Canon 550d vs GH1

i've just sold my GH1 on ebay and will hopefully have my T2I delivered to me next week when it ships. For me, it's not about upgrading to a signifigantly better camera or something, I just like the direction Canon is heading with their video in all their DSLRs. Feels like a standard is forming for DSLRs and I want to get in on that early, start building a lens collection for fitting on various cameras and that sort of thing. i am the only person I know here that has a GH1 but I know a few folks that have 7Ds. These are people I will quite probably be shooting with on the same projects. So that is why I am getting the T2I, not because it is a world of difference from the GH1, but so that I can be on the same system as others, sharing lenses, etc. I just like the direction Canon is heading and thats the train I wanna jump on.

You sold your GH1 to get another GH1?

Yes, I actually sold my GH1 because I needed the money until I got paid next week (emergency). I actually sold it for more than I bought it and made about $100. I truly love the GH1 and have NO complaints what so ever.

I sold it with the intention of getting a brand new one this week or getting the t2i ( not sure yet).

I have a job I have to do next weekend so I need a camera.

Now here's my question or problem should I say. I have $1200 should I buy the GH1 or get the t2i and max it out with what I can for the same $1200? It doesn't need to be better only as good. I truly like the way Canon is going as well, but maybe I will miss the Gh1?

Truth is I am young in this profession and only choose to grow. I am not abandoning the Gh1 it's just I see the huge potential the Canon now has on the table. I can get the t2i with an external lcd ( 140+) and hope it has live record out and that would be better than the gh1s flip out screen.

In the end these are only tools and I hope I make the right decision
peace

Does the t2i record 1080p natively without having to convert ( 3.2 pulldown) like the gh1?
Does it record with a live view via external monitor?

thanks

hey, i would get the the T2I. at the end of the day, it IS a better cam for certain reasons. I'm almost positive it has Live out, the 1080p files it shoots are straight up h.264 .mov's no pulldown necessary.

i am like you, I have a gig coming soon and I just sold my GH1 on ebay... I'm really hoping that Feb 24th date is legit and my amazon pre-order ships on that date or the next :/

why did I sell my GH1 already some of you might be asking? I'm hearing lots of rumors of a GH2 or something being announced any time now, and I wanted to get my GH1 sold while there still isn't an upgrade version available. and I got a good price too. $650 for the lens $675 for the body!

yeah if you don't lose any money in going from the gh1 to the t2i, that's cool.
but the few things that could make the t2i better are so slight, that most will be hard pressed to see the difference in the footage itself.

I have a friend in the market for a new cam and i definitely told him to get the t2i over the gh1. but if you already have a gh1, it's no big deal.

people will continue to sell/buy/sell, but what will be perpetual is that they won't shoot a goddamn thing worth a watch, and they'll complain that their cam was promised to do something that they can't figure out how to do.

Seem kind of mad there buddy...... Relax and f something bothers you don't worry about us and "you" just keep on shooting.

I shoot music videos and documentaries + my own personal work. I do this for love and any money that is made to feed my family is a blessing. I sold my Gh1 because I needed the money, this week I have shoot (already paid) that equals everything out.

Wit the new t2i on the horizon, why not.... I have nothing to lose as I am a "free: person and not stuck to any company. If the idea of people buying new cameras bothers you then you need to take a look at life and realize you only live once.

With that said to "paulgandersman" thank you for the insight. I also sold my gh1 on ebay ( body $709, lens $679 ) so me and you are on the same level :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

peace

No sweat......

One thing I must say about the GH1 is that it looks like you can mount virtually ANY lens to the camera which you cant on the t2i....... That alone is a very big feature for me and only extends the life of the camera.

Still reading............

The kit lens ($150) that comes with the t2i is not even comparable to the one that comes with the Gh1 ($850), this is a HUGE thing no one has mentioned!

Why does the t2i rank higher? There are several factors where the GH1 outranks any of the Canons. It all depends on what you're looking for and what purpose you're using it for.

Excuse me while I ask someone who has many years of experience. Why is it that the Gh1 actually sells for cheap ($1200). The lens alone cost $850, does that mean the body is only worth $350?

The t2i cost $900 with a kit lens, but that lens is not even half the quality of the one that comes with the gh1 and only retails for $150.

Please help me out here Barry as this makes no sense to me

Makes no sense to me either. The lens on the GH1 is totally killer and incinerates the lens on my 7D. I have the 14-140 on the GH1, and the 18-135 on the 7D, and the GH1's lens is vastly superior. The GH1's lens is purpose-built to be as video-friendly as a still-camera lens has ever been. It's probably 80% of what makes the GH1 such a superior video camera to the Canons. Read my comparison article; the Canons have areas where they have advantages, but if you're talking about using one of these as a replacement for a conventional video camera, the GH1 is in a totally different league, far superior to the Canons, and much of it is due to the way the lens works.

If the codec in the GH1 was up to snuff, I doubt anybody here would even be talking about Canon anything. Stupid, stupid move on Panasonic's part to put a crappy implementation of AVCHD in there, with stupid 24-over-60i pulldown. They could have owned this market, but they gave it away.

With that said and even knowing the codecs limitation you have re assured me into what I was thinking that the Gh1 is more practical and better for video factoring kit lens and cost. There's no doubt that the t2i looks interesting but I know that a good lens for that camera will easily cost me $600+ placing that well over $1400.

I think Panasonic should drop the price about $100 and that would totally make everyone here happy. Regardless I will get the Gh1 and stop worrying so much about the next camera. Whenever the Gh2 comes out I will be there as I truly love the way the Gh1 feels.

Thanks Barry !

i find these threads a bit funny (and also quite informative). For whatever reasons people are selling and buying camera's so rapidly, i just believe that if you get one of these cameras and properly learn them inside out and learn to light, then 50 upgraded cameras down the road wont hold a candle against what u can produce with the intimate knowledge and skill you get from learning the one you have now. Spend some good time with the cameras and not try to aquire the next best ( sometimes marginally better) thing that will probably produce the exact same image because your cinematography skills havent improved.

If you sell the body and lens separately on the GH1 you are going to get more money... so you cant subtract one form the other when comparing it with a kit price. $1200 is a really good value for the GH1, I was considering it at the $1500 price mark.

Needing more of a video camera, the GH1 for me is much better than the starting canon lineup when you consider lenses, record limits, AF, and codecs...

I would say a verity is knowledge about cameras is better then only knowing one camera... Plus as your skills get better, you can make more $$ and upgrade equipment based on your needs - not to have the next flashy thing.

hear! hear!
such an amazingly stupid apparent oversight.
they could make so much more money if they had given it the same codec as the hmc150.
to be honest, it's a really big shortcoming that keeps me from buying one and at the same time forces me to consider the other dslr options. if they fixed at least that one thing, i'd have no reservations about buying one.

what's crazy is, somehow for me, 90% of the time, the lens is useless. Check out this:

(if the link is messing up which it sometimes does go straight here: http://vimeo.com/8854954

We shot that on the GH1 and only used the 14-140mm lens for ONE shot, and it is my least favorite shot in the whole piece, we just couldn't get wide enough on the FD lenses I have and had to pop on the 14-140. can you tell which shot it is?

I was just giving the t2i as much credit as i can conceive it'll have. i love my gh1.

This is why I am keeping the GH1.

-I already have it
-Articulating LCD (I LOVE THIS THING!!!)
-Cheaper ($600 if I decide to sell the kit lens)
-FD 24mm f2 and 50mm f1.4 ($260)
-FD adapter ($30)

GH1 with 2 great lenses and an articulating LCD for $890 vs T2i with craptastic lens for $900.

So....I am in something of a quandary.
I want a vDSLR for movie making, but I'm also a 'tog
I've been looking at the 5DII, 7D, GH1, and now the 550D.
From the charts shown the GH1 has a marginally better image, but these are for 720p, how is the 1080p equivalent? I know about the "mud" in the GH1 image nad think I can avoid it.
But on the other hand the 5 / 7D record a true p stream, no 25p over 50i nonsense like the panny, and are better stills cameras
A GH1 kit is about £1100, a 7D body £1250 and a 5DII £1800, I can use these with my EOS or Leica lenses, but not the GH1
I don't like fly-by-night.. er sorry wire lenses, give me manual ones with nice long throws, I've had enough of those with the roundy-round on my HVX.
Trying to go wide manual on the 2x crop 4/3 sensor seems a thankless task especially if you want speed and don't have much cash. Granted it's not much better on 1.6 crop but is slightly more do-able. What do you do, and no please not 4/3 lenses, the ones that are fast enough I can't afford.
Maybe wait for the supposed GH2? or see if Canon produce something more usable at an affordable price?
I can wait, I've an HVX I can use but would like the controllable DoF and low-light ability of the vDSLRs.
Aargh!
Dave
