this is just beyond idiotic. I need to work with a system that does not tie my hands.

Reason being my last shoots were all in 720p so I wouldn't have to deal with pulldown, that not cool at all. You can attach a $150 ( or less) screen to the t2i or 7d and imo it would be better than the Gh1. Sure the swivel is cool but you can work around that.

My MAJOR problem with the Gh1 is compression and having to remove pulldown, I care about nothing else.

does "The Ballad of the GH1" constitute a review?...that was lame. besides, the video doesn't work on that link.
Phillip Bloom loves the gh1, he just prefers the Canons. and why does everyone put him on a pedestal anyway? he's enormously talented, but just as self serving. not sure he's the final word on much, but i enjoy his footage.

i'll check the next 2 on your list after i return from the crapper...

Sorry about that, I squashed two lines of thought into one.
The first is that my fabulous 21mm f/4 Leitz super-angulon is no longer very wide or even wide at all, and is just plain slow for a "Standard" lens, while I think that my EOS lenses won't couple to the GH1 even though they could fit with an adapter. I also had a thread of thought about the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 which I could use on a 7D or 550D but not on a GH1.
A bit late to get back, blame time zones!
Dave
